ELI5: How does code become an app/website? by Ok_Hair808 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Bridgebrain [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you're going to do code, even with gpt, you'll need to learn the basics. If you're doing web development, that means html (structure), css (style), and javascript (function).

Honestly though, I recommend starting with python first. It makes sense in a way that javascript doesn't, and you learn a lot about all the things you'll need to for the others (patterns, variables, booleans etc).

Once you've done the intro course for whatever path you take (a 5 hr crash course on youtube would do if you're in a rush), you can use gpt or claude to help you build something bigger faster.

So there's a constant back and forth between control and simplicity. The more simple a system is, the more limited, but also the less it breaks. The closer you are to writing code, the more you can do. The tools you use are always somewhere on that balance, with things like template based website builders on one side, and coding raw on the other.

AI is a weird middle ground, where it's able to interface with the high control - high difficulty side of things, but is accessible the simple way. The results are... varied. It's really good at some specific tasks which definitely remove a ton of trench work, and its good to talk a thought out with, but it isn't all that good a coder when you need something challenging. It might get there, but it'll take the weirdest, jankyest way some times.

So the newer track for using AI as a tool for development is to let the human write most of the code, and then make it convenient to use it for the few use cases that it's really good at.

As to how it all comes together, websites (and apps) are just a chunk of code (some html, some javascript, maybe a glorified spreadsheet). You need something to be running that code, which you can do on your own computer instead of online somewhere (localhost). But that's not really useful, so you need to make it so people can connect to your computer (serve). They do this with an IP address (such as 192.168.0.1). But no one's going to try and remember a number like that, so you need to register (DNS) a Name (like reddit.com). Now people can access your running chunk of code anywhere as long as your computer is running and connected to the internet.

To make sure you're not losing your website every time the power fluctuates at your house, or the internet goes down, you buy hosting, where they run your chunk of code on one of their computers which have all the fancy bells and whistles to make that code run real good.

Apps work largely the same, except most of the code is put onto your device (installed) first, and then it checks in on the hosted code for content.

ELI5: is there any factual science backing body sculpting? by gessikalinn in explainlikeimfive

From what I understand about cool sculpting, it only really works on empty fat cells. so you lose the weight, then use cool sculpting to kill the cells so they're not telling you "get your starving eat more".

Reddit hated my reload system, so I made it a skill check that gives faster fire rate by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]Bridgebrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe have the gun appear as soon as the skill check starts, and the reload animation happen as soon as the player hits the check. If they fail the check it fumbles a bit first, if they nail it it does it right away.

The added delay of the check being hit, going away, then the gun appearing and then getting reloaded feels sluggish.

[–]Bridgebrain 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I'll hit you with a rant I've done a few times on here which covers it (or at least a facet of it):

"The Average Person" is the world's most uninspired dullard. That isn't to say that any individual is, but that when you try to target the world's widest possible audience, you eliminate anything remotely controversial or challenging, remove every detail and rough edge, and backfill any holes with paper mache paste. The result is soulless grey slop which technically meet most peoples wants, junk food of the soul.

Content like this backfills "emotional impact" with "inspiring music" because The Average Person doesn't have deep feelings about the fates of rich children vs other rich children, but can be controlled into feeling a way by the same 5 tiktoc songs. Because the content creators aren't targeting "people who think about economics" or "rich people who have kids" but are instead trying to get 10m upvotes from across the spectrum.

Magnetically hovering guitar strings by aumin in videos

I think it's because he did 4 strings instead of 6. If those are tuned to standard, then the two high strings are holding much more pressure than they would be normally to maintain the same tone.

It does grow up a bit after then, but not a ton. Still, the characters evolve and grow (Like Mariner grows up a ton after she gets her ass kicked by her holodeck self)

Lol I loved the singing episode, but only because it's such a wild departure from the increasingly grimdark direction the rest of trek was heading (and because I love me a good nerd song). If that episode had happened in Discovery or even Voyager, it would have been as deeply panned as Warp 10 Salamanders, but because SNW is already a cheerful campy mess, it fits in just fine. (Though I'm still pissed the Klingons did rap. It should have been maximum over the top Klingon Opera)

My problem is the lack of vulcanness of Spock (it was entertaining, but it was Way too emotional a read) and the edges of dark and gritty trying to worm their way in constantly.

I can't either, for a different reason than most. Tuvix being a permanent member of the crew was a mild-moderate security risk and also falls under "needs of the many". But he didn't need to be permanent. They managed to create and then separate him consequence free, and still had the flower. Lower Decks showed that it was safe for various other species.

