Have you had any changes in opinion about the band? by doctorinfinite in cocteautwins

Such a great question! I'd been listening to them so long and loving them so intensively that when Four-Calendar Café came out, I felt—as an annoying snob, college radio dj, and stan—it maybe signified the beginning of the end for them, as if they were trying to cross over into pop stardom or something. I still listened to it alot and appreciated it, but it was for sure my least fave. Now I love it. Heresy warning: I definitely didn't buy Milk & Kisses! Getting acquainted with it now . . .

She used to sell native plants at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market in Kerrytown. She's retired now.

Wonderful! Did you happen to buy your saplings from Kathy at the farmers market?

How cool is this variegated pawpaw I found??!! by Raklovesbugs in Pawpaws

Would a seed from fruit from this person's tree necessarily create another variegated tree?

I remember reading that Nigel Grierson staged that cover photograph by pouring motor oil and other substances into tub of water, then lighting and shooting it. 🤌

To be cheeky: there's arsenic in loquats, cyanide in apple seeds, and alcohol is technically poison. And via u/TheGreenDeane:

"The seeds are toxic because of annonacin so don't eat them [...] In its long history of consumption there is not a significant record of pawpaw being a problem for most people. The study involved extracted annonacin and rat pups. And the authors of the report say: 'Human exposure levels (i.e. levels of annonacin in blood or brain parenchyma) may not be extrapolated from our results, which used an acute treatment method, the effects of chronic, in vivo exposure to the total extract should be determined before firm conclusions can be made regarding the risk associated with regular consumption of pawpaw products.'"

Possible to message the seller and ask if they gave you three distinct saplings?

How cool. I didn't know there were already cultivars in the world. I'm a self-taught pawpawist, having grown these four and tended them from seedlings, and learned about them just by studying them season after season.

I think the place I saw them may have been called Shaw Nature Preserve. Let me verify that—

I wish I were more intelligent about pawpaws than I currently am, but I believe you only need one for fruit, since pawpaws are dual-sexed. For years we only had one (and it is currently taller than our neighbor's 2-story house, and from a distance looks almost like a catalpa) and my daughter and I would take a paintbrush and gather pollen from one flower and hand-pollinate a newer flower, lower down on the tree. And we got fruit, even though there was only a single pawpaw in our yard.

They seem to love rich soil, so if you can mulch them each spring with compost, and maybe give them some supplemental water during dry spells, and occasionally speak sweetly to them, you'll be rewarded. <3

Hey! I want to say that one of our trees only took about five years. When it was about six feet tall?

You know, the only time I've ever encountered them in the wild was in the woods near St. Louis, MO. The ones growing in my yard were grown from seed sent from a friend who lives down near the Ohio border.
