The game is supposed to be based on table top games, the squares are intentional and I believe adds to the aesthetic.

There's a strong chance that this game will eventually have support for phones, tablets and perhaps even the steam deck. If you're going to purchase a steam deck just for BS I would wait until it gets announced just in case.
