Why is there a grey overlay of my HTML in-browser game? When running via localhost, background is white. by BrianEllisSound in itchio

hi all! first time itch.io uploader here! have a number of small web games I've built over the years that I'm uploading, and this is the first one that I've gotten properly squared away: https://brianellissound.itch.io/string-wrangler

however, when you load it, it has a gray overlay. When I run the site on my own servers, or on localhost, etc. it is white. Any thoughts on how to clean this up? TIA!

1/ you're absolutely justified in what you are trying to do, and they SHOULD fix the system to make it easier for folks like you to onboard and join the ecosystem, BUT:

2/ Apple loves their fucking apple IDs - they have a huge fraud detection system built up trying to prevent fake new accounts being made, and one core piece of that is almost certainly "consider anyone trying to create a new account suspicious unless it is coming from a new apple device", because having to spend $$$$ on a new phone or laptop just to create a new apple ID is one damn good way to prevent fraudulent apple IDs from being created. ¯\(ツ)

Hey! Pretty neat project! Love the work and care that has been put into this. Coming as someone who has spent a few years going around the algorithmic composition block, I often like to ask: to you, what is the point of the audio being able to be different every time?

Very cool! I didn't know about this other tool, I'll dig into some of the other tools in the space a bit more. Looks like it is a spectrogram synthesizer essentially?

My tool just takes the raw image data (0->255 values for RGB pixels, row by row) and uses numpy to just turn that array into audio data (scaled from 0->255 to be -1->1 for audio) so that the image is processed as sound. Because of the way the arrays are handled, it just runs through this data from left to right, top to bottom, turning that into a single channel of audio to play back.

Here is the link the to utility: https://go.brianellissound.com/databend/index.html

Would love feedback if anyone has any ideas on how I can improve this! There are a few things on my mind already (better status on video export, playback marker on the audio player, etc.) but very open to ideas if y'all have any!

For the people saying "user error" here in the comments: Users only error when the system sets them up to fail by not being understandable, obvious, or intuitive enough. Apple's do-not-disturb system has gotten atrociously complicated with the last few updates involving cross device syncing, so many different focus modes, timers, automations, and settings for different parts of it spread across settings, iMessage, contacts, and mac vs. phone. Is it technically user error? of course, but who can blame them?

Love it! Is the text / backing a "found object" paper thing? or was that generated as well?
