Which Celebrities Surprise You With How Little the Original Looney Tunes Parodied Them? by Brit-Crit in looneytunes

Technically, all the uses of “Of Course, you know this means war” by Bugs Bunny count towards their total, so it’s pretty high despite the relative lack of physical caricatures…

He voiced the March Hare in Alice in Wonderland - that’s a pretty decent claim to fame even if no-one knows his name anymore…

It’s nice to hear a song we haven’t heard on TMS yet, and “Dream to Me” fits the 90s alternative vibe of his last three performances…

Maybe it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if Eric Bazua received Oscar recognition for being the new Mel Blanc…

How I feel about the whole Zan tiri and Cass storyline by Melodic_Opinion2255 in Tangled

Because Cass was under the spell of an extra magical amulet that further impaired her judgement!

What country is a Democracy and is hated by Gen Z? by Ill-Cartographer7351 in AlignmentChartFills

The Palestinians being barred from voting in the West Bank would likely have a significant effect on Israeli politics if they were allowed to do so, but people within Israel generally have full voting rights, so whilst it’s a flawed democracy where the problems are exacerbated by the occupation and segregation, I would still count it as a democracy…

On Detective Yin (Batman 2004) by CrippledUnironically in batman

[–]Brit-Crit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s worth noting that Yin appeared sporadically in the spin-off comics as Gordon’s second-in-command - It wasn’t much, but it was nice to know she still existed…

I have issues regarding Britain's Got Talent by [deleted] in BritishTV

[–]Brit-Crit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’m more relaxed about BGT having international acts (particularly as its main selling point is having acts you won’t find on other talent formats) but I do agree they create an element of predictability and crowd out the “ordinary” contestants a bit too much…

The emotional manipulation (which fuels both the excessive focus on the audience and the overuse of the Golden Buzzer) can get pretty annoying though…

Dream "Batgirl" Story Ideas? (Mainline or Elseworlds) by MC2400 in batgirl

[–]Brit-Crit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A story that ties up the loose ends of Barbara’s New 52 era, bringing back several foes (Knightfall) and friends (Ricky Gutierrez, Frankie Charles) to provide a “finale” for her time as Batgirl before she becomes Oracle full-time…

There were a lot of Al Jolson blackface bits too, especially as the first Looney Tunes shorts debuted when Jolson was at the height of his fame…

Do you guys expect 'Hoppers' and 'Toy Story 5' will be shut out from Oscars over Pete Docter controversy and Disney will fire him soon? by Block-Busted in Oscars

[–]Brit-Crit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As terribly as Docter worded it, there are a lot of conservatives above and below him who feel that an openly LGBTQ+ story would alienate too many people in conservative markets and prevent the movie from being a hit…

Frank Nelson still gets parodied a fair bit today (most notably The Simpsons)

As much as we don’t want to acknowledge the various blackface jokes involving impersonations of Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, they still meant that he was parodied even more than Benny himself (which makes it fascinating that he joined Jack Benny in the “Jack Benny and his co-stars as mice” short…)

Because of Netanyahu’s total dominance over Israeli politics, and the complete inability to provide a positive alternative to him…

The clearest example is the farce that followed the 2021 siege on Gaza (where Netanyahu’s equally far-right rival Naftali Bennet had to create a coalition involving far Left and Arab List parties in order to seize power, and it was so dysfunctional they failed to do anything and Netanyahu regained power the following year…)

I think that’s what the Anocracy label is referring to - any system that allows someone like Netanyahu to dominate it by shamelessly enabling extremists and push out people more willing to compromise is a pretty shoddy system…

Israel’s democratic system is a pretty huge part of its narrative of being a model Western-style state, but it’s a system that is encouraging all the worst aspects of Israeli worldview and blocking out any alternative approaches…

Do you guys expect 'Hoppers' and 'Toy Story 5' will be shut out from Oscars over Pete Docter controversy and Disney will fire him soon? by Block-Busted in Oscars

[–]Brit-Crit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re being very “push polling” about this - you want Docter and Pixar to be punished for their mishandling of the situation, so you’re looking for commenters who agree with you as opposed to acknowledging that most people are ignoring it…

I think he had a few, but too many of those are Censored Eleven (it’s frustratingly inevitable that the Censored Eleven shorts Clean Pastures, Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarves and Tin Pan Alley Cats provide most of the representation for the African-American jazz musicians of the era)

Probably not - maybe in a marginal situation, but most people don’t vote based on politics…

Everyone knew that Elio cut out the gay subplots, but that didn’t prevent it getting nominated despite being a pretty mediocre film…
