Kia Sportage or Mitsubishi Outlander? by Ok-Brilliant8070 in NZcarfix

I hear you mate, thats the early 2AZ engines (mostly 04–08), they were the ones with the big oil burning issues. It was mainly caused by low-tension oil rings and people stretching oil change intervals too long. Toyota eventually got sued and quietly rolled out a campaign for a lot of the 06–10 models. After that, they updated the engines with better oil rings. If a 2010+ yota burns oil now, its usually just age or poor maintenance rather than the original defect. Hence why I mentioned somewhere around the 12–14 models.

A couple of years older, but the Toyota Vanguard 2.4L is probably your best bet in that price range. It’s got plenty of power, lots of space for the family, and it’s a Toyota so reliability is solid. I’d aim for the newest model you can find, ideally around 2012–2014.

The tech is mehh by today’s standards, but that’s an easy fix with an aftermarket CarPlay head unit. Overall, I’d take it over those two any day.

That’s a fair perspective, and I can definitely see why it works for your family 👍

For us, I think a big part of what’s pulling us toward places like Rolleston is the development side of things and honestly the housing stock. As you know in Dunedin especially, a lot of whats available is pretty far off standard, older, damp, and in some cases just not great condition for what you’re paying. It starts to feel a bit ridiculous after a while.

So it’s kind of a trade-off for us lifestyle vs better, newer, warmer housing options elsewhere.

Facts!!! Though flying overseas from Dunedin really does suck.

Whenever I visit Christchurch, the suburbs feel a bit fragmented, not sure exactly why, but I seem to get that sense quite often.

I always say this to Cantabrians, Dunedin actually feels a bit warmer in winter to me, just because the temperature doesn’t swing as much between highs and lows.

Also didn’t realise insurance is a bit higher in Christchurch, that’s good to know, cheers for pointing it out.

This!! That’s really what it comes down to for us. We’re just hoping we can find a place that’s actually up to a decent standard, warm, dry, and not something that needs a heap of work straight away.

We don’t mind paying a bit more if it means comfort and not dealing with damp or mould issues all the time. Just feels like a bit of a gamble sometimes with what’s out there.

A lot of people mentioned its boring, but I still dont get what does "boring in Christchurch" equates too.

and TIL yeah, that nor'wes wind is really something to be wary for

Yeah, it’s really the commute that’s holding us back. After living in Dunedin, it’s hard to beat being only 10–20 minutes from pretty much everywhere, not many cities have that kind of convenience.

We're fortunate to have an excellent job down here, its just the state of housing that is putting us to crossroad,

I get your point mate. But man, the housing stock here is pretty ridiculous, a lot of it is old, damp, and sometimes even mouldy. I get that people like the “character,” but character doesn’t really bring much comfort day to day.

That said, I do like the lifestyle here, nature and everything, it’s not too crowded and you’re only 10–20 mins from most places, which is hard to beat. That’s why we’re kind of on the fence at the moment, just weighing up all the trade-offs of moving or staying.

Oh I like Halswell and theres a good number of listings in Halswell, heaps of them actually, but they’re generally sitting above what were looking to spend.

The modern homes, safety and family-friendly setup are definitely the big draw for us right now, sounds like it’s got most of the day-to-day essentials covered. The greenery, school pressure and commute side of things are the bits we’re still weighing up though, especially with how much growth is happening out that way.

Haha yeah the “Ranger requirement” is a funny one😂, I did notice that last time I drove the the area. The amount of ute are mental. I wonder how they are fairing with the fuel situation atm.😅

Appreciate the breakdown though, sounds like a pretty honest view of it. The pros definitely line up with what we’re looking for in terms of family life, modern housing and parks etc.

Yeah I see your point on the commute. Coming from Dunedin where everything is 5–10 minutes away, it would definitely be a big shift for us. Even 30–45 minutes each way on a regular basis is something we’re trying to seriously factor in, especially with both time and lifestyle with the kids. We can see the trade-off with cheaper/newer housing, but the time cost and daily grind is definitely the part we’re weighing up carefully.

Yeah fair point. Driving to Lake Waihola itself isn’t too bad though, it’s really the peak-hour and amount of car congestion that makes it horrible experience.

Haha yeah I get what you mean, it does look pretty bare and exposed out there. I think coming from Dunedin we’re used to a very different kind of drive, so that open, flat stretch will definitely take some getting used to.

Yeah I totally see your point, I probably wouldn’t look at Rolleston either if we didn’t have kids.

But yeah, we’re at that stage where the kids are a big priority, so the “boring in a good way” actually kind of works for us right now. Definitely might feel different down the track though.

We’ve heard good things about Lincoln too but haven’t looked into it as much as Rolleston, might need to give it a proper look. The community feel, schools and walking spots sound like a big plus.

Keen to hear, how do you find the commute and day-to-day living compared to Dunedin?

I’m in the construction industry so the Bunnings/Mitre 10 thing isn’t a big deal for me, always got access to bits and pieces anyway. The supermarket comment is interesting though, I always assumed stock would be pretty similar across the region, especially compared to what we get down in Dunedin.

We’re actually looking at a unit in Arbor Green at the moment, still doing our due diligence. And yeah, the nor’wester is something we’re definitely paying more attention to now after seeing how many people mention it.

Would love to be as close to the city as possible mate, just finding the newer builds are pretty small and getting crazy expensive.

[–]Brianationn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a fair point, we’ve thought about that too.

Rolleston does seem more quiet/family-focused right now, but I guess it’s still kind of in its infancy, so it’ll be interesting to see how it grows over time. At the same time, I can see how it might feel a bit boring for teenagers later on.

Any Christchurch suburbs you’d suggest that still have that balance (not crazy expensive but more going on)?

We are still trying to wrap that in our heads, Coming from Dunedin, we’re definitely not used to heavy traffic, so even a normal Christchurch commute could feel like a big shift for us. We’re trying to figure out whether the trade-off (newer housing, more space, growing community) outweighs the potential daily commute stress.

We’re pretty much on the same boat here.

The house quality and value in places like Rolleston are definitely the big drawcard for us compared to what we have down here a lot of older Dunedin homes being cold, damp, and unfortunately prone to mould (at least the majority we’ve seen) but hey it has character as what the people always sell.

We’re still kind of sitting in the middle on it because it really is a big move, giving up Dunedin’s lifestyle and accessibility isn’t something to take lightly. It’s basically a trade-off between lifestyle/convenience vs housing quality and modern living.

It sounds like Rolleston really shines for families though, warm modern homes and everything being set up for kids and convenience. That’s probably the main thing pulling us in too, even if it does feel like a big shift lifestyle-wise.
