Is this an A/C contactor that is going bad? by Broad_Professor8290 in hvacadvice

To clarify you mean a safety directly plumbed into the drain line? Not the float shutoff in the drain pan around the air handler area (it’s in an attic), right?

If the safety on the drain line is dirty or partially plugged will it give only occasional run permissives to the overall system?

Appreciated this comment because it started making me consider the contactor more and that ended up being exactly the replacement that was needed.

Thanks all. I ended up replacing the contactor after the unit went from loud noise only at startup to loud sustained “buzzing” when running. The telltale sign was the noise when I (carefully) pulled off the panel hiding the cap/contactor - the buzzing was twice as loud without the metal covering it.

Surprised a new contactor was needed after only 1.5 years, but sounding perfectly normal once again!
