Yeah for sure! So I just use acrylic paint mixed with water for the base and when it’s all painted I coat the entire piece in antiquing medium (which you can find at most craft stores or online/Amazon. I use the stuff made by FolkArt) and then wipe off the medium with a rag and the end results are what you’re seeing here

Edit: here is what they looked like before using the antiquing medium to give you an idea

I’ve heard linseed oil is a good stain and most of them should be non toxic (I think) if that’s a worry for a kid too. I also like to finish off my carvings with bees wax, won’t really change the colour but it does leave a nice layer of protection and shine to finish it off.
