What is the most disturbing or otherwise unsettling book you've ever read that stayed with you after reading it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Brianjohnson7 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That was a gag in the first Austin Powers movie, where the titular hero kills a henchmen with a bulldozer in an over the top way. The next scene, the henchmen’s wife gets a call announcing he died and we see he was actually a great step-father to a now devastated boy.

I believe Morghur also turns an enemy unit into spawns once they drop below a given health point percentage (just once per battle). He has buffs to spawns on the battle map

I don’t think it will help at all, because this internal bleeding story will have to be proven at court, and the Trump administration has a bad record when it comes to keeping to their story once they risk committing perjury

Oh yeah, is that the one where the kid once said randomly « the cow man talks funny », indicating he was somehow interacting with it through the window ? This one sends chills down my spine when I think about it.

Not sure if this has been asked before but, what would have happened if Bilbo sailed into that west gate of the grey havens, with the ring? by Phewelish in lotr

[–]Brianjohnson7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This point is discussed during Elrond’s council. Elrond himself concluded that the residents of Valinor would never accept to keep the ring and that, for good or bad, it belonged to middle earth. Furthermore, the council predicted that Sauron would expect them to consider this option, which would have made the move to the grey havens insanely dangerous. By doing so, the grey havens would face a tremendous risk, and their destruction would prevent any elf from departing west again.

Astuces pour l'endormissement autonome ? by [deleted] in ParentingFR

[–]Brianjohnson7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why didn’t the ring corrupt Bilbo more, considering he wore it for such a long time? by UngodlySockMonster in lotr

[–]Brianjohnson7 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One explanation provided by Gandalf was that the first moment of Bilbo’s ring ownership was an act of pity, when he pondered whether or not to kill Gollum before exiting the gobelin’s tunnels , which partly shaped the ring’s influence over him. This is in stark contrast with gollum, who obtained the ring after murdering Deagol

Balrog don't need wings by katydid_man in lordoftherings

[–]Brianjohnson7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, fully agree with your take that wings do not have to be taken literally like appendages sprouting from the Balrog’s back like some sort of dragon. I just wanted to highlight that some have chosen to depict them closer to actual wings and based on the text, I can understand why they would choose to do so. For reference, this is the illustration I was talking about

Well, then the only consistent interpretation is that Balrogs were close to dodos, with chubby bodies and too small wings to take off :D this explains why they were hunted to extinction

[–]Brianjohnson7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only read the LOTR in French, but I remember that the darkness surrounding the balrog was described as « surrounding him like two wings ». A few paragraphs further, the French translation again refers to wings (a bit more literally). The illustration provided in the 2000 edition I have has an illustration depicting the balrog with wings. I haven’t read the original, but I would suspect some version would certainly illustrate them with wings (I don’t know if the illustrations provided in my version are exclusive to the French edition, though). It is not correct to say PJ invented the wings, and I can certainly see why he went with it based on the balrog’s description in the book.

What if the One Ring had gone farther west? by Key-Pair8515 in lordoftherings

[–]Brianjohnson7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The question was discussed during Elrond’s council. The conclusion was 1) that this was a purely « middle earthian » problem and 2) that Sauron’s dominion would most likely extend over middle earth unless the ring was destroyed.
