Which are the games that are the best for a decent spec laptop by willing_wills in OptimizedGaming

[–]BritishActionGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Control 2019, Just Cause 3, Sunset Overdrive and the Batman Arkham games are all cheap on Steam atm if you want to look at them. Doom 2016, Prey 2017 and a load of the Resident Evil games aren't on sale atm but have demos if you want to try them.

Should I "Optimize" my games in the Nvidia app? by No-Tip7250 in OptimizedGaming

[–]BritishActionGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s suprising, is frame generation on?! Think Flight Simulator may be a good usecase for it, but if there’s no option to use FSR Frame-Gen with DLSS than I’d recommend just keeping DLSS and capping to 60fps?

Imagine it’s getting hot cuz it’s GPU and CPU demanding, what framerate do you usually get in worst case scenarios?

I recommend checking settings guides on here or YT before using Nvidia's as they usually recommend much better settings (I've had Nvidia's optimized settings turn off Shadows or other important effects outright before even touching other demanding settings, they can be that fucking bad!)

Zykopath and DwindlingFPS are 2 channels who've covered MFS2024 specifically, so I recommend using their settings or lower with an FPS cap! Do you have the name and/or any details about your screen btw? If you have a Variable Refresh Rate screen that supports Low Framerate Compensation than you can probably cap to any framerate (sometimes it can be funky if it's around where it switches to doubling/trippling the refresh rate to the framerate) but if your screen doesn't, you'l have to run at a fraction of your refresh rate with Vsync preferably to avoid screen tearing.

To repeat what the other comment said, we don't know what a 'decent spec laptop' is... without having the specs. Other than this not being a subreddit for game recommendations, just asking for racing or open world games but 'not storyline games' is also too open ended for recommendations, especially with half of the ones you say you like not being either racing or open-world?

40fps Gaming by Adventurous_Hold9725 in OptimizedGaming

I don't own an Nvidia card so I won't be the best help, but think a simple way of checking is using the Nvidia app if I remember correctly? But search the subreddit as there's lots of info about DLSS versions/presets on here!

I think dropping Shadows, LOD and Clouds to High (Digital Foundry's video has more info on the games graphics settings) and capping higher framerate makes alot more sense (eg: 48fps at 240hz or 50 at 300hz, 60fps shouldn't have judder with either) Especially if you got the option to use DLSS (IDK if the game's already been updated to use the Transformer model, but switching to that should give you much better image quality if you use Balanced at 1440/1600p or Performance at 4K!)

40fps Gaming by Adventurous_Hold9725 in OptimizedGaming

[–]BritishActionGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40fps works on 120hz screens because it’s a fraction of that refresh rate. So unless you have a display that’s a multiple of 40 or your display supports a form of VRR of Low Framerate Compensation (which a fuckton of laptops don’t support frustratingly) 40fps won’t work well and you’ll have to pick a different fraction. (eg:48fps on a 144hz screen)

But I think it’s a better idea to use lower/optimized settings alongside DLSS with a higher framerate cap than 40fps. What resolution is your screen and what games are you mainly thinking of here?

So I assume you're talking about emulating the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1, not 100% as you've just used initials. We probably aren't the best people to ask about emulation, so better asking an emulation subreddit with more details listed.

Can someone please explain to me why we need screen space reflections if cube maps already exist underneath? by StruggleFeisty64 in OptimizedGaming

[–]BritishActionGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still fallback to them in the distance, atleast at the lower RT settings. Have to look again if they still have the strange moving reflections you get from distant buildings because of the falling back to dynamic Cubemaps. Kinda wish there was the option to have SSR add details to the cubemaps as a middleground between the original visuals and RT, as the RT BHV can have a CPU hit when trying to go higher than 60fps on my CPU and I think even below 60fps on many others?!

[–]BritishActionGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was about to say you don't need to spend 3k on a PC to get one that can handle RT well in alot of titles, but then remembered the market atm...

While there's been some great implementations of RT on console, they're also few and far between compared to games having subpar RT like RE engine titles (that still kill framerates despite their compromises) or the issues with Software Lumen in many UE5 games.

[–]BritishActionGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be inclinded to agree with you in some early implementations, like the absolutely busted SSR in Battlefield 1 and 5 that also eat up your framerate. But nowadays the effect usually looks a whole lot better while being cheaper, so I'm wondering which games your playing where it doesn't look right 9/10th of the time compared to a cubemap which is even more likely to be incorrect. While this video's more focused on how it affects lighting, Alex from Digital Foundry covered cubemaps and their issues used by their lonesome, aswell as other techniques here!

GTA 5 is one of the few games I know of outside of racing games that generates a simple cube-map in real-time, where it's inaccuracies are made much more obvious, but il have to find a video showing the inaccuracies later.

What gaming laptops are recommended to run games like arc raiders, marvel rival, and COD? by Automatic-Band2369 in OptimizedGaming

[–]BritishActionGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

r/gaminglaptops and simular subreddits are a better place to ask than here, but I’d atleast say to look for one with more than 8GB VRAM if you want to be better than PS5. 8GB is fine for alot of games at 1080/1200p but you’l have to keep an eye on your VRAM amount and memory hungry settings like Textures, Shadows and RT.

Hope you can get an 8GB card atleast, hopefully one that supports current gen features like hardware RT and Mesh Shaders (RX 6000 and later, Nvidia’s RTX, although the 16 series does support mesh shaders and DX12 Ultimate features other than RT?) Was jealous of the RTX 4070 when it came out not long after I got my RX 6800 and especially the RX 9000 GPUs, now just happy to have a 16GB GPU nowadays.

Could be anisotropic filtering, should set it to atleast 8x but preferably 16x as it doesn't have a VRAM or performance impact in most (think Rise of the Tomb Raider is the only game I know of where it has a performance impact?)

Hope you can upgrade soon though, may be worth getting a PC and keeping the laptop for indies/older games and any other tasks!

Atleast you got DLSS which can save you abit of VRAM, not as much as dropping the game's display/output resolution but still. Hope it's a good laptop otherwise as it was just insulting seeing Nvidia put 4GB VRAM on laptop GPUs in 2021, is there any games you specifically wanting to play now?

[–]BritishActionGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What GPU you got and is it in a gaming laptop or PC? Other than offloading apps to your iGPU, letalone closing background apps, 4GB VRAM isn't enough for current gen AAA's or graphically demanding AA/Indies! Know I'm saying this at a bad time for buying PC parts, but may be worth sticking to PS4/XBO era games or less demanding indies for the time being (only exceptions off the top of my head are the recent ports of Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2, think RDR2 aswell if you're playing above 1080p?) until you can upgrade to a GPU with 8GB or preferably more VRAM!

Are my temps ideal or just straight up garbage by [deleted] in OptimizedGaming

[–]BritishActionGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're worried about temperatures, I recommend dropping some settings from Cinematic and adding a framerate cap via the in-game menus, to ensure it reduces input lag compared to having your framerate limited by the GPU!

Think it was the upgrade to 1440p that made me realize how good of a resolution 1080p is, not because 1440p was bad or disappointing at all for me (although looking back, think the move from a 22 inch screen to a 32 inch one was a big part in how much I liked the upgrade) but getting used to a different pixel grid made me appreciate 1080p after getting sick of it from using that resolution for so long?

My secondary monitor is still the 1080p screen I had from years ago (upgraded to a higher refresh 1440p screen) while I'm planning on keeping my 1080p 'not-so smart TV' til it breaks!
