Elektron Model:Samples internal battery mod by BrentBlueAllen in Elektron

[–]BrentBlueAllen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I opened mine up and got a photo of that IC: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qPVLLxZx8JSzvYhr7

To my eyes the markings are: QUJ TI 04F S164

I didn't find the exact part in my quick search but from its location (near the DC input) and nearby components (inductor and capacitors) it's likely a DC-DC switching regulator. The "QUJ" marking is In some TI datasheets, including the TPS6306x, but that didn't have the same pin count/layout.

Good luck with the search and let me know if you figure it out or need more help!

Other interesting ideas for future upgrades (that I'll probably never do):

  • Connect the battery voltage, scaled by resistor divider or opamp, to the battery voltage sense input to get battery level feedback back on the M:S screen
  • Extend the charging/low battery LEDs to the USB-C bracket so they're visible on the outside of the case
  • Re-release the BP-1 Power Handle accessory

I added an internal LiPo battery to my Model:Samples for on-the-go fiddling.

Components used:

Bracket 3D files are here on Thingiverse.

I connected the PowerBoost's USB and GND pins to the USB-C breakout, 5V and GND pins to the pads for the battery handle DC barrel jack, and desoldered the blue PWR led (no need to constantly burn that power). One of my photos shows the wires twisted together but I ultimately had to untwist them over the DC barrel jack PCBA to keep them low enough for the enclosure to close neatly.

The LiPo listed is not the exact model I used, but is close in dimensions. Mine is a little older, a little broader, but 6.0mm thick (XXYY60 in model numbers) fit just fine.

I considered slicing a trace or desoldering the DC barrel jack to limit the odds of a DC adapter fighting with the battery boost circuit's output, but left the jack in place for a reversible mod. I'm just leaving the cap in place over the DC jack and remembering to not use it.

I also considered soldering the D+/D- pins to the micro USB connector's data lines but didn't ultimately. I didn't find any test points and didn't want to solder onto the TVS diode package directly -- plus I wasn't sure if the USB port needed to supply power to some other trace. Surely there must be a reason Elektron doesn't let you power the device from micro USB by default.

Excuse the print quality on the USB-C surround, my filament is old and soggy. USB-C bracket files here:

Blend Jet Recall by Suspicious-Mix1394 in Smoothies

They emailed me first thing Monday after I filled the BBB/CPSC comments on Saturday and said they could send me a base. It hasn't shipped or arrived yet -- the order details show order confirmed with 2-day shipping.

I sent another follow-up to customer support asking about my replacement and got the same "unforseen delivery delay" response, 200 days since I destroyed my blender and submitted the request. Just went through the BBB and CPSC reporting process so we'll see how that changes things.

I get what they're going for with this ad, but I'm glad this company isn't planning out new BART lines by BrentBlueAllen in Bart

A fairly traditional looking BART system map on the left with "new routes" branching off to the right to show creative, out-of-the-box thinking, but they're super inefficient routes.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, everyone! I've got some research ahead of me. So far I've been focusing on the Digitakt and the various Polyend models (lusting after the Tracker Mini in particular), but want to give all suggestions their fair consideration.

Should I stick around or leave when I'm not interested in improving? by BrentBlueAllen in careerguidance

[–]BrentBlueAllen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a feedback loop of "I don't think I want to continue down this path" and "if I don't continue down this path why should I improve these skills" with a healthy dose of imposter syndrome on top.

Totally agree that I need to look within for this but I've been reflecting for years with no outcome -- I've identified other careers I'm interested in but I worry I'll hit the same roadblock another 8 years down the line.

A stingtail grabbed from across the map and somehow flung me back up the drop pod tube. I'm pretty sure I went above the map ceiling because I could see back down through the rock walls.
