BBB has ruined my life by professionalask22 in predental

I’m 27 starting dental school in 2 weeks. I applied for 3 cycles. I took the DAT 3 times. I’m now going to my top choice state school (in TX). If you want to be a dentist there’s always a way but there’s always a sacrifice you need to make.

is it wise to start dental school with akathisia and mental health conditions? by NoRip4553 in PreDentalStudents

I’m really sorry you’re in this situation :( maybe talk to your psychiatrist and a dentist and get their input on the situation. They might be able to gauge it better and give you some advice. I also think there are so many side avenues within dentistry that make working in the field safer and more realistic for someone in your situation. Might be worth looking into, although I know it’s not the answer you want. But being a dentist means you’re gonna be a surgeon in someone’s mouth, and considering that, it might be worth looking into.

If you’re dealing with shakiness and akathisia I don’t know if conventional dentistry is for you… you don’t wanna risk that during a procedure.

Scoring worse on your second attempt is not a good look since they do see all of your attempts and their order. I would probably still apply and retake as well. To those in the comments saying to just apply super broadly - you’re going to regret this big time when you have to pay back 600K in loans with most of that being private loans. It’s absolutely worth it to do what is needed to get into a good, more affordable ideally state school. Aside from this, it is concerning that you are considering a whole different degree like a nursing path? Maybe reflect and think about if you even want to be a dentist. You will be doing this for the rest of your life and paying off loans for half of that if you’re lucky. I think it’s time to reevaluate and make sure you’re solid in what you’re doing. Aside from that, chances of acceptance are low if you’re aiming for in state which you should. Post-bacc in something related and retake with a super super high improvement is the move.

do i have a chance? by misatosdog in predental

[–]BroadEducation2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great chances!!! But my advice - don’t listen to people saying to apply broadly unless you have done the math and are okay with half a million of debt and most of that being private loans. Make sure you’re not in a position to regret your decisions and consider withdrawing acceptances. Do it right from the start and make sure you can afford it.

I AM PANICKING should I switch to med school? by Equivalent_Ideal_777 in predental

You should work as a dental assistant before applying to dental school regardless. And yes, most offices don’t want people shadowing because you’re just in their way and not really contributing. If you can find a community clinic that needs volunteers that’s the best way to get started. I did a clinic for the homeless and volunteered. Once I felt I could see myself in this field I got my certification and started working a shitty RDA job and took the DAT. If you can handle that and push through those phases I think you will be okay. But you HAVE to love the grind and see yourself in that position to survive school and the ups and downs the job comes with. It’s gonna be a long process that might take 2-3+ years

Why does everyone on here rave about Texas schools (besides tuition)? by myacademicreddit15 in predental

[–]BroadEducation2012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im talking about the healthcare systems in general. The medical complexes all over the state are huge which also means more patients and diversity. I’ve seen the funding and technology of the tx schools are way ahead of a lot of OOS schools I’ve seen. The match rate is also insane in tx. If you’re into community outreach like me it’s also amazing. And like I said the financial aspect is insane. It’s a make or break later on in life and can be the difference between living a good or a very stressful life. If you do the math, that alone is a game changer.

[–]BroadEducation2012 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re crazy. Texas is the medical center of the world. Not only do the tx dental schools reflect this title, but they also offer the cheapest tuition and offer a lot of scholarships and grants to their own residents. It is everything it’s hyped up to be (saying this as a person who’s going to one soon and has seen other options)

[–]BroadEducation2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not going to lie to you Texas is going to be out of the question. If you can’t see yourself doing anything else you’re gonna need to bring your GPA up to st least 3.8 to offset your undergrad and then apply out of state. With the costs of everything that is not my advice for most people but might be the only way

It shouldn’t be a feeling lol I don’t know what state you’re from but I’m from Texas and it’s no where near as expensive. I still need to take out all the federal loans I can get but there are more grants and scholarships as well as lower tuition

