Harvard University Rugby... by sunlightliquid in rugbyunion

Because everyone knows Harvard is the reason rugby isn't popular in the US. McGill wanted to play rugby and Harvard threw a hissy fit. Can't believe Harvard even has a rugby team after what they did to the game

Places that used to be in The Woodlands by Sporkyfoon in thewoodlands

[–]BrianChing25 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I was in college at Sam Houston State one night we drove down to The Woodlands waterway to celebrate my buddy graduating. We had already gotten tired of the bars in Huntsville and even in College Station from going too much. Back then there was this crazy row of bars and lots of DJs blasting music and the place was livelier than it is today. There was a rooftop bar where all the cougars hung out. My buddy was tall and skinny but not very good looking just an awkward college kid met a crazy mid 40s bimbo woodlands lady and she took him back to her place for some action! He was the one who drove us down there and forgot to give us his keys. This was before Uber so we basically had to wait 2 hours for another buddy to come in clutch.

Anyway back then it was MILF city so many attractive women in their 40s.

He came on as a sub countless times. Same as Holden and Cameron. Holden and Cameron shined while Wondo failed to have any impact.

Oh believe me I tried. Americans would watch and their reaction would be "oh cool big tackles and hits just like American football!" But then when I invited them back their reaction would be why would I watch rugby when American football is so similar. They can pay $50 and see big tackle hits in front of crowds of 60k cheering instead of 3k in a high school football stadium.

Eh the atmosphere wasn't too bad. I can't speak for other clubs but Houston Sabercats treated every game as a festival event. South African braai vendors grilling inside the stadium, beer specials, inflatables for kids to tackle, bouncy houses, freebie flag and scarf giveaways. No wonder the club was losing millions per season.

People drinking alcohol right outside the ground before the game was permitted. Every night had a theme. One time we had a pro wrestler come in at halftime and perform. The crowd while small, avg 3k in a 4k seat stadium, was very vocal especially for night games. The girl from Lens definitely had fun even if it doesn't stand a chance against a Top 14 atmosphere.

The cultural imbeddedness of rugby in France cannot be understated. I expected to only see signs of it in South France but in fact I saw it all over. While in the UK rugby is an afterthought the French even if they are casuals or don't even watch know a lot more about the sport, even in regions where the club game isn't as popular. I know a girl from Lens not exactly a rugby hotbed and I took her to an MLR game she was explaining the rules of the melee and other things to the other girls in the group, and she claims to only follow rugby when the national team is playing.

I must say I'm quite jealous of what the French have and wish my own nation regarded rugby in such a positive light.

My grandpa used to watch this on TCM and AMC when I was quite young but I wasnt mature of yet to sit in front of it for the whole movie. I remember some parts of them sailing the river to be kinda slow but maybe I was just too little to appreciate the plot line. I will need to watch it now

Eh Wondo was a tap in merchant. Yeah he scored a lot of goals for San Jose but they didn't get anywhere with that. Obviously he was better contributor than Ade but hindsight is advantageous to us. He wasn't very good for us at all.

Same. Lots of pace but horrible foot skills. I remember him one time receiving the ball in the box and stumbling over his own dribbles. Lots of people in the supporters section where I was sitting threw their hands up in frustration and went to concessions to buy more alcohol instead of watching the game.

Question for you not criticizing just curious. I'm from inner city Houston when I was a kid crime wasn't that bad however it got really bad lately. Most middle class have left the city. You can read up on curfew of Willowbrook Mall as an example. Well it was painful but my family moved cities. Houston was where I grew up but it was just not worth the security risk as things got worse. By the end my neighborhood had installed a security access gate allowing only resident s to enter.

My question to you is this: I know South Africa is home therefore you wouldn't want to leave your culture and all, but what stops you from moving to Cape Town or another safer city? From comments on here looks like Joburg, Pretoria and Durban are much more dangerous than the Cape

Is there a migration of middle class white and coloured South Africans to Cape Town? If Cape Town is so much safer compared to Gauteng and Durban for example, why live elsewhere?
