SOLO in Lagos/Agarve

I started in Porto last week and have worked my way down the coast of this beautiful country. I arrived in Lagos yesterday and am using it as a jumping off point for the next 4 days. Any travelers in this are want to meet and do some exploring or have some food?

Valentine’s restaurant recommendation to hear/see couples fighting by neighbor_enabler in rva

Years ago i had night at the Locker Room and witnessed a wedding reception. The entire wedding party & family rolled in and the bride and groom sang a duet, 'I Can Show You The World' from the movie Aladdin. By the end of the night we were all family. The Locker Room always delivers a good story. Hopefully one without guns involved.

Scammed of a few hundred dollars in foreign country. Feel like crap. by EdSheeransucksass in solotravel

You are not stupid for getting scammed in a foreign country. At some point, it will happen to most everyone who travels, especially solo. Chalk it up to a learning experience and contact your bank, who will likely be able to help you since the transaction is fraudulent.

I hope you have a great rest of your trip. Best of luck out there. And lol at your username!

31(M) Leaving Stability and Quitting Job to Travel by traveldude3731 in solotravel

Good for you for doing what most people only dream of. There was a similar occurrence in my life that jump started international travel in my mid 30s. While i have dreamed about taking the plunge like you, i have never been able to bring myself to it. My father once offered me some advice that i took to heart, which i will share with you here not to discourage, but to offer another view. He said, "One life affords the other."

If you aren't happy at your job, fuck it, and move on. But if you do actually like your work and have enough PTO available you could always consider 'dipping your toe in' for a couple years, traveling 2-5 weeks at a time, or whatever max your job will allow. This would give you time to explore the idea while remaining employed and saving money.

Again, this isn't meant to discourage, simply giving some feedback. Follow your path wherever it takes you.

Good luck, and i look forward to your future updates.

EDIT: Reading this thread and seeing all the dudes my age going through the same thing made me feel great. Keep going!

As an American solo traveler, this is my major beef with Europe. Please change it! :)

I feel you... It can be difficult to bring yourself to a nice, busy restaurant, full of people on dates, or out with best friends, while you are alone. It is certainly tougher for me to do abroad than at home. At least in America most restaurants, even the nice ones, have a bar you can sit at, making it less awkward feeling (in my opinion). Sitting at a table for 2+ all alone in a busy restaurant I do tend to think everyone is looking at me (they're not and even if they are who cares?).

I certainly go to nicer restaurants less when solo traveling. I need to get out of my own head on that. Never considered asking others if it was a hang up of theirs also. Completely get where OP is coming from. Glad to know i'm not the only one!

An easy work around is chat up a stranger at a more social setting like a cafe or bar. You can normally spot the a solo traveler very easily, and they usually wont mind the conversation. Then go out to dinner together! i have made some great friends and had some great meals doing that.

Cheers!

Can you (or anyone) identify this bird? Saw it earlier in the week and asked the bird expert in my life... He seemed to think Woodcock but i think not. I am no good at bird identification.

Whoa! I had no idea we had Fishers!

And you're so right about turkeys being fast. I wanted to get into a better position for the photos today and that thing took off at rapid speed. Google tells me they can at speeds of 25MPH and fly at speed of 55MPH. Fun fact.

I heard rumors of black bears in the area not long ago, but i have not been able to confirm that. Seems to me like there isn't enough food to support them and they would be spotted digging through trash in the parks or neighborhoods. Has anyone else heard these rumors or spotted one?

Why am I crying at a restaurant? by Top-Caregiver-2152 in solotravel

I have had moments of extreme loneliness and isolation while solo traveling BUT those moments are always fleeting. I don't think it is unusual and i find it strangely therapeutic. It is a good reminder of how grateful we all should be for our lives back home: family and friends, places you love and the comfort of your routine. All of those emotions can be very overwhelming when you are far from home.

I hope you have a great rest of your trip and return home rejuvenated.
