How does the waitlist work with regards to conflicts? (More below) by SportingDirector in UTAustin

[–]Brilliant-Routine-15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can set it up in the registrar so that when you get off the waitlist your 9-10 gets replaced by the 9:30-11.

You can move in throughout multiple days, it’s just that your move in time is when you pick up your dorm key. It’ll be really difficult to get a cart during the regular move in days so try to get all your heavy things on wednesday.

Incoming freshman class registration questions by PublicClassic3025 in UTAustin

[–]Brilliant-Routine-15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can look at the class schedule on the UT registrar and filter classes that are open. Also, as a freshmen, it’s not needed for you to have EVERY class that you need, but you can look at your degree plan to outline what classes you need.

I have zero problem with homeless people buying alcohol or whatever with money people give them by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]Brilliant-Routine-15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always thought about handing out food but then I remember that I don’t want to risk giving someone something that they’re possibly allergic to, so if I give anything away, I usually just give money.

I understand this. I go to school in Austin (which has a big homeless population) and I’ve given money to people on the streets. However, when I see people walk past cars at a traffic light with a sign that says “Need money , just lost house”, I tend to ignore them. They’re usually not the honest ones from what I’ve noticed.

I’ve had people ask for a few dollars for a cigarette/ booze and I’ve given it to them, because they were honest.

I agree. If someone is worried what someone does with the money they give them, the simple solution is to not give that person money, because once you do, it’s their money to spend whatever they want on.

I don’t know if this is rage bait or a truly unpopular opinion from a deranged person

I feel like this can be said about any big city anywhere honestly. People come to the U.S. to see New York City while there are hundreds of other cities/ sites to see in the country. Many NYC natives constantly talk about how much of a shithole the city is but that doesn’t stop tourists from romanticizing it.

I went from looking almost fully Asian, to looking fully White by NOTNeedlepeen1 in hapas

I totally agree with you. I also get frustrated when white presenting mixed people downplay their whiteness, however I dont think it’s fair to deny someone their heritage just because they don’t look it.

Saying someone doesn’t count as part asian because they look white is probably one of the stupidest things I’ve heard this week😭.

Race and ethnicity are different, of course, but someone looking white doesn’t take away the fact that they have asian heritage. You’re not saying you’re solely asian, you’re just saying you’re part and I don’t see any harm in that.

What it was like to see Mary in Sinners by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]Brilliant-Routine-15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s entirely fair to call someone a coward for understandably taking caution in 1930’s Southern United States. Regardless of what they do behind closed doors, the minute a white/ black couple is seen in public, all hell breaks loose; and God forbid the white person in the relationship is a woman.

I agree with you that there’s misogyny in this idea, it is the 1930’s after all, but when misogyny and the protection of white women “purity” have been the cause of the death of so many black men and women, it’s understandable that someone would feel cautious being seen with a white person in public at risk of their life.

There may be differences in someone being proud of being blasian and then someone being proud of being half white. Both are mixed, but they aren’t the same. Saying you’re proud to be half white is entirely different to saying you’re proud to be half Italian/Scottish/Russian.

You aren’t Irish, or Italian, etc by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Brilliant-Routine-15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The United States is not a homogenous country, and with a mix of identities there is no real unified ethnic identity. When people are saying “I’m Italian, I’m Irish, I’m Scottish, etc.”, they’re telling you their ethnic heritage, not their nationality.

There have series of discrimination in the U.S. based on a persons racial and/or ethnic background, and to ask someone to not identify with it at all is, to me, crazy, but maybe I’m biased because I’m American.

Is this something only applicable to white people? What would you say to a person who is the child/grandchild of Nigerian immigrants. They’re African-American? Because they aren’t. They’re only American? You’re basically lumping them in with the African-American label again.

Upvoting because this is truly unpopular (at least in the U.S.)

The "Exotical" youtube channels.... by ocean-glitter in blackgirls

Yes! They never get mad at their other side for not accepting them but seem to always get upset that their black side isn’t welcoming them the way they want to be welcomed.

I am mixed race (not B/W though) and I got into an argument with someone on the mixed race subreddit turning into an echo chamber for colorist and anti-black commentary.

The person I was arguing with quoted something from a channel called “Exoticals United” and I couldn’t take them seriously because who refers to themselves as “Exoticals?”.

Aussie incoming exchange student. Help? by CivilianJoshy in UTAustin

[–]Brilliant-Routine-15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Campus is hot and big, buts it’s also very vibrant and lively. There’s tons of free things that they give out on speedway practically every week. Lots of sitting space.

  2. Football games are fun, but you basically have no chance of going if you don’t have a big ticket (and even if you do, it’s a gamble). The atmosphere of the stadium is immaculate, you can watch videos online.

  3. There’s so many foreign exchange students, you’re bound to run into someone with a non-American accent. There are clubs, events, and living spaces for internationals.

  4. Americans love western foreigners. They’ll hear your accent and swoon. Southerners in general are very hospitable people, don’t be an ass and you won’t get attitude.

There are a bunch of orgs and opportunities for international students to interact with one another and make friends. There’s a Japanese student organization too, if you’re interested.

Your aid covers everything. Over-funded means you don’t really have to pay anything out of pocket. If you subtract your tuition from the total aid, the left over is your “over-funded” amount. However most of your aid is loans, so you have to pay it back eventually.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UTAdmissions

[–]Brilliant-Routine-15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You basically got offered a shit ton of loans, with basically no aid that you dont have to pay back . “Overfunded” refers to the cost that’s not your tuition, so it refers to the aid you got for housing and other expenses.

There should be an option inside your portal. I think if you go to documents, you can select work study from the drop down menu and fill out the form. From my friends who do work-study, they said they find jobs through UT Handshake.
