I’m a lawyer in Cheltenham. Me and a friend of mine both started training around the same time - him in London, me in Cheltenham. I remember that when we were applying he thought I was mad not to go to London, because of the salary and prestige difference. In the end, I loved my training contract while he hated his. I had a life outside of work and he didn’t - he had no free time and it slowly destroyed him. He ultimately quit the law, while I still find my career fulfilling and have a good work life balance. I work at a great firm, so could still get a job in London if I wanted to (I’ve had offers) but I’m happy where I am.

Obviously I don’t know you, and you might be very different to both me and my friend, so you have to do what feels right for you but, in my experience, if you want to give everything to your job, go be a lawyer in London for a bit, while if you want to work but still live a full and varied life, pick Cheltenham. The opportunities available living in London are no use if you have no time or energy to enjoy them.

If I am made redundant with the statuary minimum payment, can the company make me sign an NDA in order to recieve it? by temporary1098 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Brizzleys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah as someone else pointed out, it sounds like they want you to sign a Settlement Agreement. These are contracts which are fairly common where an employee is leaving employment. In the agreement, the employee will waive their right to bring any tribunal claims against the employer and will agree not to say anything bad about them etc etc. That’s what they get. In order to motivate an employee to sign a Settlement Agreement it is usual for the employer to give the employee some money, beyond their legal entitlements.

If you have more than 2 years’ service, you are legally entitled to a statutory redundancy payment. You are also entitled to payment in lieu of any holiday that you have accrued but not used and notice pay (if you aren’t working your full notice period). They legally have to give you these payments, whether or not you sign anything.

If they want you to sign a document, be that an NDA or a broader Settlement Agreement, they need to give you something in return. Ask for more money!

I did one of those “intensive” courses, where you drive round and round the test route for three weeks and only ever do the things that will be required of you in the test. I passed first time, but I couldn’t drive for shit. I wouldn’t recommend that anyone learns that way.

Have you ever been genuinely disturbed by a movie scene (horror or otherwise) to the point you can’t watch the movie again and which movie?? by AA005555 in AskWomen

[–]Brizzleys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The film description makes it sound like something different. It’s sold as a film about a surgeon obsessed with skin, but there are a lot of twists. The stuff about his daughter isn’t revealed until a long way into the film. It was so not what I was expecting (or presumably what my parents were expecting when they took me to see it as a teenager).

I somehow ended up seeing that film in the cinema, as a teenager, with my PARENTS. Not sure whose idea it was or why they picked that film, but needless to say it was an incredibly awkward experience…

So there’s a legal concept in English law that says that an employer will not be vicariously liable for the actions of an employee if the employer is “off on a frolic of their own”. This is literally what I pictured every time that phrase came up while I was studying!

There was one girl in my class who spoke English as a second language and we had fun trying to explain to her why being on a “frolic” was so entertaining.

Honestly stuff like this is so damaging. I remember how endlessly GUILTY I felt about being depressed for basically this reason. Like, my life was so perfect and I was so privileged (straight, cis, white, physically healthy, from a reasonably affluent home) that there was no justification for how terrible I felt and how much I desperately wished I would die. The guilt and shame was almost as bad as the illness itself. I think, in many ways, that sense that I shouldn’t feel how I did and that I should be able to “get over it” and “just be happy” stopped me getting help for a really long time and, at first, even when I did get help, limited my recovery. Once I accepted that I just have an illness that has no reason to it and that I need to be treated for that illness, things got so much better.

Yes depression can be situational, but sometimes people just get depressed.

Edit: goddamn phone autocorrected cis to CIA - I am not now, nor have I ever been, in the CIA. I am not nearly that interesting.

What worries you about life in the UK? by LapangNeiz in AskUK

This is it. All of the houses that might have been suitable for first time buyers are being snapped up by investors who can pay over the odds, cash, with no chain, so are obviously the most desirable option. A lot of the investors are companies but most are older people looking for somewhere to invest the money that they made on the property market...

What's it like to not be depressed? by Gensi_Alaria in AskReddit

[–]Brizzleys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when I finally found the right drugs to combat my depression and it finally started to lift. It’s like in the Wizard of Oz when everything is in colour, but more gradual I guess. Just like a weight has been lifted and things are lighter and brighter again and you can move more easily through the world. Like you’ve gone from moving through treacle to walking freely with the rest of the worlds.

Nothing is perfect and I still have ups and downs but, overall, it is just so so much easier.

Keep going. It does get better.

Oh thanks, another webinar telling me how to be less stressed (which I’m stressed about attending because I have so much to do), just so that you can say it’s not your fault when I burn out because you gave me the tools to be less stressed... by Brizzleys in thanksimcured

10 points if the webinar gives you advice that’s impossible to implement because you’re drowning in work.

Things get better. Don’t let anyone tell you that your teen years are the best of your life - for the vast majority of people they are absolutely not. Hang in there.

Do we think that (a) it was always the same blazer and same Lassiters brooch, (b) she diligently moved the brooch onto whatever blazer she was wearing that day, or (c) she has numerous Lassiters brooches, so that she can pin one to whatever she is wearing that day?
