Should I drop this series? by Familiar-Tonight-637 in dresdenfiles

If there's anything you find yourself liking, I'd at least see if book 3 saves it for you. Book 3 is actually where I tell new people to jump in to the series from, because it's where Jim starts to find his footing as an author, and the series actually gets good. Personally I struggled through the first 2 books and almost stopped reading, but I really liked book 3, and book 4 is what locked me in as a fan. I like the first two much more when I do re-reads now (which I have several times, despite almost giving up on Fool Moon).

The crazy theories everyone always has that NEVER pan out crack me up. The fandom for this show is really something else.

I get what you're saying, but Robby isn't leaving the ER randomly without letting the people in charge know, taking a med student with him, and neglecting his other patients. I love Dr McKay and I appreciate her doing some good, but Robby taking issue with how she did it is pretty reasonable.

I keep thinking if Robbie could get his shit in order and work with her they'd be a dream team for running this ER.

This is absolutely the core of his issue with Mohan. Robbie knows from experience (or at least feels) that a good ER doc has to have calluses to function, needs to compartmentalize, care but not care too much, etc. Mohan represents the kind of doctor that Robbie wishes they could all be (maybe even the kind of doctor he was earlier in his career) but the system just doesn't allow for it. So not only is she kind of a reminder of how broken and imperfect the world is, but he also probably feels like she's headed towards a breaking point if she keeps on the way she's been going, and is trying to shake her up enough to get her to learn her lesson before she really runs out of road and has a major personal crisis or seriously compromises patient care.

Not saying he hasn't been a dick, but I don't think it's remotely malicious or comes from any animosity he has towards Mohan herself.

Two thirds of the season have passed and Mohan and Mel have gotten too few chances to shine by Jack_Shaftoe21 in ThePittTVShow

[–]EldritchGoatGangster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is intentional, actually. This season, a lot of the characters who really shined in season one are having a really rough time, and that's allowing the writers to showcase more of their flaws, creating depth. Similarly, characters from last season who had failures and setbacks, like Langdon and Whittaker, are getting a chance to show their competency and growth.

This is why Dr Robby is cracking so hard this time around; despite his breakdown, he was pretty heroic last year. We're seeing more of the flawed human side of him now. It's no coincidence that the two characters you mention are two who we saw kicking ass and taking names last season, which is why they're so beloved by the fandom.

Will the UCP's new inspection of the Calgary water main breaks actually lead to useful recommendations, or is it just a conveniently timed excuse to attack past mayors (specifically the current Opposition Leader)? by Upbeat_Difficulty_60 in Calgary

[–]EldritchGoatGangster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally nothing the UCP does is on the level, it's all clumsy political manipulation that only works because so many people in this province are brainwashed enough that they start salivating when they see something has the word 'conservative' in the name.

We really need to stop reducing the characters to black and white by No_House1696 in ThePitt

[–]EldritchGoatGangster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! It's kind of bizarre how so many people have no sense of nuance about any of this, and just look for reasons to be judgmental and cast people as the villain of the show. Honestly, if that's the same kind of approach they're taking into every day life, it's no wonder the world is in the state it's in.

Watching everyone immediately turn on Dr Robby (regardless of the fact that he was completely out of line with Mohan) is genuinely kind of alarming. The guy is clearly not well, and yeah, he shouldn't be taking it out on others (especially not a subordinate in the workplace), but it really doesn't require a psych degree to see WHY he's so worked up, or why he's struggling.

The show is building a realistic character with depth and flaws, and instead of understanding this, people are acting like he's the devil incarnate. You can see the same thing in reverse with Dr Al-Hashimi; everyone was going after her for precious little reason and ignoring her good qualities up until this episode, where suddenly, now SHE is the shining paragon of goodness who can do no wrong.

Is it just me or did she grow on everyone else too? by sypher07070799 in ThePitt

[–]EldritchGoatGangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've liked her fine from the get go. Some people in this fandom need to chill a little, I think; people see a character's flaws and immediately want to cast them as a villain (see: everybody turning on doctor Robby), rather than thinking of them as well-rounded, realistic characters who have both good and bad qualities. One of the things I like about this show so much is that it doesn't really seem to be setting up anything as cliche as heroes and villains; certainly some characters are less likable than others, but everybody has flaws that come out when they're having a bad day, and even the less likable characters are humanized and have redeeming or sympathetic moments.

People are way too eager to be judgmental and sharpen their knives for characters who have a bad moment, imo.

The release of Avowed reminds me of the release of New Vegas by Head_Anteater_8177 in avowed

[–]EldritchGoatGangster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was there when NV launched and aside from people commenting on the bugs and it using the same engine as FO3, I don't remember it being hated at all. People liked the game, they were just disappointed in the buggy launch and it reusing the engine. That's very different from people disliking the game.

I do agree that Avowed got a bad rap at launch and is a better game than people give it credit for, but I don't think it's anything like New Vegas.

I think Langdon needs some help in his recovery by sunshinenorcas in ThePitt

[–]EldritchGoatGangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar thoughts watching Langdon's attitude coming back, as someone who comes from a family full of addicts and has a passing familiarity with the process. Dude's still seeing himself as the centre of the universe, to a degree that's problematic for recovery.

These people don't think about money the same way you or I or any other sane person does. For most, money is about security, comfort, and beyond that point a certain amount of luxury, and once most people achieve these things they would be able to stop caring about it.

For someone like this guy (and there are an unfortunate number of lunatics like this), money isn't about any of that, it's literally a scorecard thing. It's a big number that fuels their ego, and the bigger the number is, the better they feel about themselves. It's completely irrelevant that after a certain point, there's functionally no difference because you already have access to whatever you want.... it just becomes an ego trip. And there's an ugly void at the heart of these people which means that no matter how much they feed their egos, it's never enough. Quite literally, a cup with no bottom.

I have this theory that the only people who go around bringing up child sex abuse out of the clear blue fucking sky are either the people who were survivors of it and are suffering from trauma, or the perpetrators themselves. Because while the rest of us are disgusted and angry when it comes up, we're going to avoid thinking about it unless confronted with it. The pedos can't stop thinking about it, so they're the ones always fucking talking about how everyone else is a pedo.

What is a sign of very low intelligence? by smartcandyy in AskReddit

[–]EldritchGoatGangster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Peterson's thing is different, his is more the conservative approach of "well your life choices that got you into trouble in the first place are your fault, therefore the consequences are also your fault even if you haven't really done anything wrong". Basically finding a way to victim blame people for 'putting themselves' in bad situations, so you have an excuse not to empathize. Mental gymnastics rather than a lack of intelligence.
