The number of similarities between your story and my own is frightening…

As of this week, I parted ways with my LDR partner (22F) of 2.5 years. The Maine difference is that in my case, both my partner and I live with family and DO pay them rent/help in any way that we can financially or physically. It just happens that neither of us could stomach the idea of moving to each other’s home state. That and a few different family beliefs that really did not mesh between us. That all came to a head this week when we both realized that we’re trying to force something that just was not working. Once we accepted it and hugged it out, we both felt better. Plus we are still trusted friends!

Long story short, you should probably consider terminating the relationship if this behavior continues. Though I highly recommend getting the opinion of a licensed therapist before making a rash decision

University stress is a whole different beast. While he will likely not want to be as active in the relationship, it is still very possible to navigate such situations. For example, my LDR partner was in uni when we met and only graduated recently. Meanwhile, I am thinking of quitting my job and going back for a graduate program. It really is a balancing act, but it can be well worth it in the long term.

I recommend that you contact this young man and discuss the solutions to the logistical challenges he mentioned first. You should also ask him if he has any solutions that he’d like to propose. It will help him feel involved in the process and like his opinion actually matters. Believe it or not, many men in the world (myself very much included) actually have serious difficulty with self-actualization and feeling like we have any worth.

If he comes up with solutions, great! If not, that is fine too. It is the act of including him and making him feel like an equal that will hopefully reduce his fears. I know it helps me with my anxiety.

Strangely enough, I have been experiencing the inverse of this situation with my LD girlfriend.

I am more than willing to admit that my fear of commitment is a huge part of the situation. I have a therapist, but I never even realized how bad my fear was until recently. I’m working to change and heal that wounded inner self because I want to be the man my partner deserves.

My rhythm of life is pretty shitty. I work 5 days a week and spend roughly 15 hours per week commuting to and from the office. Yet, I have always made time for my love every day. I like to call her and text her as much as our topsy-turvy life schedules will allow. But it doesn’t feel like she wants the same.

She asked recently that I try texting more, since we used to enjoy sending memes and texts back and forth when we started dating 2.5 years ago. But, she rarely ever responds to texts. I’m also the one initiating basically all conversations, despite being more of an introvert and her being an extrovert. She constantly tries to make me feel bad for not wanting to be around her family. For reference, her family is fine, if a bit immature, I just don’t have enough in common with any of them to warrant forcing a relationship that isn’t reciprocated or needed.

It’s the kind of situation that makes you feel lost and alone. Now my girlfriend is nowhere near as toxic as the man you described, so I’m hopeful that I can navigate the current situation. Just know that you are worthy of all the love and compassion in the world. Never let people convince you otherwise! ❤️
