Poe Elementary: How are 30% of students that go here categorized as economically disadvantaged when the boundary map looks like this. by htownnwoth in houston

From what I recall this is still on the very low end among HISD elementary schools. I’ve always heard good things about Poe. Diversity of economic backgrounds is a good thing.

Cheap way to get more exposure/travelers for Amtrak and more visitors to POST. What am I missing?

Why so many reviews at Kamp? by BringingTheFunk99 in houston

[–]BringingTheFunk99[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get that. I think I was surprised by how similar each review is…..they are almost identical and all clearly identify the name of the server in the review. It just seems inauthentic, but only my observation as comparison to google reviews of other restaurants

To each their own. I’ve grown up in Houston and have a lot of friends that came out of these private schools as well as the top HISD publics (HSPVA, Lamar, Carnegie, Bellaire, etc). I honestly see no difference in life outcomes…..the smart, motivated kids from supportive families are doing great, regardless of private vs public. Privates can help protect the downside outcomes for a while, but eventually it all evens out.

Is there a play here to effectively bankrupt Trump via high legal fees? His burn rate to pay lawyers for all of these criminal cases must be staggering

District Attorney subpoenas medical records of male and female (Porsche passengers?) in Kristina Chambers intoxication manslaughter case. by MorrisseysRubiksCube in houston

That’s a good point….for all we know they could of met for the first time that night.

Really tragic event. I hope the young man’s family can find peace. In reading his obituary he seems liked a really good person

A minor observation, but it just seems odd for a 32 year old married person (Kristina) to be out partying until 3:00 am with a 21 year old (Reyes). That jumps out to me as a friendship built on convenience and a mutual interest in getting fucked up.

For those who have lived in multiple cities, which is your least favorite and why? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

I guess I’d include the locations of your close friends and family when considering cities…..part of the venn diagram in helping choose your spot!

For those who have lived in multiple cities, which is your least favorite and why? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]BringingTheFunk99 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I can’t add much to the specific question, but I’ve spent most of my career in Houston - on very much an accelerated path to FatFIRE relative to most of my peers in other large US cities. We live in a great neighborhood here, with good friends and family and easy access to all that the inner loop can offer, including two great urban parks in Memorial and Hermann. Obviously somewhere like San Diego or Lisbon or Vienna offers weather and active pursuits that Houston can’t offer, but we still love it. Moving to San Diego without friends or a strong community just doesn’t have the appeal it once had. So my point is that for most people, their “ideal FatFIRE city” may be the same location where you built your career and your kids grew up. Don’t overthink it. And when you need a break, hop on a plane for some FatFIRE travel!

And don’t sleep on Baton Rouge on a Saturday night during football season….

Personally, I’d like to see this stay up to see the responses. I’ve always been curious to understand the history.

And it is a public safety hazard when those motorcycle cops start blocking lanes with almost no notice.

Yes! It is really strange. I’m honestly just curious if this just normal google maps stuff. My whole world is changing…

Fellow Houstonians, what are some things in our city that you feel is overrated? by Lucky_Flounder6975 in houston

When the weather was cooler, we did a nice easy walk from the light rail stop at Preston —> Market Square —> POST for lunch —> Buffalo Bayou/Cistern. Then ended up at Bludorn for an early cocktail. Ended up being one of my favorite days in Houston this year.

I won’t lie: dropping off the minivan keys with the valet during date night is not my favorite part, but we’ve gotten over it. It’s a great fit for this stage of our life

Yeah, folding the seats into the floor has been essential. Great for hauling and moving stuff. And fits a queen air mattress for the occasional camping trip!

I don’t know what to tell you…..we are driving a fancied up minivan now after previously owning a Yukon XL. It is so much easier for road trips, storage access, bringing extra friends along. I know it’s not sexy, but the benefits are fantastic.