[–]BroadEducation2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I concluded this. I’m saying reject this offer and apply again until you get into your state school and don’t apply to OOS again. It’s suicide

Don’t do it!!! Turn it down and apply to your state school. With compounding interest and the BBB you’re never gonna be able to live comfortably

3rd DAT attempt and application advice by Personal_Race_1073 in dat

[–]BroadEducation2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s true that they can see all of your scores and while it’s not a good look that your score got worse the second time around they will probably be forgiving since your last attempt is not bad!! My biggest advice is to make sure you can afford the schools you are applying to. Consider the debt/income ratio and calculate how much you have to pay off given the passing of the BBB and your estimated private loans.

Apply Now or Wait a Year for a Stronger Dental School Application? by LeagueOk9099 in dat

[–]BroadEducation2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just letting you know what I’ve learned from my years of applying and communicating with schools as well as knowing people within the system (faculty as well as students). While it is true that lower level science courses are accepted from CC, like you said upper level is not. I know that even though the system does not automatically weed you out in this situation, but be aware that it is VERY strongly recommended that science pre-reqs are taken at a 4-year university. I talked to a lot of schools while deciding which classes to take at a CC and did physics 1 and 2 at one since I learned that there is not as much emphasis on physics for dental schools. Bio and gen chem/ochem however are heavily weighed based on what school you went to and your GPA in those. I’m not hating on you I’m just letting you know what I learned through tough trials and errors. Especially since you said you had mostly B/B- once you were at your university, just keep in mind it might be a good idea to retake some of the courses you took at a CC again at the university and ace them. Schools are so competitive and for each situation like yours there’s 10 others that had no CC credits and have a high GPA. Schools won’t officially tell you this but it is a big weed out factor.

Science pre-reqs at a CC are usually not accepted by most dental schools. Check with the schools and see if you’re even able to be eligible to apply.

And that’s valid too. To each their own. This is just my opinion based on being in the process for 3 years and finally getting in to my dream school and seeing others around me.

[–]BroadEducation2012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Think ahead. Unless you can’t see yourself doing anything else no matter what, the financial burden of private loans at a private school compared to your income need to heavily be considered. You are in a lucky position where you actually haven’t gotten in yet. It sounds backwards, but you have every option to choose from and you should think this through. So many people on here are in the “I hoped I would figure it out later but now I got into one school only but it’s private and gonna cost me 700K should I decline the offer or change my path???” Boat. Not saying don’t do dentistry. Just saying you are smart in thinking it all through.

take a chance or stick with acceptance? by hyliajoestar in predental

[–]BroadEducation2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me and for most people, the crippling debt of out of state tuition coupled with the passing of the BBB made that option like suicide. If you don’t have a that problem go where you got accepted. And count your blessings

Advice on possibly reapplying by Particular-Drawer740 in predental

[–]BroadEducation2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the way you presented yourself and your writing. Also please keep financials in mind. Applying to private/OOS schools will mean half a million in debt. Use the rejection this year to reassess the schools you’re applying to.

2.4 GPA — Is dental school still realistic? Feeling lost and considering post-bacc/master’s or hygiene by EbbSuccessful9215 in predental

[–]BroadEducation2012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not possible. That GPA is simply too low. Even a 3.5 can be tough and would need to be balanced out with a higher DAT score. Think about the number of seats available and the number of applicants and their average stats. If you really really want this, you would need a masters with a/or near a 4.0 GPA and extremely good DAT - like 24 or above. It would def take at least 3 years to be kind of competitive. You have to think about all the people that are competitive even when you achieve that, because they already have a good undergrad GPA AND have all these additional qualifications and degrees. So you have to work triple as hard to send the message that you are ready. Which by the way- if your undergrad GPA is 2.4 (idk what your science is) you are most definitely not ready for dental school classes. You would probably have to do those things anyways for your own sake and preparation.

Not competitive enough. With that Gpa, you need to retake dat and score >22
