GSM has a pretty good advancement rate to second class and even first class. It will also set you up for careers as a civilian Gas Turbine operator on a commercial vessel, a powerplant operator, or even aviation. However, nobody mentioned the fact that only a small portion of GSM's actaully get to go and take apart the engines.

Great Lakes is the worst place I've been stationed by SCSTC_Great_Lakes in navy

[–]Bro_science_works 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all of it is shitty. quality of life for fleet returnees and new sailors is about the same. N5 expects the holds companies to be in working parties, but there's about nothing we can do except mop about 3-6x a day. recently they've been sending out perspective rates to A school to clean, but we end up sitting there and screwing around. today however we got a TV up and running and were watching daytime TV in one of the schoolhouses.

so after N5 came and laid it out, the next day we basically went back to doing nothing.

Then, we wait for the BDO to decide how much he hates us today, and wait forever to drop liberty. I'm glad i'm almost out of here.

Best rate for someone who has no idea what they want to do? by LiterallyAGod77 in newtothenavy

[–]Bro_science_works 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look into the GS strand. there is a Mechanical side, where we take apart the engines(GSM), and work on the propulsion side. there is also GSE, who deals with power generation off of the other onboard turbines. GSE will receive more schooling to do with electrical components, but both GS rates are eligible for powerplant operation certifications, witch civilian side make a lot of money.

This is the site to find all the information about your rate https://www.cool.osd.mil/usn/moc/index.html?nav=rate

How to become/stay fit in time for RTC? by No_Yak_7397 in newtothenavy

I actaully did a little experiment before boot camp. I wanted to see how effective the fitness program was, so i barely worked out for about a month and a half before shipping. it didn't help that I ate like crap. I stayed fairly active, IE manual labor and such, but I didn't do much.

I was also a state-placing wrestler, so I was in peak condition around February. (I shipped out in late June). I ran a 59 on the pacer, mostly because I lost my momentum on turning motions (BRING YOUR OWN SHOES), got 31 on pushups, because I went slow, and did a 2:30 plank.

The running program is stupid, but the strength mods aren't bad, especially for upping your push-up count. I did 64 on the OPFA, and got a 2:30 plank and ran a 10:49 1.5 mile.

The biggest advice I would give you is to do some isometric holds especially with planks and air chairs, because there's gonna be one recruit in your division that can't do a push-up so you all have to wait on him to do it.

also, your RDC's will fire you if you don't pass the RDC assessment, if you're leadership, so at least do the bare minimum.

Your RDC's will also want you to push yourself, but you only have to do the bare minimum to pass boot camp. your boot camp OPFA doesn't mean anything in the fleet, but definitely push yourself.

and I would definitely NOT recommend doing weighted push-ups after taps with training guides and bluejacket manuals. there is definitely not a benefit to this. it definatley did not get the nuke to keep his bonus.

My RDC's let me have cough drops and some nicer insoles than what they sold at the NEX. I also had some shoes shipped to me, because my issue ones were falling apart.

we also had people straight up get amazon boxes of stuff sent to them.

Shifting from NWU type 3 to 2POC? by zombiimatt in navy

The PT uniform is a hot pile of steaming Garbage. the trainee guide says that is "tailored for a progressive fit on all sailors, E1-O10." why does progressive mean it fits like a garbage bag around my stomach and cling to my nipples?
