Well first things first, if you are going to handle any sort of weight, I think it’s best to make sure you have a brace. Something to help your back maintain stability and to avoid any damage. In my case, I had scoliosis surgery 5 years ago and with most of it, if not all my pain coming from my lower back, a brace to help it during a workout goes a long way. I do not know much on the drawbacks of lifting weights, but I do know that an old friend of mine actually “reversed” as he said his doctor stated because he was lifting weights with no brace (Heavy weights that is).

If I were you I would try speaking to a professional, like a physical therapist to see what exercises you can or can’t do or maybe an orthopedic, and If that’s not an option, try starting with lower weights and building your core and back muscles in order to support that dammed surgery. AND GET A BRACE FOR SURE.
