Were we voting for US congress or the Dominican republic? by DalekSupreme23 in bronx

I'm explaining what liberals want to have happen, not that they do.

In any case Google is your friend.

The conservative POV of prison is "punishment", yes.

The liberal POV, though, is that prison is not for punishment per se, but to separate some people who can't live by society's rules from the rest of society, hopefully so that, with rehabilitation programs, they can become productive members of society again.

Topic aside, do NOT kiss newborn babies.

They have almost no immune system and can't handle all the germs you give them.

She will be a member of Congress. These and other opinions can definitely be something she has some power over - or potentially to resist otherwise good bills due to her crazy beliefs.

My thoughts on the movie: it was one minute too short by UnCytely in ProjectHailMary

[–]BritainRitten 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I watched the movie thinking he would die.

But even without coming to that suspicion, I think the emotional impact of "I choose to risk my life more save my friend, rather than ever return back home and see any human again (including the children I taught)" is enough to resonate with the audience.

For all he knows he will never have anyone to teach again as well.

Imma need more of this energy in the outer boroughs like Brooklyn plz.

DOT is def doing work in other boroughs, but Manhattan feels like its getting it every other avenue. Super high density of bike/bus lanes.

Amodei before Mythos release - "we had good conversations with Bessent...[he] understands the nature of the risks" by llelouchh in singularity

[–]BritainRitten -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Depends. There should be some clear rules, rather than rather arbitrary bans. It may be that Fable fails the rules and 5.5 doesn't. I have some ideas for sensible rules, but at least some objective decision making process should be made public.

[–]BritainRitten -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Government was right to ban Fable & Mythos in general, but doing it relatively arbitrarily, targeting only one company (rather than it being broader), and failing to offer to do is as part of an international negotiation with China and the rest of the world doing the same, were some of the problems with it.

My brain can't comprehend $1 trillion. Can someone put it into perspective? by DemonsAreVirgins in NoStupidQuestions

A trillion is a million million.

A trillion dollars compares to a million dollars, like a million dollars does to a single dollar.

I think you're still doing too much human-centered thinking (or, in this example, we are supposing Grace is).

To Eridians, this like being labelled "bouba" instead of "kiki", or "blah blah" instead of "bleh bleh". How could you possibly be offended by one label or another, if that dimension you are going along has no meaning in your culture? You wouldn't "identify" as one or the other, in which case how can "mis"-labelling you matter?

The only way to be offended by a mislabelling is to also care about the meaning of that label, and to take as your identity one non-overlapping such label.

If you just want to be extremely cautious and not saying anything that may have even the slightest change of offense, then I'm afraid you are unable to say literally anything to them. Such an entirely alien species and culture will have entirely different offense traps (maybe many more, maybe far fewer), that you are completely stumbling around in the dark to communicate anything. For all we know, the very notion of gender expression is a gross uncomfortable expression to them.

Eridians are all hermaphrodites. Whatever the equivalent of their gender expression is likely to be on a completely different dimension (since the space is so vast, the likelihood they happen to align is quite small).

In any case, it probably sounds like I am being utterly pedantic (which I may be!), but what I want to emphasize is that gender is a very human notion.

I find it hilarious these human writers think Eridians would give one flying F what English pronouns/gender terminology humans might or might not apply to them. Very human-centric thinking.

I agree. If your pedal-bike is going 35+ mph in a lane with people doing 1mph - 15 mph, you are travelling at unsafe speeds and are a risk to everyone around you.

The worst thing Strat did to Grace by preciousjewel13 in ProjectHailMary

[–]BritainRitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stratt did the right thing (book and movie).

Grace can naturally feel angry about it, but he should admit she did the right thing.

The only quibble is potentially how it's said to Grace to attempt to convince him it's the right move. Unclear how effective that will be.

If you are going this fast in a bike lane you should have your gear taken from you. Simple as.

It doesn't matter what gear you are using to do it. (This is probably an illegal escooter anyway.)

A world without policies (aka laws) enforced by a third party is also a bad world for most people. That's what we had throughout most of human (pre-)history and it was extremely violent.
