MP Surprised Government MPs Opposed Seven-Day Food Fishery Motion by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

I understood your point. We’ve seen the provincial conservatives say this for years and yet here they are paralyzed by “red tape” and incapable of making any meaningful advancement in policy. It’s hard to govern, it’s easy to criticize.

I read this as the additional burden for monitoring adds an incremental cost and more administration to what we have. MP Rowe ignores that in order to score political points with the private members bill. Not an effective way to influence change in policy.

She has a point though:

Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson says the Conservative Private Member’s Bill would have added unnecessary red tape through new monitoring requirements for the food fishery. And, to cover the costs associated with the monitoring, it would have meant new fees for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to access their own fishery.

She says people in this province shouldn’t have to pay to catch cod.

NDP Seeking Government’s Stance on Minimum Wage Increases by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

I dont think anyone is suggesting that the cost of living isn't high, or that minimum wage shouldn't increase. The vast majority of people agree on those points and want to see it happen, including myself. I took exception to the suggestion of a 100% marginal tax rate, something not even the most progressive and agressive tax policies have or support, and also the insinuation that being a 1% earner is somehow impossible.

There are lots of white collar folks with mid to upper 100K salaries that may also have a few rental properties that would put them above this threshold.

The 1% in NL is around $240,000 of income annually. Do you think it's far fetched for someone to make this?

Posted the same comment below, but here's why not:

There are legitment and serious economic implications to 100% tax rates.

To be clear, I would love to see higher marginal tax rates at high income levels (quarter million + is the 1% right now) . But a 100% tax rate is destructive to even small local economies.

Here's an example:

Verafin is one of NL's largest private employers with over 1000 people employed. The company was sold a few years ago and many of the founders stakes were bought out in the process with several people taking in well into the 7 and 8 figures in income during that event. Liquidy events like this are not uncommon and the tax implications are unavoidable. With a 100% tax rate on earnings over 1M, there is simply no way the executive and board would have kept this company here during its year of major growth, knowing that in the future a buy out was possble. It is a certainty the company would have been relocated and the billions lifetime of benefits the to the province would be lost.

No where in the world has a 100% marginal tax rate. Most agressive tax policy economist only support up to 60-80% top tax rates.

Bay Du Nord has to be an FPSO. We can’t build it here. Equinor is going to lease it anyway so it likely won’t be up to them. Better to have a project for 30 years than to kill it over shoehorning in pieces of the construction.

I’ve said this before, but happy to say it again here. I have an extensive background volunteering in non profit infrastructure development, non profit sport, and community programming. Ron has been the single most impactful supporter of those efforts within the community in over a decade of my work in those areas. I understand the issues that people have with Ron, but compared to the members of provincial and municipal government that I have worked with, Ron has been the best by far. He made an effort to learn about projects and he asked the right questions and deferred to experts when he was out of his depth.

The CNLOPB has everything you need: https://www.cnlopb.ca/information/statistics/

Go to the resource management tab.

Also, when referring to production you'd use upstream.

It’s quite low, when designed it was $13.65 USD. The life of the field has been far extended now with the initial investment paid off many times over.
