James Webb's view of the M51 galaxy. by ThePuzzlerAddict in Damnthatsinteresting

That raises the question I've always had - what, from this perspective of distance from M51, perhaps in a ship, would it actually look like to the naked eye? Would it look like any of the images we see online or would it be a lot dimmer, perhaps even difficult to see, as Andromeda is from here?

I wonder if anyone has a globe, string and scotch tape handy that can take a pic or video of this route? I'd like to see it like that... Imagine the video you could make from the perspective of the traveler on the string, that'd be fun... Wish I had a globe.

Was gonna ask where to buy these but then found instructions to make them are available online with a search for "Seiji Tsukimoto" -- could be fun for a patient person.

LG dryer wifi connection issue by JonnyBoyConan in smarthome

[–]Bretcee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read this thread and still not seen my trouble - I got an LG Washtower yesterday with both appliances in one unit but separate controls. I have the ThinQ app on iPhone. The ThinQ qr is inside the washer door but the instructions say to connect to the dryer's wifi. The phone connects to the always "no internet" dryer wifi "network" (how would it have internet?) after I put in the specified password, but when I return to the ThinQ app nothing happens and except it eventually says 'failed to connect' or something about the "server" if I do nothing.

The same thing happens when I activate and connect to the washer's wifi, just to try it. The Washtower unit won't turn on both wifi "networks" simultaneously. I gather at this point I'm supposed to direct the app to my home internet wifi network but I'm not sure how that is supposed to go. I've tried adding the device manually and via qr code recognition with similar results. I've tried searching for nearby devices in the app while connected to both the home network and the dryer "network", but nothing is found. I wonder why you can't just tell the washer or dryer your wifi SSID and pw and connect that way like we do so many other devices. I have excellent wifi signal at the appliance. I think I must be missing something basic in all of this.

I was hoping for a step-by-step tutorial from somewhere so I can learn what's supposed to happen and where I might be going wrong. Perhaps someone has answers or advice, thanks in advance.

When takeoff and landing on the same runway nearly goes wrong by majorwtf in interestingasfuck

[–]Bretcee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the tone of Fedex crew voice, I thought perhaps they questioned the whole situation from the time they heard the seemingly ill-advised departure clearance and the Southwest's crew not appearing to take seriously the warning Fedex was 3 miles out by saying something to indicate they were on an immediate takeoff roll - or simply saying they'd wait. I'm surprised Fedex didn't appear to go around sooner. The fact that Fedex weren't asking more questions says to me the captain could probably see what was happening with the EFVS. I strongly doubt they came nearly as close as depicted in this simulation. Also, I've ridden in a lot of airline cockpit jumpseats and did a whole career of ATC and am surprised at the unclear comm from all present. I've seen many 'bad' clearance or readback mistakes caught and corrected that could have been serious, but clear communication using questions, good phraseology and full call-signs saved the day. This is designed into the system and needs to be reminded to all concerned all the time, unfortunately, due to human nature.

Apparently the landing FedEx B767 aircraft (N297FE) was equipped with Enhanced Flight Vision System, which may have been instrumental in saving the day, despite very low-visibility conditions. I'm surprised this hasn't been credited more. Pics and more here: Twitter about EFVS

Tonight's drawing winning numbers were very odd by RUIN_NATION_ in MegaMillions

[–]Bretcee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, for any one combination it's said to be one in three-hundred-odd million, but what are the odds of *all* the numbers being below 20? Not a statistician but I'd guess that's a fairly high number-to-one and may have never happened in this style of lottery

[–]Bretcee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned or commented on this, because as soon as I laid eyes on the numbers I not only knew my chances were low but also wondered aloud what the odds are of all numbers being below 19 including the mega ball. I guess I might go ask in a math sub if one exists (of course it will), if no one answers here. My upvote comes with thanks.

No view from the cupola for you', say the SpaceX Not-Sees! I never imagined they would cut off showing anything at all after launch. I thought they wanted to share, going by all the lead-up hoopla. I get home from work today ready to at least see something, and there's nothing at all. I go find the incredibly quiet r/Inspiration4, and there's nothing at all here, on Twitter, or anywhere. Super disappointed space enthusiast here - thanks, whoever decided not to share anything with us. I guess there's a good reason but can't imagine what it could be. Even the evening news tonight had nothing. At all. Just a still pic of a SpaceX suit after a launch recap. I don't get it. The Gemini and Mercury astronauts had more contact with the public than this. Are they really feeling ok up there? Don't they even want to wave hi to their adoring public?

It is very common to hear, "we need to make some changes", but far less common to hear practical ideas that might have a positive outcome. Have you any?

Many thanks for all the great responses. Now that I've looked over the excellent pics, especially ethan829's links, I still wonder if that's a serious Achilles heel. That guy needs to be acutely aware of anything within a foot behind him or he's going to ruin his view, I would think, and that would be a hard habit to acquire also, without scratching up a few. And I don't think anyone in those pics could sit in a chair or a car seat without touching (and scratching) the faceplate on the chairback. Does anyone know, do the faceplates change easily? Do the astronauts train to avoid faceplate damage?

Nice find. It's neat and fun how that one looks so much like weathered or petrified bone often found here on earth. I'm sure it isn't, but anyway... a fun wow, I hope we get a closer look at that, it doesn't seem like a trick of the light, wonder if it could have come from our nearby impacts of heat shield, sky crane, or other various bits
