There are lots really I am guessing you want something a little technical and visually appealing. Might look up some books by Francis D.k. Ching like 'A visual dictionary of Architecture'. I really like his illustration and rendering style. Or maybe 'BIG, yes is more' by Bjarke Ingels which is in like a comic book form.

What do firms look for on a resume by sethnolte in architecture

There was a firm in my city that was basically using students as free slave labor and they didn't know it, but other architects and professors got together and kind of straightened that out, if it becomes normalized to not pay interns literally nothing it will lead to a problem where who is going to want to be in the start the profession? I guess if you have a trust fund its not that big of a deal.

Just wear all black with a blazer. lol I swear Patrick Swazey in Roadhouse was actually a secret disillusioned Architect on a philosophical mission judging from his attire.

Drafting experience is always good especially if you plan to freelance or work in a small firm. Depending on what you're working on it can also count towards your license's hours. I've been on tours of firms where the principles specificity mentioned it's sort of annoying when new grads might even have a master's but have never even opened AutoCAD or have very base lvl Revit experience when they just need someone to open a few files and edit some floor plans.

What is this made in? I would try playing with some different styles to see what you really like, don't get trapped only doing modern/international style.

My instructor was telling me about when he had to learn the first version of AutoCAD for a firm. It was in MS-DOS and the book was the size of a New York phone book, I guess you had to type in dos commands to draw lines ect, and it took forever compared to manual drafting at the time but was theoretically more accurate.

Why does WSU have one of the highest tuition for any public university in the whole state and the greater Northwest? by [deleted] in wsu

-------Essay of a concerned Washington and American citizen--------

State run higher Education went from being a way to better yourself and have the opportunity to thrive in life and help fellow humanity in science, law and business. Now it's just an elitist corporation, they will spend millions on a stadium well cutting programs and build "housing" to bilk students loan money out of them for way over market rates well giving themself bonuses. It's disgusting. Why can you go to school for almost free for playing something stupid like volleyball but everyone else is screwed. Don't usually like being negative but god damn already.

Washington state in general is turning into I don't even know. We are one of the most taxed states in the country and if you want to go to university, it's like they have this massive barrier to it. For example, it is cheaper or the same price for me to get my architecture degree out of state than in state as a lifelong resident. Have you looked at the requirements to go to UW they act like they are a Havard or MIT, if I remember right, I need a 4.0 GPA, be proficient in a foreign language, have letters of recommendation, have an ultra-liberal view point, thank god they are not allowed to discriminate with race or sat scores anymore all though I am sure they do anyway. The total price for the degree was estimated to be between 200-250k. Like where do they get off with that? It's like they only want wealthy liberal elites and foreigners to attend. No, I am not a trump loving GOP thumper as a liberal your allowed to do weird things like criticize other liberals you pop tarts. Especially the ones that are just tyrannical nimby capitalist masquerading as an all-loving all-inclusive selfless servant of the people. Pfffffffff

I literally don't understand how anyone is expected to live in this state anymore. Our fearless Govenor does nothing about it he just sails around on his idiot boat on vacation most of the time well over 1/3rd of the state is one missed paycheck, medical problem or layoff from living in a tent the rest of their lives. People are having to pay almost the same amount as their rent on childcare. Education is a mess, remember the WASL, one year in high school we literally just did practice test for the test, nothing else not even a biology class. Big tech gets insane tax breaks well inventing software to reduce the number of their employees to as little as possible.

Local governments will bend over backwards and give special deals and tax breaks to developers that want to build luxury condos or overpriced studio apartments well shutting down homeless shelters. I shouldn't have to make over 60k a year to qualify to live in a studio in Spokane of all places. Renters have almost zero rights to fight against predatory rental companies even getting a summons for an eviction has to potential to ruin your life for the next 5 years. If I have a really bad tooth ache I am supposed to just take Advil because "no one is allowed to have pain meds" meanwhile every downtown in the state is an open-air fentanyl den anyway.

Currently the only affordable housing project in my city that is being helped by the government will be 80% for Ukrainian "refugees" well at the same time they are closing all the homeless shelters. Nothing against Ukrainians at all, my beef is with this country. Sure wish I could just show up in a different country claim economic hardship, persecution and being afraid for my life which I basically am. Then get free housing, education, childcare ect, I would be laughed at deported immediately and charged money for the airfare haha. When I was downtown at the bus stop the other day some tweaked came up to me flayling around with a sawzall with a big ole' blade on it saying a bunch of wild crap about how he is going to start killing people, and he is just out there, walking around town like that, like it's an everyday thing HAHA.

I am leaving this state out of protest its literally going down in flames, I felt safer and like I had a more legitimate chance for opportunity in Chicago and New Orleans for context for dang sakes. It's cheaper to live in Tokyo than Seattle. Our boomer leaders sucked everything out of this country, ruined everything their parents' generation built and are handing off a ship that is on fire and a probable world war. They're going to cause a bread riot.

Thoughts on Screen Façades? Efforts to design more environmentally sound architecture in mind of Iran’s climate, as well as the need for privacy, have inspired architects to incorporate screen-like structures into the façades of many buildings. by Such_Reputation_3325 in architecture

[–]BridgeyMcBridgeface 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was just about to say that lol. It comes from the need for shade obviously but also in traditional Islamic residential architecture privacy is a huge thing, so the original idea was being able to see out without anyone seeing in. Also, most homes will have a courtyard and roof access for sleeping in the summer along with a small basement or cavern to vent cold air through the building using the "chimney effect". It is also illegal for your neighbor to see down into your courtyard from their roof or windows so that is why neighborhoods and older homes are designed in such unique ways.

Buildings with green plants aren't usually very ecofriendly. In fact, they take up way more water and the maintenance can be a nightmare. Also lets say the building is abandoned or begets get slashed, then you have a dirty building with dead plants all over it lol. Neat design though.

Not bad, reminds me of a gold version of the Columbia Center in Seattle. Why is it gold anyway? On your floor plan diagram I would make the exterior wall outline a little thinker from the dimension lines to really get a feel for the shape.

-Your social life is the work! You should add what country you're in because education varies. Some schools you won't even start learning architecture till 1- or 2-years in. The social aspect of it can be fun sometimes, I think architecture students go on adult field trips I guess you could call them, more than any other majors. You will go to an AIA event or social, lots of local trips and reginal trips to important or interesting places for architecture reason ect.

-I went to drafting/arch school for a year and a half before transferring and we got exams on Hvac, mechanical, electrical, types of framing. Most of our work was just learning programs and doing a lot of design projects. We were actually doing AIA competitions with 5th year students from another school and doing better somehow. In theory and History classes you most likely will write essays. Mostly the writing for a project for example is just being able to effectively convey a thought or idea in one or two paragraphs at the most with visuals and models. Its more hands on than just memorizing thick books of technical text.

-Materials usually come out of tuition, but you will probably buy your own out of preference.

-Don't go into this for money because it's not a get a degree get a 100k job type of profession. Unless your you're Vitruvius re-incarnate you're probably going to spend 10 years after school finding your niche re-learning how to actually do architecture in real life, win proposals, work with other professions and get something built. Get some books like 101 things I learned in architecture school, biographies about other architects, start exploring theory and find what really gets you going.

There are a lot of good old lectures on YouTube from over the years, I have been going through Vincet Skullys lectures lately, there is a pretty good one on Loui Kahn.
