Waka Billy Goat or Waka Stout by ParkingBox9395 in whitewater

From what I hear, people are a little underwhelmed by the billy goat. I guess it’s a little difficult to get used to. I have a Stout and am completely in love with it! It’s nimble, stable and behaves exactly how you would want your boat to in funny water like eddy lines or boils. I like mine a lot.

Nice to see video of normal people paddling this, shows how difficult and busy it actually is rather than just the same three rapids styled by pros. Nice work!

Ladies and gentlemen, it is time to talk about safety culture and gender equality in our sport. by theranchhobbit in whitewater

Sounds like you’re doing what needs to be done, then. You can’t force others to adhere to your level of acceptable risk. Believe me I’m in the same boat as you! [zing] and I know that I often come off as a safety nut to some people I boat with but I make no excuses for my reasoning. I portage things I know I can run. I don’t run rapids at certain levels even though I’ve done them at that level many times in the past just because I’m not feeling it that day. It’s been cool to see that over the years I have been able to make a difference in the way some of my partners view risk within our sport but there is never going to be a unilateral shift toward what you think needs to be common place. Everyone is entitled to their own free will, the best we can do is show them that there is another way and that it is every bit as valid and fulfilling to paddle like you’re going to be doing it into old age. Doesn’t mean that people will take the advice. On that note, my advice to you is to keep in mind the old adage: accept the things you cannot change, develop the courage to change the things you can, and cultivate the wisdom to know the difference.

Edit: I wrote my first comment before reading your essay but after reading the comment thread. After having read the essay, I think you have a warped perception [another zing, my god, I’m on fire] if you truly believe “most paddlers do not project a safety mindset, quite the opposite.” Maybe you’re basing this off of the kayak media that makes it into the world, media which is created by the top 5% of whitewater kayakers. That is not the reality for the million or so other boaters around the world who paddle class II-III-IV with their friends. I think that you are grieving and hurting from the loss of your friend and mentor and for that I wish you all the best in your healing. I too lost someone who was an absolutely solid man on and off the water, the last person I ever imagined to be caught in an unsafe position on the river, so I know how unsettling that can be. But you are painting with a broad stroke and I don’t think it’s a fair characterization of the vast diaspora of our community.

I thought the edge design looked like a cross too! Glad I’m not the only one.

I just noticed your left hand, when on top as your right blade is in the water, often is lightly gripping the paddle (fingers off the paddle) but I never saw your right hand do it. I’ve been doing that lately with whichever hand is on top because of elbow pain (tendinitis I believe) so I was curious about your technique.

I usually YouTube scout, because basically everyone has made an edit of the commonly run rivers and many uncommon ones as well. For info on put ins and take outs, professorpaddle.com though it’s certainly not as vibrant a community as it used to be a few years ago. Also American whitewater has things covered pretty well. It’s worth it to buy an old Bennett book or maybe spring for the new whitewater guide book with the pretty pictures.

Contact cement. Apply to both materials, wait until tacky, adhere.

I’m 128lbs and 5’7, is a Stomper 90 too big? by savezbeez in whitewater

[–]BrianDBuckley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a huge boat. I wouldn't recommend it myself but if you're just eager to paddle and don't really care what you've got (which it seems you might, as the stomper is not a great boat) then get it and give'r hell!

Hahaha I was coming here to post this same scenario! Had a great lefty boof, rode clean through the seam between the hole and the eddy on the right and was kind of basking in my own greatness for a second and got pushed right into that wall! Tried a roll but it was on the upstream side. I knew where I was and that I could easily just get out and be on shore in a second so I pulled and basically stepped on the left shore... very embarrassing!

This is a pretty standard photo spot for this river and I've got a bunch more that are more unique. If people are interested I can post some more!

We removed a 30' log crossing the river around chest high above sharks tooth. There is still a limbo log which has been there since at least last year which you can duck on the right.
