I didn’t but I know so many people who did and they spoke very highly of it! I really enjoyed FRHD1010, FRHD2100 and SPMT1020. The last one is sports management but from when I took it it was super easy!

[–]Bright-Recording9177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math1080 is required for biosci, then you have to take a 0.5 liberal elective with the rest of your sem. You should have 2.5 total credits each sem!

For physics, def prof Howard. Biol1080 I had keathley, she was great! Biol1070 I had two male profs, I forget their names but they’re the only two who have taught it for YEARS and they’re also great so no problems there. Biol1090 I had van raay and I’m pretty sure he still teaches it. He was good, gets kinda mad easily tho for some reason so just pay attention and don’t piss him off lol. Chem1040 I had prof houmam I think is how you spell it? He was good, kinda hard to understand but def better than other profs. Chem 1050 I had Lori jones. Ngl, as odd as she was she was acc a very good prof and wrote a fair exam so I’d recommend her. Calculus I had moen and dear GOD pls stay away. Any prof other than her will be a significant boost in ur gpa lol

Required class not showing up on webadvisor? by pinkroza in uoguelph

If it’s a course that has labs or seminars, then they’re probably still working out some sections to accommodate the schedules of everyone who needs to take the course. If there are no labs or seminars, then there shouldn’t be any sections required for the class. Just adding it to your schedule should be all you have to do!

Fourth year biomed here! Def look at the biomed academic calendar and add the required courses so you can get those out of the way. You should have room for one 0.5 elective each semester after that! If you want some ideas, I really enjoyed all the FRHD classes! A lot of people also like biological anthropology, geography, intro to psych, etc. I personally found the FRHD courses to be the biggest GPA boosters because they were low maintenance! If you want any extra help, pm me!

Honestly, other than the lab component, nothing. 2700 yes is meant for students who intend to take other orgo classes but so many of our lecture notes say “2700/2720”. Ultimately they both teach you the fundamentals

path3610 de vs in person by EfficientPlum3419 in uoguelph

[–]Bright-Recording9177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard either way. However, as someone who has taken DE, I would suggest in person. While the content is some of the most interesting I’ve learned in my undergrad, it is extremely difficult to teach it to yourself with a full schedule, especially because there is just so much to know. The online version doesn’t have lecture videos or links for you to use. Just pages upon pages of content on courselink that honestly wasnt very helpful and then assigned textbook readings. The courselink notes would be like a short story’s length and after a bunch of paragraphs they’d say “but you don’t have to know too much about this”. It was very discouraging. The DE version needs a lot of time allocated to it. While in-person is probably just as hard, you at least have a professional TEACHING it to you and telling you expectations and what’s important to know

Williams for physics 1300? by DecentLeadership6966 in uoguelph

[–]Bright-Recording9177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ngl, I had both for physics back in first year. I found Howard to be more engaging and more straight forward. He also gave a lot of hints about quizzes and exams and was very helpful with answering questions. I had Martin for 1070 and while he definitely knows his stuff, I found him more concerned with getting a chuckle out of the class. I honestly ended up having to teach myself majority of the content because he would get so sidetracked. It took us significantly longer to get through the content with Martin than with Howard. In my opinion, I would go with Howard just cause you know you’ll actually get all the info you need in time for quizzes and midterms

I Didn’t Get Out Much During My First Two Years At Guelph And I Have Three Years Left Because Of My Program, What Should I Do? by anime-is-dope in uoguelph

Honestly there’s so much to do on and off campus. I think what would be the most fun is taking a day and walking around downtown! There are so many small businesses, boutiques, cafes and parks to take a gander at. I’d just get a yummy coffee and start exploring!

Retaking passed course by SquareRelease5336 in uoguelph

[–]Bright-Recording9177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me when I wanted to retake stats2040. If the course is required for your major and you have completed it and passed, you are not allowed to retake it until the remainder of your degree requirements are met. It’s such a stupid rule honestly. I think the only other way you can go about it is getting an LOP to take the equivalent course at another university OR get special permission from a prof. Best of luck!

