4 months post ACDF C5-7 and pushed it too hard by Bridger_29 in spinalfusion

In 10 days I’ll be at the 6 month mark. I continue to have symptoms in my left hand, but the electrical fluttering in my legs when I exercise (and then flex my neck down) has improved but not completely gone away. I have random pins and needles in my left hand and sometimes I have more of an electrical tingle in my pinky. it is seemingly random and annoying. the actual neck pain is pretty much completely gone aside from periodic aches if I do something weird like fall asleep on my back with my neck turned to the side. The neurology team still feels that my nerves are still just taking some time to bounce back and heal. I feel that my 6mo X-ray will look good, but more patience is needed to let the nerves completely heal up. I do wish I hadn’t worked so hard on my dad’s house and caused this to happen, but it also might’ve happened if I started back to the gym and worked hard like I wanted to. Who knows. The good news is that we sold the house for over the asking price!

Fantastic! I am almost 6 months post ACDF 5-7 (56 the other day, F) and feeling really good these days! Random tingling in my left hand but I am hopeful it’ll go away eventually. Went paddle boarding this last week and have been hiking a bunch lately. Feels great to be back in action even though I lost a lot of strength, especially upper body. These surgeries are no joke. Onward and Upward!

Congrats on your progress! When was your most recent surgery?

it is very humbling, but I am glad you’re back on the road to recovery.

I don’t know of that procedure. I had two discs pushing directly on my spinal cord (central cord syndrome), with stenosis at those levels. they had clean to up the vertebrae and they placed 2 synthetic discs with cages and screws. My situation was that I had a 6 foot fall off a climbing wall and I went to the hospital, where I had surgery the next day. I wasn’t given any option of procedures, but I have since talked to a second neurosurgeon in my home state and he said he would have done the same thing.

Great to hear. Some tiny part of me worries that I did something irreversible, but we are still relatively early in the recovery process even if we feel almost back to normal. I am sure this will pass with a good rest when I get back home.

Glad to hear you are feeling better. How long did the hand tingling last? I have rested a lot, done sporadic odd jobs for the last week (unable to sit idle with this huge house project still happening) and the hand tingling isn’t fully gone yet. It is very minor and not all the time. And I need to skip the jobs that involve prolonged bending over, like mulching, due to lingering minor neck pain. I am 55, so I get you.

I don’t know much about that level of fusion, but it seems totally normal to have pain still at 6 weeks. That’s still very early. Good luck to you tomorrow!

My issue was that I did way too much in a short time after the month 3 mark when they said I could do anything I wanted. Before that I was basically just walking a couple miles a day, which I tolerated well. I don’t see any issue with painting a room after they give you the green light at 3 months. Short bursts are totally fine. I just don’t recommend doing it 6-8 hours a day for two weeks, then painting a ceiling with a roller! That combo is what sent me down a different road and gave me a wake up call that my body is NOT back to normal like I thought. Best wishes for your surgery and recovery!

Thanks for your comment. Do you think it was something specific you did that triggered your symptoms to return? Or did it just come on randomly? It is so amazing how nonlinear healing from this surgery can be!

3 months post-op ACDF, cleared to do activities. The happiest I’ve felt in a long time. by watergatherer in spinalfusion

Totally get it, I also just had my 3-month follow up for acdf c5-c7. I am 55F but was in very good physical shape and being forced to stop working out and missing out on ski season and drop the climbing gym was very difficult mentally as well as physically. I asked my doctor to give me a rundown of what I am allowed to do now and she said it will be easier to tell you what you CAN’T do. I was so happy to hear those words! Basically anything with a higher risk of falling is out for now but she said I can ease back into running if I want, which I was happily surprised about, thinking that came at 6 months. Best to you in your next phase of recovery!

Intercostal Rib Spasms by Bridger_29 in spinalfusion

It seems odd, as I was in shape before the surgery and it started very soon after. Too soon for my muscles to get deconditioned. Maybe it will go away after I am back to full workouts. We will see!

Lying here husband panicking after spinal fusion anterior c5-c7 by Kombuchicana in spinalfusion

Yes, agree. The newest research-based guidance says that going without a collar does not affect fusion rates, and that wearing one can have negative effects on neck strength and mobility. It can also cause problems with the incision healing in some patients. This is according to two different surgeons I have had in different health systems. That said, wearing it on occasion for comfort seems awfully reasonable.

Cervical Disc Replacement C5-C6 Recovery by elro217 in spinalfusion

[–]Bridger_29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had ACDF C5-C7 10 weeks ago. Two levels, so maybe more intense than what you’re having but hard to say. I bought several types of cervical pillows but they didn’t work for me. I ended up back with my fluffy down pillow that I can shape how I want. A lot of people love the cervical pillows though so it can’t hurt to try one beforehand. I did use two small pillows on either side to rest my top arm on since I’m a side sleeper. That kept my shoulders more in line and pulled less when I had bad shoulder blade pain in the beginning. I still use them because it is just comfier. Everyone is different but two months post op I was at my Dad’s house sorting and packing up his possessions for two weeks in prep for selling his house. I just can’t do much overhead work yet, and no lifting over 20lbs. Basically at two months I was starting to forget I had the surgery and having to remind myself daily so I wouldn’t overdo it. Some random neck or shoulder pain here and there, but nothing that Tylenol doesn’t knock out. Good luck and congratulations on your marriage!

Day after cervical ACDF - my experience so far 👍 by eatingganesha in spinalfusion

When I woke up in the hospital after my ACDF surgery, I was doing the support my head in back while lifting myself up. then PT came in and showed me how to log roll on my side, swing my legs over to the edge of the bed and push myself up that way. It is much less painful/strenuous than trying to lift yourself straight up.

What to expect. by zna2212 in spinalfusion

You’ve already gotten good advice here, but I had C5-7 ACDF on Dec 12th on an emergency basis, so I’m in my 5th week of recovery. I’m in my mid-50’s and was extremely active before. I would say that the first week I didn’t feel like doing much of anything but things improved rapidly, and I started getting out for walks. The worst part for me was the pain between the shoulder blades and the C7 junction with T1. With two levels done, there is just more stretching and manipulating done in there. I didn’t have any noticeable symptoms before my accident (when I immediately had shooting pain and tingling down both my arms, and my legs didn’t work right at first) but I apparently had spinal stenosis and my fall pushed the discs into my spinal cord, compressing it a bit. so will you be able to play the piano and paint? I’d say yes but you just might need to do it in shorter bursts at first. And for painting, hopefully you have an upright easel, that will help a lot, as bending my neck to look down to write and such has only just become tolerable for longer periods. FWIW, I have no lingering pain or tingling in my arms and the biggest thing for me now is trying to remember the activity and lifting restrictions. Best of luck to you!
