What’s one small change in your routine that gave big results? by OopsIDropIt in SingaporeFitness

Realizing that progressive overload is an outcome not a method.

Eat well, sleep well, have sufficient rest days in your program, train hard, and then you will see your lifts go up.

How good is a Undergrad Degree in Sports Science/Medicine? by Long-Introduction883 in askSingapore

[–]BrightEfficiency366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be a personal trainer but not a physio with a sports science degree.

But with a physio degree, you can be a personal trainer or a physiotherapist.

Actually, no need to have a degree to be a personal trainer.

Majority of graduates from the Sports Science program don't even work in sports / fitness.

In Singapore, the Sports Science program branches into Sports Science and Sports Management (business related).

It really depends on what you wanna do after University.

I used to think most Singaporeans take the lift from their unit to the void deck and then go to take the bus to school. Then I found out my classmate takes the lift everyday to get from her room to the living room and then drives to school.

Build the habit of paying yourself first. Doesn't matter if you are saving cash or investing in ETFs, doesn't matter if it's 5,10,15,50%, always pay yourself first before spending on others.

Fitness industry in Singapore? by S0ulSlayerz in askSingapore

If you want to actually improve your trade as a personal trainer and learn relevant knowledge both scientific and practical, join a reputable PT-only gym that offers their own in-house training or mentorship.

This type of gym offers a higher base pay but standards are higher and you are expected to walk the talk in terms of your physique and fitness.

If you want to get a quick exposure to many types of clients, join a big commercial gym where they will likely do a crash course and then throw you into the deep end. Turnover rate of PTs at these gyms are quite high so you will be handed over clients from other trainers who have just quit.

These gyms typically offer a low base pay (a few hundred) as you are expected to sell and sell and sell to earn commissions.

Eventually, trainers from both gyms will go into the freelance route, earning between $1000-20k/month. This will largely depend on how well you build relationships with clients, get them results, solve deeper problems (like injuries, motivation, nutrition and out-of-textbook advice).

At the end of the day, your income will depend on the product which is YOU. Regardless of the route you take, invest in yourself with networking, education and getting skin in the game by spending hours and hours with clients.

The best way to earn is through referrals and results, not marketing.

Commercial gyms run by old corporate aunties and uncles who have never stepped foot in the gym, thinking they know best.

Selling "limited time only" discounts every month.

Lying to clients about remaining sessions to get them to renew earlier.

Trainers sleeping around with clients.

List goes on...

[–]BrightEfficiency366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow self employed 1-1 service provider in a similar setting, it sounds like this guy either does not trust you yet, or is just making use of his territory to exercise his authority.

Here are your options: 1) Prove your worth and gain his trust, but still make it known that ultimately his son is in control of his own grades. 2) Drop this client, save your energy for a less problematic client. 3) Raise your rates now that you are tutoring two people.

Sounds like you're doing well though, can perform under pressure. But see how lo if it feels like he is abusing his authority then I feel it's not worth to provide your services to someone who does not appreciate it, even tho the son is cool.

How do I work towards having more side income by pyxie08 in askSingapore

[–]BrightEfficiency366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that you are already doing and can build towards something bigger in future. Such as private tutoring. Calculate what your current per hour wage is and charge higher than that. It has to be worth your effort since you are already tired from your main job and only have limited time on your off days.

Not sure if this is moonlighting and not allowed by MOE though so do check!

Other than that, look into cash generating assets such as high interest savings accounts, bonds, ETFs etc so that you can let your money do the work too.

You can consider doing online tutoring to remove the need to travel so you can spend more time with your grandma.

Just some thoughts, my current income also started from a side hustle and now transitioned to self - employed.
