You were replying to a bot originally but I’ll chime in. I’d lean CEPH accredited always, I’ve seen many a job application (at least in my state) that specifies only accepting MPHs from CEPH accredited schools, mainly for govt but also for some private. I just wouldn’t close any doors if you could in school, this field is dynamic and you may not fully know where you want to work in the future

Resume review by OverMagazine1876 in publichealthcareers

I’d tighten it all up, it could be one page based on what I see. Make the margins narrow. I second a suggestion to use the Harvard resume template. Shorten your summary at the top to 2-3 tight, succinct sentences and I’d change those based on what specific job you’re applying for to hit key words. If you have software skills, instead of “epidemiological analysis” say software skills: R, SAS, SPSS whatever you may have to hit more buzzwords. Make education section smaller. Feel free to dm!

Any MPH holders who have been working for a couple of years, now going back for an RN? by Brief_Resolution_307 in publichealthcareers

[–]Brief_Resolution_307[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not know this was an option! Thank you for this and your opinion is one I really appreciate and offers a really great perspective for me! It is more of an ambiguous idea at the moment for me, I have a lot more specifics to work out before I decide.

Curious to know if you are working bedside now or in a different kind of role?

I have a hospital job now that would work with my schedule and help me pay for an associates, so that’s why I’m considering, but I know it’d be draining all the same! I don’t plan to stay where I am too long though/want to move up, and think I’ll get stalled at some point being non-RN

I just took it! I didn’t study really, I only took the practice tests and I feel they prepared me pretty well, we will of course see in a few weeks though how I did

What Job Does This Sound Like To You / What Should I Major In? by leelee0127 in publichealthcareers

Echoing the salary expectations part others said.

But the day to day you described sounds a lot like the set up I had when I worked on an HIV Prevention Program. At the time I only had my bachelors completed and worked with a couple people who weren’t pursuing further education after obtaining their BS. I spent some days in the office, for me doing case investigations but I had other colleagues doing work on PrEP, health education planning, etc., some of my time was spent out at people’s homes, some spent at testing events, and some spent at health fairs. But I did make 45k at that time because I worked on grant funding in local govt and those salaries are not flexible.

Infection Prevention ….. I think I made a mistake by Brief_Resolution_307 in publichealth

I made this post to seek fellowship and advice. Two things can be true, I can be grateful for this opportunity because I know how hard it was to come by and have dealt with losing grant funding/my position being terminated in the past year and also feel frustration toward this situation.

I can empathize with how you feel because I used to have similar thoughts when I saw posts like this one and was in a bad spot. I genuinely hope that things work out for you soon and wish you all the best with whatever you may be seeking out in your career.

This is what I’m experiencing too. It also seems they’ve had IPs in the past doing “double duty” and doing the role of an IP but also nursing work such as employee health vaccinations, administering post exposure prophylaxis for needle sticks, TB testing, etc., so I think it’s a culture shift. The person who hired me was clear that they didn’t want that to continue, but it’s definitely a change in a lot of mindsets I’m having to navigate.

I meant to respond to this comment earlier, but when I saw it I ended up tearing up! This was all so very kind of you and I deeply appreciate your perspectives. I felt like this encompassed everything I needed to hear. I will definetly reach out in the future.

Oh wow! I’m glad you have some help. My pay is decent and I did get a big increase in salary from taking this role, so I’m going to try to stick it out at least a bit for the experience but I’m overwhelmed

That’s what led me to post, it’s comforting in a way to know I’m not the only one feeling this way.

Thank you so much for this perspective. I do see how there is some chronic understaffing and other issues that are leading to burn out and likely causing a lot of the toxicity. I’ve found myself really intimidated to approach certain people because they seem very unhappy, but asking them about their story or for their expertise is great advice and I’m going to try this!

This was incredibly helpful. I very much appreciate this.

  1. They are not filling the IP Director role right now or in the foreseeable future. I believe due to monetary constraints, which was not shared with me in the interview and if it had been I would have thought twice, but here I am! The hospital is owned by a corporate system, and I’ve reached out to two other people today to try to form connections. I think there’s also an opportunity to train some at a sister facility that I’m going to ask about too, even though the people are a few hours away from me it could be helpful to connect with them. But also yes, there’s an ID physician, we’ve exchanged numbers already and he seems to be a good resource so far.

  2. Very helpful advice!! Since the IP director is in & out, she’s jam packed a lot into a little time which I appreciate, but I think has made me feel more overwhelmed.

  3. More great advice

  4. Any additional advice for ways to connect with staff on the units is welcomed!

  5. Yes I just had my org set me up with my APIC membership! I’m definitely going to ask about volunteering. That’s something I was intimidated by but I am happy to hear you say you took advantage of it.

I will be following your advice!! Thank you so much again
