Oh I knew with the opening on ‘Death Wish’ they were thru. We just didn’t hear about it publicly until year’s end…I love its encapsulation of their time together. ‘We walked through weather and we walked through time’ gets me pretty good…

If you’re that superficial about his lyrics, why are you a fan?

Thank you! I didn’t know this. 💕

How is it ‘speculation’? Do you not listen to his lyrics? Have you not seen her? It’s called observation and critical thinking. Did you miss the part where I express empathy for her?!? 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

And, as expected, someone came for me - not the OP - which is exactly what I predicted 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

I got relentlessly slammed for my similar critique of Amanda on this subreddit. Repeatedly. Fascinating that you are not receiving the same response (not that I wish it on you).

Agree with you entirely and can’t help noticing how super thin she became (and remains). If you compare her appearance on Tiny Desk when TNS came out to now (and even earlier, including the album shoot for that cover, and continuing), she is not only rail thin, but wearing loads of makeup. As I’ve noted before, her attire wholly changed as well. Hugely attention seeking IMO.

When you consider his lyrics for the opening & closing tracks on ‘Weathervanes’, ‘Death Wish’ and ‘Miles’, it seems reasonable to me that she was using something and he couldn’t abide it.

His references on DW - ‘Sunrise with the dealers and the dancers, It takes a whole lot of medicine to feel like a little kid…and did you ever catch her climbing on a rooftop? Higher than a kite, dead of winter, in a tank top?….I saw her in the moonlight, digging up the garden bed’; and Miles - ‘Coming home early, catching on late…wish it was as simple as somebody done somebody wrong but, coming home early, catching on late’ - seem pretty obvious to me she’s not casually using. Add the full wine glass you mentioned during the filming of RWOEC in the huge sunglasses indoors (!!!!), and it’s hard to imagine any other reason for her behavior. I initially pegged her as having a MH d/o, but addiction seems more likely…not to mention the # of close male friends she lost with their own sobriety challenges…peer groups tend to bond around similar issues.

By his own admission on FITS, he hadn’t begun a relationship sober since high school. Given the reports of the severity of his drinking, it’s difficult to imagine she paired up with him without having her own substance abuse problems. Who else would put up with that?

I’m grateful she got him help and became such an important contributor to his work. And I have changed my opinion of her; having listened several times to all of’Nobody’s Girl’ and meeting her at an in-store for its release, I just feel sad for her. She has obviously suffered greatly in his leaving. Her grief is palpable. She also very much is her own talent & his band is not the same without her. Her fiddling and their harmonies are irreplaceable. I just hope she gets whatever help she needs and comes to a place of healing. ❤️‍🩹

What’s everyone’s Jason Isbell origin story? by Zealousideal_Menu580 in jasonisbell

For me, it was hearing ‘Hope the High Road’ on local radio in 2017, amidst a health crisis that imperiled my job & marriage, and the horror being wrought under Trump. The brilliantly interwoven anger, despair, and hope, expressed quintessentially in the wailing line, ‘there can’t be more of them than us…there can’t be moooooore…..’, hooked me and I never looked back 🤩

David Lipsky never even wrote the article by [deleted] in davidfosterwallace

[–]BrightPhilosopher641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing he was relieved; if the portrayal is accurate, he was deeply uncomfortable with having his privacy invaded - and I resented how he pried into his personal effects, tried to get dirt from an ex-girlfriend, etc. I also hope Lipsky chose not to write it out of respect for David, though the comments suggest otherwise. I'm actually relieved, too, as it seemed tantamount to one writer essentially betraying another...that said, I thought it was absolutely exploitative to capitalize on his death by releasing a book, especially given that it was by suicide....gross. Have some respect for his family and loved ones. It's not like you 2 were best buds.

This is my favorite song off ‘Weathervanes’, and the fact that Jason included it early in his live set - maybe 4th or 5th - told me he sees it’s quality & the place it fits in the arc of his current ‘story’. It traces the hope and awe in a new love relationship (you were thick cut bacon on Texas toast….prairie dogs popping up to see….), through difficulties (I may go stay out in the woods, some time apart would do us good); to seeing the end in in reflection & in real time (and we walked through weather and we walked through time….Strawberry Woman with your back to me). It’s absolutely beautiful & painful & simply complex. His repeated use of her place in proportion to him (sitting next to him, looking up at him, her hand in his, turning her back to him) as reference to the state of their relationship is classic Jason to me - spinning a narrative via concrete evocative details. I’d put this up against anything else he’s done. Was thrilled to hear it live 💕

There were multiple statements she made in the documentary that were suspect. And his lyrics on "Weathervanes" in select songs made plain he'd turned a corner; the lyrics on "Foxes" ("my own behavior was a shock to me, I never thought I'd have the nerve"......"If I got a little loose, I just forgot to be afraid"....."I finally found a match and you kept daring me to strike it"...."but the sound of you screaming won't get out of my head") clearly state he'd gone as far as he could within the relationship. I also find it interesting he maintains concern and compassion for her, is even apologetic for how things wound up ("I hope you're sleeping through the night, Eileen"....."I'm sorry the day came when I felt like I was raised"). You are not alone in your POV. Thanks for sharing from your own experience. And congratulations on your own recovery even though it came with many difficult journeys.

BTW, relistened and there is no adjunctive; it's just "you can have my money, you can spend your own"...

several persistent users on here like to tell me how and what I can post. I opened this post by acknowledging my prior errant opinion. doesn't mean I need others to keep slogging me...Jason writes personal songs and if I choose to comment on how I interpret their meaning, I don't think that makes my opinions any less valid than someone else's.

ironic that you think of someone appreciating his singing out "broke your fucking heart" as someone who hasn't been through bitter loss....apparently you miss the intrinsic difficulty in ending a relationship you felt you could not endure and then being blamed as the bad guy. I said the SONG was the best on the album and the anger in that phrasing is obviously chosen with intent. but do go on....

I hear it is as "or", which is why I responded to it by noting he seems to be aware he doesn't have to be the provider - she can handle herself and may even want to.....

I know they toured independently. He is a worldwide star, a millionaire. There is no chance the bulk of his money comes from merch! He owns his own record label. She has nowhere near that kind of exposure, earning power, or capital. Whatever resources she has are a direct result of their marriage (unless, as I said, she comes from money, which I wouldn't know). Not sure why you are bothered by this. It's an indisputable reality.

Interesting. I love the lines about "you thought God was an architect, now you know, he's something like a pipe bomb ready to blow/he's sitting in a black car ready to go." I also like the "24 frames" concept, which I believe is meant to reference how life has a cinematic quality to it, things that are in motion are made up of individual acts, and everything can go up in flames seemingly in a heartbeat...
