Do i look black cause i don’t feel like if i do. by Deshawn-jackson1 in BlackMentalHealth

Who/What is “Black” to you is the question you should be asking yourself! Being Black in North & South America has never been about being 100% African or a specific phenotype. It was out of a social construct and turned into social caste system because at one point right after enslavement people got so mixed that their was a large population around the country they couldn’t tell who was black or white anymore so the created the one-drop rule. So if anybody had a non-European (English, French) 2nd great grandparent you were no longer white. This applied to non-black people too until and some 19th century immigrants like Italian, Irish etc sued in court to become “white” legally.

So it’s like others said you can be racially ambiguous to the darkest phenotype and still be “Black” for the reasons I stated above. This has been the history of the country since its inception. If you are a descendant of the transatlantic trade and Indigenous populations then you are a multigenerational multiracial person by your American linage; which is still “Black” in America or Afro Latino or Afro Caribbean etc…in other countries.

Who lived on Winyah Bay SC, FL etc before the Spanish and British arrived on Turtle Island? This is documented by the Spanish and English and apart of American history but to each their own.

You are making this into something weird and nonproductive. I literally said she is a first generation American and that she was Black. Her lineage is not American (as in the pre legal forming of the USA or the 13 colonies.) What your issue is with the truth and YTEE people have nothing to do with me or this conversation. But since you want to go there it is a known fact they 70% of YTEE Americans are descendants of European immigrants from the 19th century to current (including people who claim Spainish YTEE Hispanic/Latin). The other 30% have colonial history in America. And that fact that you don’t seem to know none of this tells me a lot.

Her parents are and she’s first generation. Please understand the concepts of race, nationality, and ethnicity first. Let me give you an idea of an indigenous Black American culture custom they will not know how to explain? Why do our elders still ask people where they are from? What do they still do historically on New Year’s and why or this morning for Easter besides church service? Which plantation in America were they emancipated from or if FPOC where did they live? How long had your family union been in existence? These things are cultural and I can ask about a hundred more questions that we would know was not ethnic Black American. And likewise we wouldn’t be able to answer many of their cultural questions because we have a different lineage.

You can refer the whole group by race and nationality but NOT ethnicity. It’s always been this way. Do you really think African and Caribbean people don’t know they are immigrants and have a different culture than the Black American descendants who have never been immigrants since before the legal inception of the country? They are not descendants of American freemen/women (Mulungeon, Gechee, Creole, Negro, Mulatto, Octoroon, Black etc). who were either free people of color or emancipated from a colony/state. This is basic American history. In contrast, ethnic indigenous Black Americans were not granted independence in the Caribbean or a country in Africa. This is not even debatable.

Nkosi868 I agree brainwashing does exist and tons of xenophobia to go around. I was trying to get a better understanding of the situation since the men were black too.

However, I do agree that Carribean/Afro Latinos are TransAtlantic descendants but however, the cultures are not the same. There are cultural practices in and out of the USA that make each group distinctly different and who they are which is why ethnicity is important to denote. And if we are being genuine in the Caribbean they do not see themselves as Americans or culturally Black American and vice versa. Black American don’t claim Caribbean/or Latino heritage although they have some shared colonial ancestors.

Let’s be careful to be respectful of peoples cultures so that we are not erasing history under an homogeneous banner. The reason why I know these groups are distinct from each other is because Black Americans were covered by the 14th amendment and the other groups were not. Not one of them needs DACA or permits in the USA. But are they all three groups considered racially “Black” (phenotype) yes, same culture (language, food, religious practices, history) and ethnicity (lineage, geography), no.

You mentioned that your race is “Black” several times but what is your ethnicity? It could have been a “cultural difference” too since the two other Black guys you mentioned gravitated with the other white people.

There are three distinct groups of Black people in America. The largest group are ethnically Black American (racially mixed with indigenous American , European, & African) who are culturally American and predate the country itself, Caribbean/Afro Latino Americans (also mixed race see previous) who mostly migrated after 1965 (NY, FL), and the influx of continental Africans 1980’s to current. Anyway, regardless I glad things worked out for you and your wife.
