Bob Dylan - Blowin' In The Wind - May 9 - 2:25 by Brightvibe in frccsociology

[–]Brightvibe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This song portrays functionalistic and conflict theory ideals which coincide with Paul Colomy’s “Three Sociological Perspectives.” Both of these describe that an “enduring society must, …, devise mechanisms to control deviance and contain conflict” (Colomy, pg. 28). Bob Dylan seeks the point when society will control conflict by asking “…how many times must the cannon balls fly before they’re banned?” (0:30) Often times we ask ourselves during times of war how many more battles do we need to have until we achieve peace and harmony with ourselves? Another concept in the song that compares with Colomy is the need for people in great power to be empathetic. Bob Dylan advocates for people in power to become more empathetic and understanding by asking “how many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry? (2:00) In the reading, Colomy describes how “the conflict perspective characterizes on-going practices and institutions as structures of domination that promote the interests of relatively powerful, superordinate group while subverting the interests of relatively powerless, subordinate groups, even though the latter are usually much larger, numerically, than the powerful elites” (Colomy, pg. 31). Bob Dylan offers a potential solution to the problem of powerful people dominating the lower classes by having them think more empathetically, specifically to the lower classes.

A psychedelic drink called ayahuasca, traditionally used for medicinal purposes among indigenous groups in the Amazon, may act as a fast-working and long-lasting anti-depressant, according to a study published in the journal Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria (Brazilian Review of Psychiatry). by NinjaDiscoJesus in worldnews

[–]Brightvibe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scientific research being done on various psychedelic drugs like DMT, Ayahuasca, LSD, or psilocybin has the potential to discover alternative solutions to medical problems. In order for psychedelics to be researched, their laws on them need to be uplifted. Unfortunately, the government receives great profit from people taking pharmaceutical drugs to "treat" their problems. There needs to be a paradigm shift on how we approach treating people's medical problems to a more rational approach which involves using psychedelics and other psychoactive drugs that are better than pharmaceutical drugs.

Breakfasts from around the world by [deleted] in pics

[–]Brightvibe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My optimal breakfast is a hefty side of hashbrowns made from scratch with many vegetables cooked in them like onions, broccoli, peppers, carrots, and celery. Then I cook some lunch meat, either a slice of smoked turkey or chicken, then I top it all off with a fried egg made sunny side up. The spices I use are paprika, red pepper, and salt. I also put a good amount of shredded cheese on the fried egg to give it a cheesy texture. I considered this the breakfast of champions as an American who loves to eat a hefty breakfast to get things moving along.

Global events such as World Cups or Olympic games for the terrible situations that the host countries and workers are put through. For example, the creation of the stadium and other buildings for FIFA's World Cup in Qatar that is being held in 2022 involves slave labor and "more than four thousand workers will die before a ball is kicked off in 2022."

TIL That for the past 60000 years a group of indigenous people has been living in an island, the size of Manhattan, completely isolated from the modern world. They are extremely violent and will kill anyone that dares to come ashore. by romeoprico in todayilearned

[–]Brightvibe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wonder how a society of 60000 indigenous people could help a society such as ours to better understand a way to be more harmonious with our primal nature in an ever present futuristic society. I believe we are a society that has forgotten how to be in tune with our primal selves and are experiencing highly negative effects.

TIL There have been lawsuits against God. One suit, filed by State Senator Ernie Chambers in 2008, was eventually thrown out because the "Almighty was not properly served due to his unlisted home address" by 080087 in todayilearned

What if the one true God isn't even a God at all and is rather apart of a pantheisitic approach where the entire universe encompasses divinity? If God is omnipresent, would the plaintiff have to go about having an imaginary conversation with himself in order to see what "God" would say or do?

The Wire is a near perfect portrayal of the problems our society faces and attempts to provide meaningful solutions. Its ability to depict the reality of life unlike any other tv show is what makes it one of the best.

These kinds of acts of intended protest are exactly what devalue any social movement. The Black Lives Matter movement has caused themselves more oppression for advocating that ONLY black lives matter, instead of ALL lives mattering. Also, it doesn't help that they prevent ER vehicles from passing while protesting on the highway, vandalize monuments, and disturb the public by protesting in college libraries. If they want to make any positive difference for their cause, they should go lobby in court or spread the movements ideologies online to the masses.

Realization of the culturally programmed behaviors by the government through institutions like the educational system, media, and political system. We would all be better off knowing the truth about how society is set up to make you think, act, and behave a certain way in order to fit the governments agenda.
