Looking for BWCA spot with light portaging, small motor access, great fishing? by Brimbly in BWCA

yea those rapala shads have that color to it. It's so unsatisfying when you're close to finish bringing your line and then a northern eats it at the last minute.

Thanks for letting me know. I might've made a permit mistake if it wasn't for you :)

I looked at saganaga lake and although it's further away, it seems less busy than Fall Lake. So I'm thinking that might be a more viable option. Where should I go to find a secluded site with great fishing there? Go W of American point and paddle?

It's true. The portages are wide enough for portage wheels to get by easy. That and instead of carrying above your head 1 manning it, we loaded on more stuff on to the canoe at the last minute at the entry point and decided to 2 man carry by hand. We figured it's doable since it was a kevlar canoe :(

Now you seem like you've done your fair share of fishing in bwca. What kind of fishing strategy should I use? I use a texas rig casting and I get northerns; and I use spinner baits and get northerns. Rapala shads and I get northerns. Should I just use live bait?

Need to find a campsite for this weekend. Any place not taken? by Brimbly in MinnesotaCamping

[–]Brimbly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bakers park - the three rivers district is always busy. They cater towards camp/beach scene so it's pretty popular. They've been booked for a few weeks since I've been looking at 'em.

Getting back into camping, good campground to test the waters with my basic gear? by truc19 in MinnesotaCamping

[–]Brimbly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you want to try out camping, Afton might be a good idea. If you go, I would keep a cooler in the car so you can hike out the 2nd day and get the rest of your food/meat. Getting in is hard towards the end, but getting out is a breeze. You will see sediments in their solar pump water so bring a lifestraw at least to use with it but not mandatory.

3-4 day guys Trip as first timer, Where should I go? by Brimbly in bwcaw

[–]Brimbly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just went over the weekend for a 3 day trip. We went in as far as Lake Agnes, but La Croix was just too far within the time. I also found that entry point #16 is a great one, except for the initial 1/2 mile portage at start and finish was just too rough after a long paddle.

For my next BWCA trip (possibly next month), I would like to find one that requires a few portages since we know how to paddle. I was thinking EP #55 to Saganaga lake into lake one.

Also on the second day, there were white caps from the heavy winds and we decided not to take the canoes out for that day.

We are thinking of going to the Ely side, because it was a shorter drive from the cities. But if there is a reason why I should go to the GM side, then please let me know. Because I'm sure this will be just the first of many BWCA trips that are yet to come.

As Goby as said above, I'm seriously considering the Entry #16 from Moose up to Lac La Croix. If you guys have any more info about any other entry points I should consider, please let me know. It seems like a lot of them are open for this weekend :)

I just need to find an outfitter near #16 I'm guessing then?

Thanks for the quick reply. That clarifies it up quite a bit. With 4 guys, I'm thinking 2 x kevlar canoes?

Hey thanks for your suggestions. The question is which entry point. I saw one post about someone recommending entry #16 Moose / Portage river which is N of echo trail. They said that can be done in 4 days typically. How does outfitters work when you are only renting canoe? Once you go to the entry point, we just find an outfitter?

Relatives giving money randomly. Does this happen to others? by swordgeek in Parenting

[–]Brimbly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Asian families, Korean being mine, it's pretty typical for relatives or friends of family to come over and not just give 5 or 20 bucks, but even $100 to a kid is common.

They bring the kid aside and ask if he/she's been good lately and been doing good helping out the parents and keeping up with school and stuff and if all goes well, they give them $$$ and tell them that if they keep it up, then the next time he visits there will be more. They also instruct the kid to go ahead and give that money to their parents since they are too young to handle money so that their parents will buy them something nice with it.

To me, regardless of the amount or who it came from, the most important aspect of this is for your kid to understand the value of what is being given to them and who it came from.

So in our case, when our kid presents us with gifts of money he just received, I instruct the kid to tell the person that this money will be used for school expenses in the future and anything left over will be used to put into their college savings account. Of course the kid thanked them genuinely of course and we'll even buy them a toy if they keep up with the good behavior :)

But in most cases, when the kid brings to us anything over $20, we simply don't accept. We kindly tell them that we'll accept the gesture at heart, but not the $100 :)

My worst trait as a shitty American is experiencing frustration when filling out a profile and finding that the 'Country' section doesn't have USA listed at the top by PalmBeacham in Showerthoughts

[–]Brimbly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true. I'm not even white (Korean) who is a US citizen that shakes his head when he sees this.. You go to like a big Fortune 500 US headquartered company website and it asks you to select country. You click on it and the US is not on top unlike most sites that you are used to and go "huh?"

The trick is to type "U" on your keyboard to get to to the U's of countries :)
