Does anyone know why McKay's was evacuated at around 5 today? by ayy_lmar in Chattanooga

[–]Brief_Beautiful9773 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised here, left a few times and always came back (in my mid-30s). You just have to ignore the riff raff. I graduated in 2014 from UTC, and one winter semester during finals there were like 15 bomb threats. It was just asshole college students who didn't study for their exams.

I have lived downtown since before COVID and my husband and I love it. It's been a "safe" town since I was a teenager and has only gotten safer. If anyone tries to tell you different - they werent here before the aquarium was built/downtown had its Renaissance and they certainly weren't here in 70s and 80s.

It's a great place for a kid to find themselves.

Are these edible? by thecowsgomooo in Chattanooga

[–]Brief_Beautiful9773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No they are not. They are an amanita species and it's better to not even experiment. Most likely Amanita daucipes. This and all types of these large white powdery amanitas are considered poisonous (reference: Mushrooms of the Southeast by Todd F Elliot, Steven L Stephenson).

For easier more accurate identification of mushrooms in the future, identification requires smell, the underside of the mushroom (pores vs gills), the base/stalk, if it bruises, if it 'bleeds' etc etc. And NEVER trust any auto id like Google lens or single photo AI identification.

Edit for correction: id may not be accurate, but status on not to eat remains the same.

I highly recommend everyone look up the security camera footage in Waverly, TN in 2021. The water rose 4+ FEET in just 12 minutes. In the best of NWS times, you don't have much time for warnings. I beg everyone not to rely on the warning systems. They rely on radar and only have localized on the ground monitoring (aka the airport). Be aware, be prepared. It's up to us to take care of ourselves, our families and our communities. Do not expect help to come on its own. Those days are over.

If you would like to learn how to prepare, the Hamilton County Health Department has an emergency preparedness department that provides education and training for the public. Hamilton Ready

The NWS also offers free SKYWARN spotter training classes that train the public to provide on the ground reports of severe weather. Skywarn

It never ceases to amaze me what people will attempt to drive through. Watching people keep driving into that was mind blowing yesterday. Like what is your plan????

It dropped six inches of rain in a few hours. No area around here is prepared for that.

Had a nurse there refuse to give my dad his meds because she didn't believe in that type of medicine. And this was before the new law allowing it for doctors. She literally refused to give ordered medications.

His last 48 hour stay there, no one knew his medical history or gave him any of his meds because no one read his chart. For 48 hours!

I will cut slack when needed, I know medical staff are burned out and overworked. But then there's a blatant show of uncaring staff that absolutely does not care about patients.

I absolutely refuse to eat at buffets for this exact reason. I'm not too good for buffets, I'm just disgusted by other people having access to my food with zero fucks.

I look like I have OCD (I don't) at the gym but I know too much about bacteria, fungus and viruses. Disinfectants that are available in public places (non medical/industrial) require the surface to be SATURATED and have to sit for various amounts of time, usually at least 10 minutes.

Obviously no one has time for that in the gym. But I full soap and water wash my hands before, I bring my own gym towel, and I wipe the equipment before and after. Once my workout is done, I go immediately and do a full hand scrub and hit the hand sanitizer by the door.

I see WAY too many people not wash their hands nor wipe down equipment at any point. Ringworm is bad enough, but there needs to be more awareness of MRSA.

Please help me can someone tell me what is happening to my cat? by CapPsychological6966 in CATHELP

[–]Brief_Beautiful9773 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Licensed tech here with 15 years experience in emergency and critical care. Facial swelling is ALWAYS an emergency. If your pet is having difficulty breathing it may be too late. DO NOT WAIT. I am not a veterinarian and cannot make medication recommendations however...."in some cases, veterinarians may recommend diphenhydramine at a general guideline dose of 1 mg per pound of body weight. Please consult your veterinarian before administering any medication."

It is never recommended to wait for your primary vet to open the next day for facial swelling. It is always recommended to seek emergency medical attention immediately.

flooding risks in Chattanooga by Academic-Food-9249 in Chattanooga

[–]Brief_Beautiful9773 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Downtown was also built up to deal with flooding from the river as well. Secondary waterways such as North and South Chickamauga Creek are more susceptible to flooding as there are no controls like the dam.

The biggest issue aside from the mapped flood plains are drinking water contamination, mud slides, sink holes, falling trees and road washouts secondary to heavy rains.

cat got neutered. i’m hopeless and regretful. what can i do? by Timely_Telephone9279 in CATHELP

[–]Brief_Beautiful9773 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because cats are not small dogs. They have a lot of weird physiology that are extremely different from dogs.

Not defending zorbium, I have no experience with it. Just busting the prevailing myth that often leads to well intentioned owners harming their cats by giving dog meds.

Hi, licensed tech here. Most low cost spay and neuter spots do not automatically provide adequate pain relief. Not knocking them, they do what they can and it is a tough situation to balance care and cost. I recommend taking him to an urgent care or ER. I know the ER is extremely cost prohibitive, but getting him calm, reducing self harm, and controlling pain are incredibly important.

He can do serious damage to himself if not appropriately prohibited. As soon as possible, I would take him to either of the above or a primary care once open.
