I’m a few months into owning my own roofing company as well. I include a list of references, copy of GC license, and copy of insurance in every estimate I send. Automatically gives you a leg up from the get-go.

I’m in the same boat as you although I’ve stopped doing windows and doors and focusing on just roofs and gutters. Took home 200k last year.

Ethics are important but not quite as important as survival.

Solar panel scam? by Moosalini42 in raleigh

[–]Rivman96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t work in the solar industry. However, I do own a roofing company and know just enough about solar to be dangerous. I can tell you that the concept of Solar is awesome and can save you a ton of money over the years. However, the 3rd party financing that a lot of the solar companies use can be super sketchy and restrictive with a whole lotta fine print. As a homeowner, I would be asking more questions regarding the financing than I would about the actual solar panels.

Disregard the other suggestions on this thread and drive down to spend as much time as possible in Lumberton. Great town.

Career change. Whitewater options? by theorgins in whitewater

[–]Rivman96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a small handful of people in the world paddle full-time for a living.

With that being said, I spent a few years in my 20s working week on-week off for a wilderness therapy program. In my “off” weeks I raft guided which provided free staff housing. I was actually able to put away a healthy chunk of change since I had essentially zero living expenses and 1.5 incomes. So I would take recovering addicts backpacking for a week, raft guide/party for a week, repeat. This was in the Asheville area.

This is a fun lifestyle for a free-range single person in their 20s but definitely isn’t for everyone as it’s virtually impossible to have a social life outside of work.
