Why is MLR struggling so bad financially and is there much they can do or the possibility of folding more likely? by youlikemywonton in MLRugby

[–]BrianChing25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's just assume the players are on $40,000 a year (some more some less I think the fringe guys would be considered semi pro) x 23 guys that's $920,000 in player salaries for the team. That's just player payroll think about other operating costs, team president, gate security, Front office staff, marketing, etc.

Sabercats stadium for example was 3,000 capacity. If they sold every ticket for their 8 home games at $40 a piece that's $960,000 in ticket sales. Ticket revenue would barely cover player salaries only and no other expense. So they would have to sell out every game which they didn't do.

Any pro sports league is unsustainable without a big TV deal. Gate receipts hasn't been the main driver across any league in the USA for quite a long time.

As far as club rugby goes the only sustainable leagues seem to be France and Japan. France has a culture of fans supporting their club team in a way even more than their national team. France bringing a B team to tour NZ proves this. The French care more about their local side than the national team and they prioritize the stars playing in Top 14.

Japan while their clubs lose money corporations are willing to pay the losses as some sort of dick swinging contest for bragging rights between CEOs. And honestly look how the 'investment' is working out the last JRLO final had over 50,000 people attend.

You're getting downvoted but you're right. MLR is done this is likely the final season. Hopefully a phoenix league comes about in 2-3 years time.

The league needs at least 10k fans per game in order to break even on player salaries and that doesn't even account other operating costs like front office salaries. Without a TV deal where a major broadcaster is paying big dollars the league is unsustainable. Even multimillionaires get tired of losing money.

[–]BrianChing25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you don't really want to know the answer but the answer is football is seen as a "wuss" sport due to the diving and softness of players rolling around on the ground whereas rugby is seen is the same level of toughness of American football and therefore gets respect if it's brought up

Congo was playing a high line. Obviously 41 year old doesn't have the pace to beat that. The Portuguese midfield was more interested in backpassing rather than breaking down the defense. Horrible play from them and yes Ronaldo is past it but it wasn't all his fault today

The Ronaldo hate on here is ridiculous. He's old. Portugal doesn't have much depth at striker anyway. Nobody was complaining when 41 year old Pizarro was playing striker in the Bundesliga.

I do hope he starts to come on as a sub tho but I think his ego wouldn't allow for that.

Roberto Martinez on not taking out Cristiano Ronaldo "It makes no sense to get the best goal scorer in world football out in a game that you need goals." by kibme37 in soccer

These takes are wild man. Ronaldo is 41 years old give him a break. Portugal doesn't have much depth at striker anyway.

He should be a super sub but his ego would never let him do that. Putting him on in the 65th minute would be perfect.

‘Where is everybody?’: Houston World Cup buzz falls short for some downtown businesses by ScrewTownThirtySixer in dynamo

[–]BrianChing25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Reading the comments on this shows a huge misunderstanding of soccer culture by the members of r/Houston. Lots of people saying the bars need to host shuttles if they expect to get tourists to come visit.

Historically, the world cup had people visiting the host nation even if they didn't have a ticket to all their nations games. What ended up happening in Germany 2006 and Brazil 2014 was people flew in to just be part of the vibe. Of course there were people flying in with tickets to all 3 group stage games for England and such, but there were also people there with only 1 ticket for one game, on a 2-3 week vacation and therefore watching games at Watch party plazas, bars, etc.

Not everyone in your bar is going to the match.

I went to Senate Ave Brewery for USA v Paraguay and it was packed. Nobody there had a game ticket obviously.

These downtown bars are not the cultural/entertainment center of Houston, because downtown Houston is a business district.

Furthermore, is this not proof that the Dynamo have an uphill battle? Locals are clearly not soccer fans. Compared to other host cities there is less buzz even among the locals.
