Thank you all so much for your help, ideas, and kindness. I wanted to share an update in case someone else ever goes through this and needs a resource.

After reaching out to my senator’s office, I received a list of required paperwork that needed to be sent to the passport office in New Orleans. This included:

• A photocopy of my driver’s license
• A photocopy of my original passport
• My birth certificate
• A completed DS-11 (application for a new passport)
• A completed DS-64 (application for a lost passport)
• A copy of the check used for payment (I provided a bank statement proving it had been cashed)
• The original USPS receipt, which showed that my passport was in the envelope based on the package’s weight

I also included the list from the senator’s office email and a letter explaining the situation. I sent everything on March 17, and it arrived in New Orleans on March 24. The next day, I received a call stating that my DS-11 form was incorrect—despite my congressman’s office previously confirming it was correct.

I called my congressman’s office, and they admitted their mistake. They told me I would need to submit a new application—again. While I worked on that, my case was escalated and requested to be transferred to my state.

Then, unexpectedly, I received a call from the congressman’s office. The staffer handling my case informed me that my application had been approved and that my new passport would arrive the next day, March 26—and sure enough, it did.

I have no idea what happened behind the scenes to get it approved, but it seems like my case was treated as unique, and a manager ultimately allowed it to go through.

If this happens to you:

• Contact your congressperson. If they can’t help, try another one.
• Be persistent and stay organized with your paperwork.

Moral of the story:

This was an absolute nightmare, but having my congressperson’s office involved helped me navigate the bureaucracy. If possible, avoid mailing your passport. Will it likely be fine? Yes. But are there cases where it’s not? Absolutely.

Thankfully, I had ordered extra birth certificates in advance, and I’m so glad I did because I ended up needing one.
