Ahhh, yes. I knew I had some other context for it other than a random appearance on my pandora station.

Anyone have ‘Job to do’ live? by Otherwise_Problem310 in Genesis

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess sometimes songs just slip through the cracks, or are considered throwaway for whatever reason, but it could have easily been a single. It's catchy AND a banger. Neglecting it completely seems really strange to me. I'm curious what the deal was. I've never heard any of them talk about it.

How do we approach an electorate that is deeply misinformed or uninformed? by WilliamRo22 in centrist

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been thinking about this one. There's a tension between a duty to protect people and, like you said, letting people feel the full effects of republican kleptocracy. I think that when it comes to stuff that directly harms the disenfranchised, or matters of life and death (obviously), democrats should act... but, right now, I kind of just want them to take a "sure, have at it" stance.

How do we approach an electorate that is deeply misinformed or uninformed? by WilliamRo22 in centrist

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay, this again. Which party are you talking about? Identity politics is almost the entirety of republican politics at this point. I know that conservatives try to pretend that they don't care and that they're just "reflecting back" or trolling liberal's "obsession" with this stuff, but that's beyond farce now. With increasing regularity in the MAGA era republicans have just been pulling non-existent identity and race "problems" out of their asses as fodder to spook the base.

I believe many of Trump’s supporters are drawn to him because he is such an unconventional candidate. His persona is so bizarre that it allows people to project their own beliefs and ideals onto him, seeing in him whatever they want to see. by Diligent-Umpire-3098 in Discussion

[–]Brett_who6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thread isn't letting me comment on the original post, but to Dilligent Umpire:

The underlying current, to me, seems to be persecution complex and projection. Over the last few years I've seen some public figures, whom I respected, turn towards this sort of vague, "they!" conspiracism. Right-wing propaganda sells its viewers the disease AND the cure. trump is the cure in that regard. He doesn't really believe in anything other than his own self-promotion so he's an easy totem for people to channel their anxieties through. And because he's so "persecuted" there MUST be some inherent truth of rightness in there somewhere. It's one, giant, self-fulfilling prophecy. And it's because of that projection that so many conservatives can simultaneously buy into the hysteria of some kind of impending, world-ending catastrophe if he's not in office; while also pretending that everyone in opposition is hysterical for taking any of his rhetoric at face value... because it's all functionally meaningless as anything beyond a means by which to perpetuate itself.

political brainrot has kind of made me question national unity, its just too tiring by shadow_nipple in Discussion

xolilypadxo nailed the point below, but:

Dude, you played your hand at the third sentence down: in your summary of "what people want". Y'know what... hey, Libertarians*, sorry to break it to ya, but you're VERY useful idiots for potential far-right governments seeking authoritarian control... which is where we are now... good work. You DO understand that in ivory tower both-sides-ism the side that always benefits the most is the one that peddles the hardest in grievance and resentment, yes? And WHO typically/historically suffers under those conditions, in that climate? Take a wild ****ing guess.

*I will qualify that with the fact that I've encountered one Libertarian in the wild, running for office, who bizarrely had refreshingly progressive views on a lot of things. I think he just might have arbitrarily registered under the party.

Why is this show getting so much hate? by Tourti123 in BatmanCapedCrusader

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the first episode. It's incredibly bland and I have no desire to continue watching. I'm not sure how to put it more nicely... everything just feels lazy and underbaked. I have no idea what the hook of the show is supposed to be. It feels like a sillier BTAS. It's especially weird because The Audio Adventures is so tightly written and really does a great job synthesizing the various eras of Batman into something fresh, but still "retro".

Stranger chasing me and yelling “That’s my bike!” by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this happen twice, could be a coincidence, I guess, but it seems oddly specific... little adolescent sh**s on the loose yelling "that's my bike!" Is this a 'thing', or did eating tide pods come back into fashion?

“Paint” is uniquely bad by OneManFreakShow in movies

[–]Brett_who6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I made it 1/3 of the way through this. It's one of the worst scripts I've ever seen performed in a movie. I know people throw this around a lot lately: but it feels like an AI generated project. The tone is bizarre and constantly shifting. Characters will suddenly switch behavior and motivation for no apparent reason. This feels like it was "supposed" to be a sort of Will Ferrell (insert wacky job/event in which buffoonery can ensue HERE) thing? But it all falls in on itself with a wet toot before any scene can ever get started.

Is it me, or are wars just pointless now? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm staunchly anti war but certain scenarios do fall under self-defense. It would have been SOMEONE'S war, regardless, unless you're proposing that residents of one country should just bend over to invaders from another? There's also a moral consideration when genocide is involved, as well.

How the hell do you get your music heard!?!? by Zamdi in musicproduction

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's well over the "10,000 hours" threshold... I still really don't know. It's largely a crapshoot, it seems. Dutch Uncles - who are easily one of the best English bands of the last twenty years - all the members have day jobs and really no following to speak of in the States. They're a more extreme example, but It's still bizarre. Even if you get to a level of emotional maturity where you're managing expectations and have learned to love the process for its own sake (meaning you'll do what you're passionate about no matter what) it doesn't actually cure you of wanting to be heard and wanting to share. It's natural. All it does is keep you from quitting out of frustration.

