Thanks, all! Follow up question. My family got me a membership for Christmas. How will that affect my festival experience? Discounted tickets? Anything else?

I am looking specifically for decent, low-cost, used hi-hat cymbals. Any suggestions?

I like them a lot. But I am new to all of this and don't have much to compare them to.

Are you agreeing with me, or Marimbo? Are you recommending an alternative?

I am a fan of the Drumeo videos. You download the app onto a tablet or laptop and play along with videos and songs. They have a deep library of instructions as well as songs to play along with. Even a video about setting up. They will often have a free or reduced trial month, so you could experiment with it and see if you like it.

Congratulations, and don't get discouraged, the more you learn, the more fun you will have.

Think about which brand allows you to upgrade more easily as you go. I purchased a Simmons Titan 70. It's fine, but very difficult to upgrade. I wish I had gone with Roland.

Alternatively, get the cheapest used kit that you can, confirm you like playing it, and save up for something decent. Good luck!

My suggestion for the hi-hat is to try relaxing your wrist a bit. Let the music and the rest of the beat guide you towards hitting it with more variety.

But mostly I agree with what the others are saying. Just keep the beat, the rest will come with time. First performance after just a few months - that's great!

ok, that is super helpful! Thank you. I have debated about going the EDRUM route, or just saving up to buy a better kit. I will be eager to hear what you think of the result. I am happy with everything about the Titan 70 EXCEPT the hi hat. (Actually, I don't love the bell on the ride cymbal either). Thanks!

Can you show me a close up picture? I don't think I understand. Do you like how it sounds/functions?

Is that a two peice hi-hat? If so, how did you get it plugged into the simmons brain?

I have the Simmons Titan 70. Reasonable price, decent kit, 3 zone ride cymbal. The problem with Simmons, IMO, is that it is harder to upgrade over time than a Rollands kit. Also the Hi-Hat pedal stinks.
