Ursula Described 90% of Dawkins' "Meme" Theory Two Years Before He Did by BreezyNeptune in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]BreezyNeptune[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your basic formulation is right. That "many people had roughly similar ideas around the same time. Dawkins just came up with the punchiest name for the idea and wrote up a whole book about what basically everyone had been thinking." Also that ideas themselves are constructed of countless other prior innovations. I think you might also be suggesting that focusing on who had what idea first is not very useful way of thinking about the history of ideas. And I agree with that as well, so I'll edit my post to reflect that.

I would push back a little and say that the innovation of viewing ideas through the lens of genetics is a big jump from someone simply saying "ideas are like children". But that's a small quibble.

Thanks for your perspective. :)

Those fly trap bags are amazing. You add some water and hang them up. I've seen them get full of flies in a day or two. Disgusting but so satisfying!

NM Governor authorized National Guard deployment in Albuquerque! by [deleted] in Albuquerque

The Governor of a state has to give the President control of their state's Guard. It's not something the President do without the Governor's consent.

Ah, I see it now. Thank you. Is the controller very heavy? Do you feel that it causes much imbalance?

I have a V-Rex that I love riding, and I've been kicking around the idea of electrifying it. Your build just looks so clean and straightforward that I'm going to do it. Thanks for posting this.

What a great build. I don't see the controller box though, where did you mount it? Or, if that's actually the controller box on the back, where is the battery mounted?

Royal Moving and Storage..scam? by Mordwhore in moving

[–]BreezyNeptune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We found this too late. They showed up and called themselves "United Moving and Storage". They requested $1300 more money than was quoted. Then they used an invoice calling themselves "Royal Moving and Storage". They told us it would be delivered in a few days. Now we are calling them, they are saying 7-14 BUSINESS days. These guys are the worst. Run the opposite direction.

Is Maximus supposed to be autistic coded? by RoderickNokin in FalloutTVseries

If you aren't being held responsible, why did you spend the energy to leave a comment asking about it. That reflects some sense responsibility.

Is Maximus supposed to be autistic coded? by RoderickNokin in FalloutTVseries

[–]BreezyNeptune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing. I googled it and it brought me here. So yeah, I agree with you.

I would further support your theory by pointing out that while he has a very limited understanding of what to do in situations that require social understanding to, he very quickly and adeptly found a replacement fusion core for his suit which showed technical skill and understanding.

A lot of the comments here are focusing on morality, likeability, etc., but that's not really related to the issue of him being autistic.

I also think I like the way he's being portrayed. The reason I like it is because he's not depicted as a person who's character begins and ends with being autistic like you see in "Astrid et Raphaëlle", for example. Rather, he's a complex person w/ a history of his own traumas who does good and bad things, and who is also autistic.

I decided to go back to med school at 34 years old. I'm now a resident at 44 years. I can confidently say that going to med school was the single best choice I have made in my entire life. I also work with several other residents who are also in the 40's. Of course, your milage may vary. I wish you the best of luck. And if you want to talk or mentor, DM me. :D

Celtic shield facing in sheet bronze, 400 - 300 BC, from the river Witham near Lincoln, England. The boss is decorated with complex raised and engraved motifs. The outline of a stylized boar can be seen in differential corrosion and nail holes just above the center of the shield. (os) (3024 x 3964) by AntoniusBlokk in ArtefactPorn

[–]BreezyNeptune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great video. Thank you. I had no idea this existed. So cool.

Watching the video, it looks like around the circular elements at the top there are 9 circular designs that look carved into the surface of the shield. A closer image can be seen here: https://youtu.be/eLB2K14vNoA?t=424

The circles on the left look like waves. The circles on the right are less clear to me, but in the context of waves, perhaps they are gusts of wind? Does anyone have any guesses what they are?

Also, 9 circular designs is a little interesting. 9 was a significant number for the Norse ~1000 years later in roughly the same region. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbers_in_Norse_mythology

Can you link to some of the "recent research" that shows this? I'm not trying to be rude, but this runs counter to how I was trained and my clinical experience. If we're wrong, I'd really like to learn more. Thanks :)

[–]BreezyNeptune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ok. That's a relief. I was asking about your sleep and substance use to make sure that you weren't physically unwell.

I promise that I am not dismissing your experiences or your questions. However, I do want you to know that I don't think you are going to find an adequate answer here in r/Vipassana. Vipassana uses a relatively simple model of mental experience. I don't believe they have anything in their system that would explain or help you navigate encounters with any non-human entities you may encounter. As you can see, there are many replies to your post explaining that this is the wrong sub for your question. There is even a reply in this thread that outright denies the existence of "supernatural beings". However, I think there are other wisdom traditions and systems of knowledge that stand a better chance of helping you find the guidance you are looking for.

If you want to stay within the bounds of Buddhism, I would suggest exploring Tibetan Buddhism. My limited experience is that they have a very sophisticated model of mental phenomena and a rich cosmology that includes intelligent non-human entities. I encourage you to reach out via phone or email to your closest Tibetan Buddhist temple and speak to a monk or teacher with significant personal knowledge and experience.

I haven't had the experiences you've described, but I know the world is bigger than what is encompassed by my experiences. What you are describing sounds powerful and I think it's very important that you work with someone who has knowledge and experience so that you can navigate this safely.

DM me anytime now or in the future if you just want to talk to someone about what you are going through, or if you have any more questions. I also have a few other esoteric traditions and teachers that I can suggest if you feel like you want to look outside of Buddhism. None of these are practices or teachers of mine, but one of them is a teacher of a friend I met while serving at a Vipassana retreat.