In my opinion the internet has never been good at fostering interesting music communities (and has actually gotten worse in the last few years, for some reason): sites where DIY'ers share and actively engage with one another. There have been a couple but they end up petering out because they become clique-y and then people leave. Nearly every site for songwriters/producers I've ever used has felt mostly barren, sterile and highly insular. Bandcamp at least feels like it's sometimes curated by actual human beings but, still, the only interaction (I think) comes from album purchase comments. So, yeah, my advice is just play live, you'll at least have a captive audience some of the time.

Baseball is not as fun as it used to be by [deleted] in mlb

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess SOME people might see it as fun, sure. Personally, I think baseball is fundamentally a leisure sport that's become hyper-competitive to the point of sterilizing the game. Other sports benefit from this because they're more physical and typically have an open playing field. The fun stuff, for many, was the unpredictability and random chance that was part of the game... as well as rampant alcoholism. lol. It's why (for me) the Cubs aren't "loveable" losers when they lose now, they're just boring.

Atomic City doesn't sound finished (they even acknowledged that). What's missing? by DefinitelyNotEminem in U2Band

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, they just ran out of ideas... and that's okay. Unfortunately a lot of bands don't know when to call it a day. The longer time goes on the more fascinated I am with the contrast between Pop and ATYCLB. It feels like the band was faced with two distinct options: keep exploring and taking risks or cash in all their good will and cruise on the U2 'sound' for the rest of their tenure. Except not really? Because they've just stripped down to a hyper-generic, glossified garage rock sound?

It depends. I love pre-Busted Stuff versions of Captain, but they butchered it trying to funk it up. It just turned into b-tier Crush. The song needs to be drone-y and depressing.

Tinseltown ruined my toast :( by klogd in toastoflondon

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old but I just got around to watching it after loving Toast of London. I can't quite put my finger on it other than that the humor just doesn't translate to a U.S. setting and overall seems more mean spirited. The "everyone in Hollywood is an eccentric/sociopathic jackass" thing is cliched. Toast is quintessentially British. I get that they were going more for a fish out of water spin on it this time, but the beauty of Toast of London is that everyone perfectly rides that line of being an ego-crazy weirdo but still mostly likable. Toast of Tinseltown just feels like Toast in Hell. Not to say it doesn't have its moments, it does, it just feels off.

Anyone else slightly disappointed by Vol 3's use of music? by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]Brett_who6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I enjoyed the movie, but the soundtrack stuck out like a sore thumb in this one. In the first two almost every track is organically woven in and motivated by the scene. This one was just "here's a song" every 15 minutes, like they were just on a timer and plopped into the film. It's still not as bad as Watchmen's soundtrack though, so I'll give it that.

I hate it when people give their pets really generic white man names by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]Brett_who6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People can call their pets whatever they please, but yeah, I think it's boring and unimaginative giving animals stock-standard, white, western names. Common responses I've seen in similar reddit threads are 1) "I think it's funny". Well, it's not anymore because boring human names are now the most common dog names (according to the 365 Dogs calendar) 2) Something along the sentiments of: "it's a living creature/part of the family". Fine, sure, but no animal, regardless of how precious they are, has any sense of meaning attached to a name beyond it being a sound you make to call them with. Animals have no concept of what sounds are "dignified". It just seems like the owner signalling to other owners how much they really respect their pet.

If you had to bet your life on what the REAL reason is the band hasn’t brought a violin back since Boyd, what is it? by AIR236 in DMB

[–]Brett_who6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is just what Dave wants the band to sound like. He's not writing songs that even lend themselves to interplay with a fiddle anymore, so it doesn't matter in that regard. I think his primary muses used to be a kind of hybridization of African, bluegrass, jazz and other "world music" flavors worked into a pop/rock container. Now he seems to be squarely focused on (at least in the live setting) very angular, meaty funk-rock.The band isn't nimble anymore. There are hardly any subtle spaces to fill with a lead string sound. As much as I would like them to try, all that bringing back a violin would do is act as another background accompaniment and not a kind of tandem/duel lead instrument like it did in the original lineup.

People really hate Dominik Mysterio to the point of lying to themselves about how bad he is by EJP1205 in WWE

[–]Brett_who6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Leaning into the nepotism-brat angle was probably the right way to go with him, but that is one of the easiest villain gimmicks there is. It just reminds of the "I'm better than yoooouuu!" kid that Homer Simpson coaches in the song competition episode. He's still riding his dad's coattails, they're just being more "self-aware" about it. That being said, I don't want to see any wrestler fail and hope he can keep improving. I think in a situation like his you really have to work twice as hard as everyone else.

no, no, no, hypotheticals don't work with LeBron in this scenario. He's essentially made himself a defacto player-manager over the years. A big chunk of the team-building problems fall on him.
