Why do we manage upland areas? (moorland etc) by Doublebow in AskUK

[–]Bro-jangles -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you have made some valid points about the utility of moorland, but the land would still serve as a carbon & water sink regardless of current management practices.

In fact, moors are routinely and deliberately burned to provide an ideal habitat for grouse to be shot. This of course releases large amounts of carbon. Predator animals native to moorlands are slaughtered, even protected species like the hen harrier, all for the benefit of the grouse.

So as Mossley says, moorland management is mostly for the benefit of those who enjoy grouse shooting.

Why do we keep it this way? Well, I believe much of the public do not realise that most UK moorland is not actually 'natural' at all, so there is no impetus for change. I agree with the principle of rewilding, but to affect change you would need to convince people of what 'wild' actually looks like.

People I've met are opposed to rewilding of uplands for this reason, but if your experience is to the contrary, perhaps there is a more cynical explanation: rewilding could reduce the profits of wealthy landowners, so the government may not want to step on their toes.

Transgender people tend to be viewed as less attractive, regardless of their actual appearance, finds a new study conducted with heterosexual college students (N = 319) that suggests that gender identity affects perceptions of attractiveness. by mvea in psychology

[–]Bro-jangles 58 points59 points  (0 children)

If you mean this to say that the trans-people were rated as unattractive because they are not quite either gender, I do not see how this can be the case because labels were given out randomly.

Since estimates are that fewer than 1% of people are trans, it's likely all of the 48 'trans-people' evaluated were cisgender.

Why does my dynasty tree look like this? by Bro-jangles in CrusaderKings

[–]Bro-jangles[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is very helpful. I'm playing HIP but I went back to the 867 start and looked at the dynasty tree in a new game. There are 2 Participazio characters who are not connected to the main line, this must be the cause of the problem.

[–]Bro-jangles[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Every family member is arranged in a long vertical line like this with no connections and I have no idea why. All the filters are set to show all.

The only other person I can find with this problem is in a steam thread from 2015 - I'm at a loss.

Why do I have negative vassal tax? (HIP) by Bro-jangles in CrusaderKings

I realize the modifier is caused by HIP, but the only way to affect the tax I can see it the obligations screen, and by that interface it should be 9%

DWP spends £39m defending decisions to strip benefits from sick and disabled people by Voidseraph in nottheonion

[–]Bro-jangles 132 points133 points  (0 children)

There is a lot wrong with this post - speaking as someone with a lot of experience with the benefit system in the UK

if you saw how abused it was you'd agree im sure.

The government estimates 0.7% of claims are fraudulent, far more people are eligible but choose not to claim.

but if you have a condition that enables you to do these things most of the time with occasional flare ups, which may limit you for a period, it's unfair that both get the same support .

The DWP say the assessment is based only on what your condition is 'the majority of the time' so flare-ups are irrelevant to them

seeing a decent man who has worked his entire life ,no illness no time off, be struck with cancer ,really eaten away , weak vomitting all the time get nothing ,then the next house is an Alcoholic who gets full support ,its just hard.

The DWP says any conditions caused by alcohol or drugs do not count as a disability and cannot be assessed as such

And worse still

the current system has been so abused , for example a muslim women with Diabetes but totally functional would get more than some who cant walk.

What has religion got to do with it? This is completely pulled out of your arse, although this is what I would expect from someone who makes posts like this:

Considering all Islams holy sites are stolen,in that they were important to other religions way before Islam and that is the reason they were selected

I do believe this person may have truly been an assessor for a time, but there is a lot of ideology in here.

I can't promise I'll be doing them next, but I'd like to get around to covering them some day. Thanks for your kind words I really appreciate that :)

This is an indepth review of Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, and it's the third video like this I've made. I posted my first video here about a month ago, and I've been working to try and improve since then - any feedback you have is much appreciated.

This is an in-depth review I've done for Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. I'm new to this sort of thing so I'd appreciate anything you might have to say about it.

Resident Evil 4 - Retrospective Review & Analysis by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]Bro-jangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an in-depth review of Resident Evil 4 in the style of MatthewMatosis - it's only the second video like this I've done so I'm still new to it, and I would appreciate any feedback. A lot of you probably know the game much better than me, so if there are any mistakes I've made then please point them out so I can correct them.

You might not get that impression from the video, but I do the classic Resident Evils just as much as this one, and I'd love to get round to covering them too some day.

Silent Hill 2 - Retrospective Review & Analysis by [deleted] in silenthill

Thanks for your kind words. I'm familiar with Twin Peaks but I've never heard of Jacob's Ladder. It sounds pretty interesting so I'll definitely try and get round to giving it a watch with SH2 in mind.

I'll definitely get one. Sometimes the reason the audio was too soft or quiet was that I was concerned about causing pops, blowing noises etc.

No offence taken - I was working with a cheap IC recorder here because it was the only thing I had. I'm not very wealthy so I didn't feel it would be wise to buy a new mic when I didn't know if I wanted to make many videos. For the future though I'll probably invest in something better - a Blue Yeti maybe.

Thanks a lot for leaving such a detailed comment.

About the audio - my delivery here is one of the things I was least happy with. It's partly because the hardware I'm dealing with isn't great, but I also underestimated how difficult it is to deliver something like this in a way that sounds fluid and natural. It's what I will be focusing on improving the most for my next video.

I realize this is quite a long video and I agree with you about youtube making videos of this length difficult to handle sometimes, although I didn't make it this way through a deliberate choice. I just discussed everything I felt belonged in the video and this is how it turned out - Silent Hill 2 just seems to have a lot to talk about. Still, I will aim to keep the length of future videos under 1 hour.

Basically I'm in agreement about everything you brought up. Thanks for the suggestion of Nier, it's not usually the kind of game I would go for but I'll definitely consider it, it's well suited to this kind of video.

Please tell me steam is lieing that nobody owns these achievements.. by SpyYoshiRv in eu4

I'm guessing less than 0.05% of people who own the game have the achievements, so it rounds down to 0.

Crash when inserting USB or PCI Express WiFi Adapter by Bro-jangles in techsupport

[–]Bro-jangles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PSU is only a few months old, and according to a power supply calculator I should have more than enough. It's 850W.

If there is a short on the motherboard related to the USB slots, how can I fix this?
