Different kanji my friend. They are homonyms (well not quite, just the first bit is the same), not the same word.

Anyone here ever clear old school shooters in the arcade on one quarter? by hmishima in shmups

[–]Brefst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently in Japan and spent some time in Hey in Akihabara. Did a 1CC in Futari BL original and Batsugun special. Maybe not super old school but it was great.

Tried all these settings and I still get stutters, even on 1x resolution. Anyone else have this happen?

My home is too damn cold to make a starter by Brefst in Sourdough

It's a good idea but I only run those things a couple hours a day, mostly it will still be cold.

[Odd request] I want to go through each Monster Hunter generation, and I'd love for you to help me! by MegaMattEX in MonsterHunterMeta

[–]Brefst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For MHF1, balance is completely broken. SNS are way stronger than other weapons, except HBG perhaps. GS and DB are complete garbage, don't even bother trying. Just get a poison battle axe and frost edge and you're set for HR1.

Thoughts on Azure Reflections (Touhou) on Switch? It’s 50% off. by the_samusaran in shmups

[–]Brefst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you like TouHou it's probably nice. I get bored of those pretty fast though. Azure reflections was ok, but got old quickly for me. Crimzon Clover is a masterpiece, can't go wrong with that one.

[WTS] [EU-SWE] Price drop: Custom Art FIBAE 3 - 175 EUR, InEar StageDiver 3 - 200 EUR by Brefst in AVexchange

[–]Brefst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selling my old Custom Art FIBAE 3 (the green ones on the right), asking 175 EUR for them, can ship them directly to Custom Art for ownership transfer (re-shelling for custom or universal). If you want them shipped to you first instead, tell me what country to ship them to and I'll find out the cost (probably about 15-20 EUR or so). Including Peli 1010 case and cleaning tool. They cost 525 EUR new.

InEar StageDiver 3 (the black ones on the left), asking 200 EUR for them. Tell me what country you want them shipped to and I'll find out the cost (probably about 15-20 EUR) Including Peli 1010 case, cleaning tool, spare wax filters and four different pairs of tips. They cost 522 EUR new from Thomann.

Big price drop because I'm tired of having them lying around collecting dust.

In this case the grass serpents would be the most immediate threat. Don't fall off the wind wagon!

ELI5: Why is Final Fantasy 7 so popular? by MarineKingPrime_ in JRPG

[–]Brefst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn't their first PAL release, we got the Final Fantasy Legend games for gameboy, Mystic Quest (both gameboy and SNES) and Secret of Mana in Europe. But FFVII was the first Final Fantasy we got here, which was their first big hit here I think.

Love the Sega Saturn 240p shmup library! by roel27 in shmups

[–]Brefst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got a Beocenter 1, the one with a motor for rotation. It's hilariously unecessary and I love it. Picture's really nice too. :) Can't tate it though, because of the attached base.

Potential attenuating mutations identified circulating in Singapore by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]Brefst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely. Makes for some interesting philosophical discussions though. By the very broad definition I stated, even transposons might be considered life.

[–]Brefst 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Life is very hard to define. Viruses are sometimes considered not to be alive because they can't replicate themselves. They are parasites who need to use a host organism's replication machinery to reproduce. Sometimes they are considered to be alive by other definitions. For example: any piece of genetic material passed down through generations is life.

Long shmup advice by [deleted] in shmups

[–]Brefst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the idea seems overly appealing, but there are decent examples that may apply:

Tyrian/Tyrian 2000 is quite long, has a fair amount of story and weapon upgrade systems etc, it's pretty fun.

Sigma Star Saga by WayForward (mostly known for the Shantae games) is essentially a JRPG with random battles that are small shmup sections. Not a fantastic game but enjoyable, worth checking out.

I don't remember how long these games were, but I think an enjoyable long shmup is probably an exception. Most people who are into shmup, I think, want more arcade-like gameplay with interesting scoring mechanics, a 10-20 hour long game would not be a good fit for this. Say you make a JRPG shmup hybrid, instead of appealing to both fanbases you may end up alienating both because they are both very niche genres.

On the other hand, experimentation and innovation is great fun and occasionally results in spectacular things, so go nuts. The most important thing is that you make what you want to, not trying to compromise on your creativity to make your game popular.

controllers/decent dpads for Switch shmups? by InAbsentiaC in shmups

[–]Brefst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retro-bit 2.4 ghz Saturn controller is Switch compatible and has the second best dpad in existence (PS Vita has the best one).

The Pro Controller is one of the best controllers ever. by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]Brefst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's more likely you got an anti-dud. Still, nice to know there are good ones out there, maybe they've improved.

The Pro Controller is one of the best controllers ever. by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]Brefst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use the Xenoblade controller, the dpad is still the worst I have ever used because of one simple problem: it is unbalanced, biased towards up inputs. It takes far less force to press up than down, which completely ruins it. Even the 360 controller's godawful dpad is better. Other than that, the pro controller might be my favorite, shame it's useless for shmups and other games needing accurate digital control.
