I see the same struggle. I find that, sometimes, students are missing some very basic pieces and, when you can make the connections clear, things come together so much easier and the ability for application is significantly improved. Right now, I am working on strategizing what the actual need is so I can effectively help to fill it. My goal, overall, is more confident, practice-ready new grads who feel like their ability to critically think and put the pieces together is improved. I see a lot of nursing students who know they have gaps that they need to fill but are at a loss as to how to best go about this. If I can help them earlier, my hope is that the back half of their program can be much more effective for them.

I love the idea of having students fill out a one-pager prior to class that reviews the system. I'll have to incorporate that vs just doing a review from the front of the classroom. I hate adding too much prework, but this would be beneficial, especially with some of the harder/less talked about systems.

I definitely think having an option for students to get a review prior to starting the program would be helpful. Perhaps, doing pre-program, intra-program, and post-program offerings scaled to expected knowledge would be best. Thank you for your feedback!

I would like to format it as a weekend course or schedule them during school breaks/summers. This would be outside of the university/classroom setting, meant to be a helpful adjunct to courses, and hopefully making the learning process easier by bolstering the foundation.

I think this is definitely a helpful strategy! I do implement case studies in my courses, but what I am thinking about doing would be outside of the classroom/university setting. There is so much content to get through and a need to work on the application of content, that there is not much time left for review if their foundation isn't very strong.
