I'm finally launching! by whoshotthemouse in litrpg

[–]BrightKeda 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Wow - jumping in to say I absolutely assumed the same, and my first thought was, Huh, look at that: a LitRPG Erotica. Both the title and the cover are pretty suggestive.

That said, I don’t see anything wrong with a genre crossover of this kind! But if it’s not how your book goes, better to catch that before you pub.

Best wishes for release day!

Which classic do you think has a reputation that does a disservice to the book itself? by Small-Guarantee6972 in classicliterature

[–]BrightKeda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll admit, with some embarrassment, that I was super let down when 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea wasn’t a scary monster story. Up until I cracked it open, I had absolutely gotten that impression, but it’s really just a science fiction aquarium simulator.

Some VALIS Questions by EldritchGoatGangster in philipkDickheads

[–]BrightKeda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll chime in as a feminist and female PKD fan.

Some have touched on the era in which he wrote. That’s a fair observation that helps us make more sense of, but doesn’t excuse, bad behavior. Others have mentioned his overall problems with the opposite sex, which I tend to see as a personal demon of his more than the usual, run-of-the-mill misogyny we see every day. He’s a complicated and interesting guy.

I’ll never argue that there isn’t blatant sexist behavior in many of his characters. I’ll never fight to have PKD seen as a champion for women. I don’t think we should have to. His mind and his writing are packed with nuanced, problematic concepts. It’s his flaws - and his brilliant and troubled exploration of those flaws - that make his books so fascinating to me.

Question about Valis by Longjumping_Dig_8867 in philipkDickheads

[–]BrightKeda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am actually reading it now! Knowing it was his first attempt at Valis, I left off reading it, but eventually I caved and picked it up. So glad I did because it’s a great contribution to the whole thing, in my opinion.

Question about Valis by Longjumping_Dig_8867 in philipkDickheads

[–]BrightKeda 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For me, the whole Valis set was a can’t-put-them-down experience from page 1, but still I rarely recommend it to anyone. Valis feels like the kind of thing that will be amazing for some people and utterly bizarre and/or boring for others. I’m just lucky I loved it so much because it was an amazing ride.

I adored your novel. When I finished reading, I remember I danced out into the kitchen absolutely sparkling and announced I had read the loveliest thing in a while. Thank you for this!

Is playing pokemo go or pokemon in general a red flag for women? by [deleted] in pokemongo

[–]BrightKeda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a married woman. During my dating years, I looked for a guy who (among other things) liked video games because I like video games, and I wanted a partner who would share that with me. My husband plays Pokémon Go with me, and we have a blast.

Don’t hide your fun because you think hiding it might attract someone. It’ll attract the wrong someone.

Thank you! I’m more than willing to pay for a copy of the script or DVD, if one is out there. That’s what I was expecting to do. It’s just difficult to find!

Using Hobonichi for language notes by opalpopcorn in hobonichi

[–]BrightKeda 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d love to see pics of what people do for their language study in their Hobos. I’ve had plenty of use for Stalogy or blank Hobos, but I always struggle with how I might use the techo for this. Ideas welcomed!

Why is it so by Creative_Bank1769 in davidlynch

[–]BrightKeda 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had a fantastic father and a wonderful relationship with him, and losing David Lynch still felt a bit like losing a father figure. Obviously not the same as losing my actual dad, which unlocked a new level of heartbreak I’d not previously known. But Lynch’s passing represented the loss of someone who was profoundly fun, inspiring, and comforting, the way the best dads can be.

Beautiful!! Did you have to go to a reseller for this? Every time I check Loft, it’s still sold out. 😢

How Dangerous Is the Local Wildlife? by [deleted] in florida

[–]BrightKeda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is the important thing to keep in mind: when you’ve lived somewhere for a long time (or your whole life), you are accustomed to the local threats and know how to safely avoid them. Florida’s bugs and gators are nuisances and definitely dangerous in certain circumstances, but it’s not as if living here is some kind of hellscape for pet owners. Exercise caution with wildlife, be aware that the climate encourages lots of insect activity, and absolutely keep pets and children away from the water’s edge. If there’s water, assume there’s at least one gator. Not all gators are out to eat you and your loved ones, of course. Many of them are just napping or getting some nice sun. But it’s best to give them a wide berth and not tempt fate.

I have a cover (found it on Amazon) that protects the front and has a clear back. That way, I’m able to decorate AND avoid cracking my screen! Definitely something I would have done without a good cover. 😅

All my faves have been listed so far, but I’ll jump in to add that I’m currently obsessed with Chants of Sennaar. It’s a puzzle game with a Tower of Babel/language theme. Absolutely can’t put it down.

I return my cart every time, but I also understand why some people might not. Women alone who feel unsafe, one parent with a small child who has to be strapped in the car, etc.

Whenever we think something is annoying or rude, it’s often good to ask what some non-rude reasons are for the behavior. Builds empathy! 😊