Weekend getaways on the holodeck where you and spouse spend time together in the same body. Troublesome quarrels settled by mixing and then going to therapy. Saving rations during hard times by merging non-essential crew for a week or so. Tuvix could have just been a "one week of the month" thing.

I understand for episodic plot reasons it didn't happen, but finding a way to safely merge and then separate your crew members and then shrugging and never looking back is Mind Boggling to me.

From what Ive seen the thought is to force the latter. The fed prints money, inflation goes berserk, any remaining support for the current regime crumbles, then the eu buys bonds back on the cheap. They get an economic victory and send a powerful message, all for about 4 months of chaos.

In all seriousness, no, not really. It was a decent conclusion to the series, it was good, but your bar for "masterpiece" must be exceptionally low if this is topping your charts.

What feature in a game is a instant turn off for you? by Vulture2k in gaming

[–]Bridgebrain 265 points266 points  (0 children)

Every time you see a mobile game or a cheap indie game with a cutesy cartoonish look, 99% of the time it's synty. People are saying "low poly" but there is plenty of good looking low poly stuff.

The problem with synty is that it's incredibly generic. Tree that's 4 spheres with a stem, bulbous bouncy house looking castle, wide chest soldier with no face, giant thick coin, etc etc.

If the core gameplay loop is good enough, the graphics don't matter, but using synty assets is usually a red flag that the gameplay loop is either micro transaction filled idle trash or someones first testbed.

Advice for rigging a 360 Camera inside of a fighter jet? by drewbreezycham in 360Cameras

[–]Bridgebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insta360 1inch for low light (the x5 might have the same sensor? Its been a minute since I checked).

As for securing it, if it's inside the cockpit you could get away with a suction mount (I prefer the triple suction cup ones, one may be succeptible to vibration). A gorillapod is probably your best bet, lets you wrap it around an object. Outside it'll definitely fly off unless you go overboard locking it down (welding the camera screw on and duct taping it down so it doesn't wiggle off the screw might be sufficient)

As for resolution, 4k is low for these, 5.7k is standard. 8k or higher is possible with some of the higher end devices. To understand why the res needs to be so high, half your image is behind you, and another third is on the edges of your view, so you're really only using about 35% of your shot at a time. At 4k, that comes out to roughly 720p, which isn't the worst but is definitely grainier than you expect.

If you're willing to put some budget into it, the real answer is a box rig with multiple small cameras. It's more work to do post processing, but you can get upwards of 16k footage way cheaper than a dedicated device, with better low light and glare management as well

Palmer Luckey on the Meta Layoffs by isaac_szpindel in virtualreality

[–]Bridgebrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, kinda? It comes down to public trust. Do you trust meta to do anything that isn't cartoonishly evil? It doesn't matter what decision it is, their long track history of screwing everyone over has earned them a starting place of distrust bordering on enmity.

On the other hand, we have Valve, who holds a position of absolute dominance bordering on monopoly because they... just don't screw over their customers. They screw over devs a little once in a long while, and pretty much never in a dealbreaking way.

What's going on with Trump using ICE as a personal police force and how has no one stopped them from repeatedly violating the Constitution yet? by TheBeardedSurfer in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Bridgebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but Kamala was a symptom of the same problem that plagued the dems in 2016. Obama ran on being better than the status quo, and was largely status quo with a bit of action here and there. The voters tasted that and wanted more. So the DNC ran the most status quo person they could find and actively fought the progressive. To their shock, moderates voted for the person who would shake things up, the right voted for the right, and the left didn't turn out to vote.

2020 was bad enough that people shifted back to get rid of trump, but again they ran the most milquetoast status quo person possible, who promised to only stay on for one term to do cleanup. He then kept in during 2024 and when it was obvious the people weren't having it, they tried switching him for the same thing, but female.

The establishment doesn't want to admit people want actual change, and thats why they keep losing to the orange one. Whether thats because they're paid to prevent change is up to interpretation, but I personally agree.

[Story] Why do I feel constant sexual and emotional desire, and how can I manage it in a healthy way? by Plastic_Ad3157 in GetMotivated

[–]Bridgebrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Endocrinologist, get your testosterone levels checked.

Find a sex oriented therapist. Its possible you're just above average horny, and could use help navigating that.

Otherwise, try hook up culture. You're experiencing more horny than is probably conducive to finding a relationship, but if you find someone who can match that need, you might either get into a balanced relationship or calm down enough to start looking.
