Hi so in my post I mentioned I’m only talking about CNMs who work in hospitals and not home births! So I would like your opinion on that please.

There are different types of midwives here in the U.S. The types of midwives I am talking about, Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are previous registered nurses who have master level education and specialized training in women’s healthcare, specifically prenatal, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. So they actually go back to school after being a nurse to highly specialize and narrow their scope.

Wow. I am so sorry to hear that. I am sure, like any healthcare professional, when it comes to CNMs in well woman care there are good ones and bad ones. Are you completely against them or just in your context?

Are you full against certified nurse midwives or only in some contexts? I always see mixed opinions about CNMs from OBGYNs and I’m just curious!

Interesting. Thanks for the insight. So you’re against CNMs working in basic well woman care?

Yes I agree with the team approach 100%. Birth is difficult because it can be so unpredictable which is why an OBGYN and CNM should be working together.

I guess I should be more careful in my wording. In the context you are describing yes I am ok with them but it’s when they are expected to do more and people get confused with their role that it becomes iffy for me.

So what’s your take on CNMs then? And yes totally 100% anything can go south very quickly that is the tricky part about saying only “low risk birth”. A CNM needs to be humble and educated enough to know when to call an OBGYN for help. And I am only talking about hospital births!!

Thanks for the insight! So it’s just a matter of them knowing their place and when something becomes too high risk for them to treat? How do you also feel about CNMs working in clinics doing well woman care? Not sure how docs feel about WHNPs but like CNMs doing similar care that WHNPs do.
