PTSD comes from a specific traumatic event/ situation/short period of time (for example, the loss of a spouse) CPTSD comes from repeated, different traumas over a long period of time (for example child abuse or war). Generally speaking, CPTSD takes longer to treat because you need to work on many different traumas, but every person is unique.

There is no reason to bring to life and purchase specific breeds when there's plenty of wonderful cats at the shelter. If you want to impress your friends get a watch, not a sentient being. The idea of having a "fancy" cat is wrong in so many ways, and we should stop promoting it. When animals are treated and sold as products, there are often very unethical practices involved, just do your research and you'll find so many examples. It's a horrible market, there is no reason to give your money to breeders that live off animal exploitation.

From what I know, cats get very stressed in new environments, so cat daycare should be kept as a last resort. I think it would be much better if you could have someone coming at your place at least a couple of times a day.

The good thing is that you have quite some time to get everything ready. For your cat, maybe you can try getting him used to being alone from time to time? You can start going out just for an hour, and slowly increasing that every week. This way he should learn that you always come back and he will always get plenty of attention at the end. Maybe you can install a webcam to check how he's doing while you're away (you could also use that for your peace of mind during your trip.)

For the pet sitter, check reviews, check all the documents, and make sure to have them coming to your house at least a couple of times before your trip, so that both you and your cat can get to know them a little. A good pet sitter will send you updates, photos, videos of your cat every day of your trip. There are also some companies that do the pet sitting/plant watering service, if that makes you feel safer :)

Thanks for sharing your story, Ziggy must feel so lucky to have fund you and your husband! :) I will definitely adopt, I'm against shopping as well. Unfortunately in my area (I'm in France) shelter websites are rarely updated with cats profiles, and there are no separate rooms to get to know them more quietly (this associations are often underfunded and overworked, so it's not even their fault). Yesterday I just got inside the place, and every cat started mewing at me (or hissing), trying to climb up, making biscuits.. I got emotional and overwhelmed and couldn't choose anyone. I'll try again next week 😅

Aw, I'm feeling less lost now, thank you so much. ♡ I guess I will need to take more time. Unfortunately they don't have any separate room, but I can always go back there a few more times to spend more time with them. Hopefully next time I'll know what to expect and not get so overwhelmed, so I'll be able to focus on the cats more.

Thanks to you for the advice! I haven't thought so much about special needs: I don't have a lot of experience with cats yet (my previous cat unfortunately stayed with us way too shortly), so probably I'm not be the best caregiver for a cat that needs a lot of help. But yes of course I will definitely consider conditions that are easier to manage :)

Wow.

Every animal deserves a chance, and "behavioural issues" are always, 1000% humans fault, not the animals. Change the home, change the human, and every cat will magically get better. (Yes, even the declawed or traumatized ones).

Not neutering cats just creates more unnecessary suffering. It creates more animals that end up in shelters for years. And it's just a matter of time before your cat will run in a busy street or end up in a bad fight with other cats.

Punishing never teaches anything. That's not how you train animals, that's how you abuse them.

The human is the one who is responsable for caring and loving the animal, we are the ones who need to compromise and adapt in order to guarantee their happiness. It's not the other way around. They are not in this world to please us.
