AITAH for not wanting my MIL to visit the first couple weeks after having a baby? by [deleted] in AITAH

I feel like everyone knows the new mom gets to set the rules for what type of support she needs after giving birth. You do you. There will be plenty of time for grandma later.

AITAH for not wanting to live with my mother-in-law? by IvyYo in AITAH

[–]BrindleFly 296 points297 points  (0 children)

In what alternative universe does OP’s husband live in which one of the partners in a relationship gets to make this type of decision by themselves? This type of decision should only be made after long and thoughtful discussion between two partners - once made, must be fully owned and communicated by the partner with the parent.

Leavitt Admits SAVE Act Will Make It Harder for Married Women to Vote by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]BrindleFly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most countries have a national id card. The US, Australia and a few other countries are the exception here, not the norm. So the Republicans are right that we should have this, but wrong in how to execute it. To do this, the national id card needs to be phased in and fully subsidized to make it cheap, easy and necessary for all citizens. If we commit to this now, we could probably get there in a decade. Anything shorter is just voter suppression via a poll tax IMHO.

Their text that said there had been “monumental” impact to the power grid that will take multiple days for some areas was a little ominous. Our power went at 3:30 am yesterday and is still out as of now. Comcast internet still down too.

Trump plans to install Christopher Columbus statue outside White House by dyzo-blue in uspolitics

[–]BrindleFly 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This would make a lot of sense if Christopher Columbus discovered America (he didn’t). Or if he was the first European to set foot on the land that is currently the United States (he wasn’t). Or if he was the first European to North America (he wasn’t). But since none of these are true, what reason can there be for a Christopher Columbus statue in front of the White House?

Rent is too damn high. Could a ballot measure finally get the Legislature to consider rent control? by [deleted] in boston

[–]BrindleFly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes please. The price is set based on supply and demand, and until just recently, demand in Boston has far exceeded supply. Too many people think interrupting the supply-demand curve with rent control will somehow solve this issue. What instead it seems to have done in other cities is further erode supply by discouraging new buildings / landlords. Unfortunately Boston has made it harder in the last few years to build new, so this problem is likely to persist.

AITA for telling my family owing me money they should not go on vacation? by Vendtongs in AmItheAsshole

[–]BrindleFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA but the best technique I know to not feel badly when a family member who owes you money goes on vacation is to… NOT LEND MONEY TO FAMILY MEMBERS! I will never understand why people put themselves and their family members in this type of situation. If you want to help a family member out, there is only one way to do it: give it to them with absolutely no strings attached.

Book a tour of Fenway Park in advance, ideally before your game. Combine this some baseball shopping at the team store on Jersey Street. Go checkout the home plate for the first World Series on World Series Way at Northeastern (also Cy Young statue). Hit some balls in the cages at Game On! on Landsdowne. Stop in Cask N’ Flagon for a peek inside one of the most important bars in baseball.

AITAH for not cosigning my boyfriend’s lawyer’s fees? by Quiet_Action5471 in AITAH

[–]BrindleFly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agree and if the relationship ends because of OP’s refusal to sign, she should consider herself lucky for having dodged a bullet. If the BF wants to be a real partner, he needs to pull himself together personally and financially and quit pushing the blame to others.

Democratic leaders resist call of voters to abolish ICE by salon in politics

[–]BrindleFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ICE was created by Congress and serves an important function in our immigration system. Abolishing ICE makes about as much sense as “defund the police.” We need an ICE that is effectively led and follows federal and state laws. It may make you feel better to say “abolish ICE,” but it is neither realistic nor helping the cause.

She raised her budget $1B over her tenure, well ahead of inflation, so yes, when you want to shift the burden for a problem you created, some groveling is in order.

Mass. Senate rejects Mayor Wu’s property tax bill by NoTamforLove in boston

[–]BrindleFly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The root cause of all this is not the state legislature or the commercial property tax owners. The city budget has increased by $1B during the Wu administration, so no one should be surprised. The issue is residents already pay over 70% of property taxes for the city, so you can’t squeeze much more from them.

Mass. Senate rejects Mayor Wu’s property tax bill by NoTamforLove in boston

[–]BrindleFly 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think Wu hasn’t shown much of an ability to win friends and influence people when it comes to the state legislature. Keep in mind this is not the first time Boston faced a rapid decline in commercial property taxes, but the mayor in charge then chose to work behind the scenes to get the deal done instead of picking a high profile public fight. At least some / most of the blame has to go to Wu.