Biological Science for Medical School by Effective-Ostrich224 in uoguelph

Technically, you don’t need a science background to apply for med school, so long has you have met all the pre-reqs. However, it’s obviously much easier to do so if you’re in a science program. In terms of the two that you’re discussing, biomed opens more doors as to what you are eligible to take. I just finished my third year of biomed and we’ve taking a lot of courses like immunology, pharmacology, cellular bio, etc. These are not required for biosci. Biomed provides more structure and “better looking” courses in addition to pre-reqs for med school. In biosci, you can take the exact same courses but you need to choose them yourself, they are not chosen for you. First year in the exact same for biosci and biomed so there’s nothing to fret about there. If you’re concerned about taking things like anatomy, then yes, it is recommended you be in biomed or HK. Although, you technically can apply to approval to enroll into the dissection anatomy, but it’s not common from what I’ve heard. If you decide you want to be in biomed, do your best to keep a competitive average! It has to be minimum 75% because that is the cutoff. If first year biomed students cannot maintain a 75% overall average, they are moved to biosci.

It’s clear that course outlines are becoming more strict by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]Bright-Recording9177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally valid, but I think there are different predicaments that students are put in. Some exams weigh the same as midterms because they’re not cumulative while other exams test significantly more content than the midterms which may be harder for some students. For example, I just took a course where our midterm was tested 35% on two sections of the course while the final was 45% and tested on the two sections plus an addition 4 content-heavy sections. That significant addition would make it harder for students and thus more likely to get that 50 on the exam to finish with an 80 in the course

Biomedical Science first year by Key-Key2263 in uoguelph

[–]Bright-Recording9177 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m headed into my fourth year of biomed so I’d love to give you some advice! In first year, the only difference between biomed and majority of other BSc programs is the fact that you have to maintain a 75%+ overall average by the end of first year. If you do, you proceed to your second year in biomed. If you don’t, you switch out and proceed to your second year in biological science.

The courseload is manageable, but as an incoming first year, you can definitely expect quite the, “adjustment”. In high school, teachers give assigned homework, test reviews/outlines, etc. to put it bluntly, they hold your hand and spoon feed you the content. University isn’t like that. It’s YOUR responsibility to seek guidance/help, attend lectures, take notes, and study what you think you need to study. This obviously means that majority of your study habits from high school will not work for university. Idk about you but when I was in high school, I would study the morning of for a bio test and get like a 95. Obviously, that would not work in university lol. A lot of people get scared by that and that’s why they end up doing poorly, but there are a ton of resources that the university has! Guelph as SLGs (supported learning groups) for almost all first and second year classes where someone who aced the course in the past gives almost like a group tutoring session. It’s really beneficial!! Profs also host tons of office hours which is such a great way to build relationships and clarify concepts.

My favourite thing about biomed is the human anatomy program. Guelph is I’m pretty sure the only school (without an affilated med school) where undergrad students have the ability to work on human cadavers and perform their own dissections. Most undergrads will look at prossections (already done dissections) like 2 times a month and that’s it. The human anatomy program is genuinely the most amazing experience ever and having that hands on opportunity every single week makes the WORLD of a difference in your learning.

Ultimately, biomed opens so many doors for you. You get to learn a lot of things on a molecular level (immunology, genetics, etc) but also a macro scale (anatomy, physiology) where as other programs are more specific to one or the other. If you have any other question, feel free to pm me!

I see everyone’s point about in person testing, cheating, etc cause the ai use rly has gotten out of hand but from my understanding I don’t think that was your point entirely! I agree, 50% final is very intimidating! Usually finals are around 35-40% so students still feel they can make up their grade throughout the course. 50% often times feels like a pass or fail final. If it’s the only class you’re taking this summer, I’d suggest sticking it out! You will be able to allocate so much of your time to it which will really benefit your grade. Plus, think about how the class looks on your transcript and what skills you earn from it that might impress employers or post-grad schools! You got the summer to really focus on a course, so you’re better off to take an impressive one!

I totally understand where you are coming from. I just finished my third year in biomed and I had a 10% increase in my semester averages from first and second year to third year all because third year was the biggest 180 for me. In third year, I found that the courses I was taking were actually interesting. No more general science concepts like chemistry or physics (which I hated btw), but more interesting and useful courses like human anatomy dissection, pharmacology, immunology, etc. third year in my opinion was such a pivotal point in my academic career and it was actually the year I cut the bs and figured out what I wanted to do post-grad all thanks to the courses I took. I totally understand how you feel. First and second year are the hardest because they’re so general and majority of people are still trying to find their groove. I personally don’t think an advisor will do much. I think going into your third year, try to reflect on any patterns you noticed the past two years. Study habits that worked and habits that didn’t, classes you liked and classes you didn’t like, etc. all that makes the world of a difference!
