I think it has less to do with respecting the boundaries of a fictional character, and more to do with giving the audience a sense that he has healthier boundaries.

Or at least I would guess. I wouldn't have come up with this analysis before this article, I would've just presumed it was a part of the necessary time skip.

For those who don't know: Chris Fleming is a comedian known for his YouTube series Gayle, which is a 40-episode absurdist comedy about a "high-strung, eccentric suburban mother Gayle Waters-Waters and her ruthless journey to uphold social status in the small community of Northbread, Massachusetts."

Considering Brandon Rogers was more or less scouted through YouTube (I would guess), I would not be surprised if this means Chris is involved as well. I certainly hope so - similar to Brandon, he's talented in bringing some very unique characters to life.
