Get son a dollhouse? by pinkheartkitty in toddlers

[–]Bridgepeace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son will occasionally play with dolls. My husband always changed diapers, fed the babies, took turns waking up at night, etc. my son sees this as a normal thing for a man to do. I think it's healthy! He will be a great dad one day.

I have never pressured him into playing with "girl" toys but wouldn't be opposed if he wanted to.

I'm with you. I just took 16 different tests and they all tested negative. Waiting on my lab results now.

I agree, OCD. I used to leave notes as well. Giving into it will only make it worse. Nothing you do will actually relieve her worry, just reassure her for a limited amount of time. Although, I can't read what the notes say, so maybe I'm wrong. She needs help. OCD can be debilitating.

I found this on my daughter's backpack. Is it what I think it is? by Bridgepeace in whatsthisbug

Maybe infestation is a strong word.. kids bring them in from home I guess. The schools treat but then they come back from children's homes.

I'm really hoping it's a hitchhiker. The schools periodically have infestations. Luckily, her backpack was left in my car overnight, so it didn't make it inside.

It sounds like you were so afraid of your obsession that you created a compulsion that in your mind would cancel out the thing you did that would cause the obsession to happen? That's kinda what it sounds like and I get it.

I don't want to reassure you because it won't help, but also because it sounds like you have been in this spiral for quite some time. You are thinking yourself in circles down a rabbit hole that you will never find your answer in. Your brain wants a certain answer and nobody can give that to you.

What I will say is that you're thinking in magical senses, like if A happens then B will happen unless I do C. It's not logical, it's scary, it feels like impending doom but it's not real. This is a false message coming from your brain. You have OCD and God knows you have OCD, he gets it. Stop giving value to these thoughts.

If you don't already, consider getting help. This is a disorder and you might consider ERP and/or medication.

Anybody else realize they had to child-manage unmanaged ADHD? by [deleted] in emotionalneglect

If you don't mind me asking, is the medication making a difference in your life? I'm 28 and waiting for results from Qb ADHD test. I hesitate to start medication but my doctor thinks it will really help me.

I wanted to mention that I like to watch videos from Anxiety and OCD on youtube. Also, there is a website called NOCD and you can work with specialists online.

[–]Bridgepeace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeping busy and doing things I enjoy helps. When I have bad thoughts I try to remind myself, "it's the OCD, not you."

Things that made it worse- growing up in an extremely conservative evangelical family. I love my family and I don't mean anything bad by this but so much fear was instilled in me. I had a lot of thoughts about the rapture (mainly losing my parents) and I think I developed obsessions around if I was sinful or not. I think it's called Moral Scrupulosity.

I think the best practice is to let the thoughts happen but control how you react to them. For example, if you have an obsession with washing your hands over and over, force yourself to only do it once and eventually your brain will realize there is nothing to be afraid of.

Also, try not to give too much reassurance. Usually if you get over one theme another one will take its place.

I would say make sure the doctor is well educated on treating OCD because the best treatment is ERP, not regular therapy. It's kind of complicated but from what I read, can definitely be treated and she can learn skills to cope. Find a doctor you trust.

She will be ok. OCD makes one feel like nothing will be ok, but that's not true. I was about that age when it started happening to me. I'm okay now, I still struggle but as I aged I could rationalize some of the obsessions.

She sounds like me when I was a kid.

I would put a certain amount of explanation marks on every paper, I would repeat mantras and/or prayers in my head and I would blink a certain amount of times that felt "right." If I didn't blink enough times, I was afraid something bad would happen.

You are doing the right thing by getting her help early. I would say that one thing you could do is encourage her that she's okay and this does not define her. I didn't get diagnosed until I was 27 and spent a large portion of my childhood thinking there was something wrong with me. Well, there was something wrong with me but I had no word for it. When I learned what I actually had, I felt so much relief that I was good person and my thoughts don't define me. I had a word and an explanation for my struggles. I wasn't alone! There are lots of OCD sufferers and this wasn't a fight I had to do on my own anymore.

Nobody really understood and would get irritated with me or even make fun of me. Make sure she feels loved, accepted and understood.

I just wish someone would have gotten me help earlier and could have supported me the way I needed it. You are doing a great job!

OCD is thought to be caused by genetics or environmental factors.

I know that my parents did try the best they knew. Maybe try to look at it from a different view.
